Mostly Well Played, Kate Middleton

well-played

Kate’s switched from a side-part to a middle-part and she totally doesn’t know what to do with her hair like that. Please discuss. Plus: coat porn.

COAT. Coat. Coat. Coat. Coat. Coat. etc… Seriously, I was just on the Daily Mail for a little gossipy news-adjacent light reading and saw an article about her in this here beautiful coat, and all people could comment on is how tired she looked. COME ON PEOPLE. She’s a new mom and she’s probably tired, yes, but COAT! Get your priorities straight, for heaven’s sake.

    • Gine
      +51

Yeah, I saw those comments, too. It’s like, really? A woman with a four-month-old looks tired? YOU DON’T SAY.

      •  Lise
        +2

Seriously, little George is right on schedule for a growth spurt, and possibly teething as well. She looks AMAZING for the mother of a four-month-old.

  2. Gine
    +48

Yeah, looks like the hair was an experiment she immediately regretted. Been there.

  3. D
    +16

She needs a trim. Her hair always used to have some bounce to it, but lately it just kind of hangs there.

    Love the coat, though.

Oh, man. Post-partum hair is a bummer. During pregnancy it’s all bouncy, thick n shiny, you have the wee bairn and all your hair starts falling out and gets dry and frizzy. Thanks, hormones.

      •  Billie
        +22

Yes, post-partum hair is THE WORST. And it’s so, so hard to come to terms with the fact that the beautiful bouncy hair won’t make a come back any time soon, and a chop of a few inches is the only thing in order. Give her another month to accept it.

And for me, my scalp started flaking like crazy. And that is just so, so attractive.

I will always cut her slack… for being a brunette, for being so graceful and for being a new mom and having to put with people constantly wanting Prince William to get rid of her and marry them.

That said… I am not a fan of that hairstyle, period. That part in the middle, flat on top, Farrah-wings at the bottom. I especially hate it when it’s all completely fake and completely trashifizing an otherwise pretty woman. Now, Kate.. by virtue of being Kate.. will never be trashified but I am not a fan of the hair.

EEEEEEOOOOOOOOOEEEEEEEEEOOOOEEEOOWWWWWWWW who the heck wants to marry Prince Middleton? That is one nasty looking dude.

    •  legally blonde
      +6

Exactly. She still looks fabulous and better than 99% of what’s posted on this site, but it’s not really doing her any favors (or favours). It is very Farrah-like and overwhelming on her.

This is blasphemy for many, I know, but I am tired of her hair.

    Love the coat.

      +4

I agree, she could do some really small styling changes that wouldn’t be bonkers or even permanent but would mix it up a bit. Like, there are so many hair options out there! She would look great in a lot of them!

    • Nancy
      +1

Yes, it looks spaniel-like from afar.she needs a trim of about 6 inches.

  6. Sandra
    +10

Well, we ALL need to be able to get a good look at men uniform, right?

The hair hanging in her face does her no justice. If she’s keeping the part, she needs to put the sides up. Or the whole business. She could get several inches chopped off, but I can’t see her cutting it short. I’m not surprised the hair looks less bouncy. Her physiology has changed from pregnancy–which seems to give some women great hair benefits–to (reportedly) nursing mother. Feeding baby and maintaining self take huge precedence over gorgeous hair in the list of the biological priorities of metabolism. Plus, the little one is reportedly not the greatest sleeper.

    Coat is fab, of course.

She’s probably tired of her hair, too! Right around 4 months post partum is when mine starting falling out in HUGE clumps and I cried everytime I took a shower…

    • HelenBackAgain
      +8

      Aw, poor baby!

And that’s the first thing I thought of. I’m betting that part got moved because of a newly thin spot.

Someone needs to tell her that if she chops off about half the length, it’ll fluff up on the scalp and she can get away with a lot more in the way of where to part it.

  8. martinipie
    +32

Center parts are just hard to pull off for most people, I think; it’s not what most heads of hair want to do naturally at all. Embrace even a slightly side part, ladies of the world! You will look great!

