I’m not sure why, but the last person I expected to wear a twin set to this shindig, or any shindig, is Kathryn Bigelow.
Kathryn’s shoes are offensive.
I do think that there are some who can wear whatever they want: K. Bigelow; Meryl Streep; Helen Mirren; and Beyonce.
THAT IS IT. So the shoes get a pass.
Why does she get a pass? Why has she suddenly been put on the same list as Mirren? I don’t get it.
All three made disappointing choices in shoes. And – is there something wonky going on with K Bigelow’s bra?
Helen’s dress just deserves better shoes. I don’t understand choosing neutral shoes here. Or possibly ever. She is really knocking it out the park this season with the exception of the last number at the DGAs. Was it the DGAs? All awards shows are running together now.
Totally agree. Such a beautiful dress (and she looks beautiful in it), but the shoes were a mistake.
Kathryn Bigelow could be Liz Hurley’s sister
I never thought that before but now that you say it, I can totally see it!
I was just going to make the same comment! It’s quite uncanny.
Also, Helen Hunt looks fantastic, so the shoes the get a pass in my book.
Kathryn Bigelow looks like a librarian from the 50s. Strange choice, and those shoes are a size too big. Why? They don’t look like and exclusive shoe from a hoity-toity collection, they look totally mall purchased.
I think you should know that often I look at nude shoes these days and think “heather would never approve.”
Nude shoes are fine… if your outfit has a lot going on. But a simple outfit (beige twin set, simple grey dress) is always improved by groovy footwear.
Nude shooz on the red carpet, including the lunch red carpet, are always a disappointment, even though I think they are indispensable in non-red carpet world. With the exception of Helen Hunt, these ladies are not representing well for those of us of a certain age. C’mon, K & S, pizazz us!
you are waging war against the tan shoe, but it is a righteous war!
Seriously, K Biggs is both hotter AND cooler than that.
…She would also probably beat me up for calling her “K Biggs.”
Is Sally’s dress supposed to be ruched or is it just wrinkling all down her mid-section? Not good, either way.
i’m not as anti-nude as many of you, but nude/tan shoes do not go with a gray dress. no.
Is it me, or are all these women dressed like they’re going to different events? Kathryn’s dressed to go to work at a fairly stodgy office, Sally’s dressed for a summer afternoon wedding, and Helen’s dressed for a night on the town.
Helen Hunt looks perfectly chic and lovely. That dress makes up for the droopy black one at the other thing. The shoes aren’t a good match but who cares when shehas that hair and face?
Yep, HH looks as good as she gets, which is very, very good.
KBig needs to understand her role as a Badass Older Lady (No Way! You’re How Old?) is to do the opposite of falling into the trap of pencil skirts with twin sets in neutral colors. That’s what all us aging gals think we have to start doing, but when we shop and get dressed, we need to be less safe and more inspired with some youthful badassery that is cool and sexy without screaming Desperate Wrinkly Person Fail. This is where the KBigs (and HelMirs) of the world become our role models.
What Gigi said. A little bit of badassery every day keeps us aging gals healthy, wealthy and wise-ass. Do not go gently but do go with class and grace.
Which is how KBigs looks here, like a gently aged Kate Middleton.
It’s so hard, though. I’m already in my thirties and already confused about what is “too young” and what is “too old” when it’s time to shop. Good thing I hardly go shopping!
I love that- “gently aged KM” – and KB looks lovely and correct.
When is it correct to ever wear THAT? Maybe in court when you’ve been charged with murder, but otherwise, NO.
“We got Annie” wasn’t my first thought when I saw Sally, but I absolutely see it – with the questionable stereotypes throwing her around the garden and all. Sally Field can sell that kind of thing to me at full price.
These women all look incredible, but I take all of Heather’s points about what they’re wearing, especially about the shoes. Nude shoes are so boring! If I had money and a stylist I would INSIST on colourful shoes. I mean, I don’t despise them, but they really “blah” up the place.
I thought Kathryn Bigelow was Kelly Bensimon. Which is to say KBig (61) looks fab and KBen (44) should have stayed out of the sun.
From the neck up, all these ladies look freaking tremendous without seeming as if they have been pulled, tucked, plumped or whatever into submission.
I second this.
Helen Hunt looks wonderful in her beautiful grey dress-but you’re right about those chunky/clunky shoes with this elegant dress.
Agree with everyone that H H’s dress is gorgeous, but look at the hemline! Pointy, as though she suddenly realized it was too long and had someone baste it 5 mins before she hopped into her limo…
Seriously, when is a twin set EVER okay?
My accountancy professor wore them all the time, so I guess if you’re an academic and/or an accountant?
Ditto, Eli! These women look fantastic, and I am particularly bowled over by HH. Who cares about a minor misstep in choosing a shoe, she gets the Ultimate Well-Played in my book by making the choice not to f**k up her face! And, how wonderful that Sally Field still looks like Sally Field! Brava, Ladies!
Sally Field, at 65, can thank her talented plastic surgeon for the fact that she still looks like Sally Field.
Isn’t grey a neutral? Or is that part of the joke I’m not getting?
Helen Hunt definitely missed an awesome shoe opportunity there….but damn, she looks great. Perhaps she figured she looked so good, no one would be looking at her feet so she wore the most comfortable pair she owns.
You mean: shoeportunity? lol
Never noticed until now what a great set Bigelow’s got. That’s what twin sets are for – showing off the twins!
Field is fine. Hunt, stunning.
Hate all their shoes.
A twinset? Really? She looks like a librarian with bad hair. I know this event isn’t equivalent to the Oscars, but it’s not a teacher’s in-service meeting either.
She looks like a movie librarian with bad hair. As a real-life librarian who struggles mightily with hair that is wispy-fine and thin, I can assure you that none of us would wear that get-up to that type of event. Nor to work, really. It looks uncomfortable and restrictive.
Yeah, gray is most definitely a neutral, so I’m really confused about that comment. There’s not really even room for debate on that. As for the twinset, it isn’t just too boring, it also seems not quite dressy enough for the event. Also, it makes her boobs look weird.
Kathryn – A beige twinset?? You’re a woman who makes bad @ss movies, leave the twinsets to the DAR.
Sally – Oh petite Sally. You look so lovely but don’t wear dresses below the knee, they cut you off. Also rethink the black shoes, the dress is so flowy, they just look cloddish and lazy.
Helen – You are rockin’ that dress! You just need some strappy, sparkly heels to spruce it up and show off those gams.
I saw KB on Stephen Colbert the other night and she was wearing something very similar. Did she used to work at a law firm or something? You know, before she became a Oscar-winning director.
Oh, these shoes!!! These BEIGE SHOES!!! When will they ever go away??? Helen Hunt looks great in that gorgeous dress and then you look down and those BEIGE EFFING CLODHOPPERS kick you right in the face with their uglicity.
Re: twin set . . . well, it Was a luncheon.