    • Annie S.
      +9

THIS. I think center parts require thick, healthy-looking hair and the right hair-to-forehead ratio to look good (see: J.Lo and Jessica Biel). She is so lovely, and her coat is so lovely, and her baby/husband/life are so lovely, but that hair is depressing.

      • Ailatan
        +6

THIS! A small forehead and you look awful (me) or a rather long forehead and it’s like a big expanse of skin. Kate has cherubic features and is very pretty but the middle part is not for her.

  9. Stefanie
    +1

Yeah, I try the side part every once in a while but it’s always a mess. Love that coat.

    • Stefanie
      +1

And I think she needs her roots touched up. (No biggie tho! Im just surprised to see her hair color looking less than lovely.)

  10. Cat
    +10

Yeah, not a fan of the hair. It’s too long and sadly, those post-partum hormones are making it seem very flat and dull. She needs to trim it up a bit (yes, I know she’s busy) or maybe not wear it down all the time.

In the meantime– coat! I love her coats. I want to raid her coat closet.

  11. Lynne
    +11

I just remembered I’ve been wanting the perfect red coat since I was about 6 years old. I feel compelled to go hunting for it right now.

  12. Sonya
    +5

I saw these photos on The Daily Mail this morning and kept wondering what about her looked different. I am not a fan of it. It is kind of harsh on her. I think a center part would be great if she had a bob, but at this length it is too dated.

  13. Ailatan
    +30

Remember in Seinfeld when they switched the shower heads? Well, that’s how her hair looks now.

    • Liane
      +3

That’s exactly what I was going to say. Perhaps the palaces have decided to go eco-friendly?

    • Fifie
      +1

It must be because she’s just moved to Kensington Palace – the shower heads must be different!!

    • Tina
      +3

As someone who lives not too far from Kensington Palace (although very far in terms of income levels) I can confirm that the water is incredibly hard. Much harder than in rural Wales. I’m sure that Richard Ward imports lovely soft water from wherever one imports such water, but she doesn’t go there every day.

there’s a picture of me in my highschool yearbook with almost that same exact hairdo.

that red coat though is beautiful.

    • Aparatchick
      +3

Yep. Me, too, along with almost every girl in my high school class – long hair, parted in the middle. A look at my yearbook would have you swearing we were all wearing the same wig……

  15. kickassmomnyc
    +6

The coat’s nice, but nothing to get all porny over. Just nice.

    • Esme
      +6

I don’t even think it’s that nice–my god, it’s a boring, run-of-the-mill coat and, at least in these photos, it’s more wine-colored than red.

  16. TaraMisu
    +2

Ooooooooo I love that coat! The hair, not so much. But I’ll give her a pass, postpartum hair is a bitch.

  17. AJ
    +28

Alas, the woman is human. Anyone who thinks they’re just handing off little Georgie to a nanny can look at Kate here and see evidence otherwise. That woman is definitely doing some mothering. Anyway, I love her and love the coat. Go Cambridges!

  18. meggiemoo
    +19

I can just picture her getting ready for this event, trying to make her hair behave, and right before she has to walk out the door (because babies have impeccable timing), littte George wanting to be fed. And then she fed him, took one last look in the mirror and was all like, “Fook it.”

  19. anabels
    +3

Love the coat! Know exactly how she feels about the hair, I keep trying to leave mine loose coz everyone says it looks pretty but it drives me nuts and ends up behind my ears! Or I find a tie and ponytail it! Beat she slopes round the house with it up!

  20. googler
    +13

Just picture how this would have looked with a simple bun. That pretty face of hers would have been the star, and she’d look so chic in that coat. Alas the hair gives the impression of frumpiness.

I got the feeling that William sprang this whole ‘let’s get up and be one with the people’ thing on her, and she didn’t have time to do her hair properly because she was taking care of the baby. Probably had a blow-dry a few days ago, and just didn’t have time to get out the flat-iron.

she is not aging well. must be hard to be princess .

    • Stefanie
      +24

Seriously? She has a 4 month old baby. A 4 month old baby will “age” anyone. It’s hard to be parent.

      • why
        +2

babies don’t give you lines and wrinkles . I have seen lots of mom with babies none of them got that from having a baby , it’s just weird for me .

    • GoodyGoodyGumdrops
      +2

She has been a smoker and might still be, she is verging on being underweight and therefore has no fat to fill out her face, she has been a tanner in the past like her sister, and I’m sorry to sound nasty, but she comes from an island with a limited gene pool where people are not known for aging nicely. Just look at her husband. Oh man.

      • HelenBackAgain
        +8

Dude, where are your priorities? Check out this FABULOUS BELTED COAT! And such a wonderful color! Like cranberry meets pomegranate.

I would wear that all the time, with everything. In fact I think I’m going to start looking for a knock-off right now.

      • Heather
        +38

You need to chill out, please. I don’t know what your beef is with Prince William, but cool it — we’re not ragging on people’s genes on this web site, period.

        • Heather

Er, Helen, that was not directed at you. Bad timing. Your comment wasn’t there when I posted.

‘Sokay, the nested format allows me to see that, but thanks for saying. I really like the current comments app BTW!

      • Kirst

An island with a limited gene pool? get lost!

        • GoodyGoodyGumdrops
          +4

Why? If you look at the reality of the situation, there are a lot of medical issues in the UK as well as in other areas of the world that are a bit far-flung such as Scandinavia that have health problems related to a limited influx of new people. Baldness, dental issues, and bone diseases are all problems that arise from having a small gene pool. Don’t read any British papers, because they will point this stuff out about the royals all day and all night.

I don’t have a beef with Prince William. He seems like a nice enough guy, and very well mannered, but let’s face it- neither him or his wife really do anything for a living. How stressful is sitting around and doing one appearance every six to eight weeks in fancy dress? For folks who have never held down more than a part-time job for a few months (her) or years (him) at a time, they do look awfully old already. It’s true.

          • Anne
            +21

None of which is important to anyone on this particular website: we’re here for the fun jokes and the clothes, not to read treatises about people’s genetic material.

            • S
              +10

Exactly. Though, FWIW, the English do not have any major genetic diseases which cluster in that ethnic group. I’m a cancer physician, so I can say that with some authority. :)

      • Fifie
        +16

I think Prince William is very handsome.

I hate center parts WITH A PASSION. I can’t think of one person that can pull it off.

    • Lindsay
      +4

      Gwyneth, but only her.

      • Bianca
        +6

Personally, I hate it on her too. It makes weird, unflattering things to people’s faces. Even people with fantastic faces and covetable coats!

        • Bianca
          +3

Cherie :D I hope you didn’t take offense, I was exaggerating in order to make a point. I just meant that very few people actually look good with such a severe hairstyle. My personal taste, of course.

    •  Cherie
      +9

I part my hair in the centre and I’m awesome.

      • HelenBackAgain
        +1

        I’ll bet you are, Cherie!

It looked good on me when I had more hair, too. But I’ve got little cowlicks at each temple that kept it off my face naturally, so that makes a difference.

      • Bianca
        +1

Ooops, Cherie, I meant to reply to you but I replied to myself instead. That’s what I get for being on my mobile instead of sleeping.

    • Sue
      0

I’m with you, Biana–I hate, Hate, HATE the center part! Gads, it ages her at least 10 years. Pull it back, put it up, something, ANYTHING–but for god’s sake don’t let it hang in limp hanks! And no, Gwyneth doesn’t look good in a center part, either.

  24. Annie
    +5

I so wish she would seek some professional advice on her makeup and hair. She’s a beautiful woman, obviously happy and healthy, but she’s aging herself.

  25. Lindsay
    +1

Ugh, I tried to change my hair part back in grade 11 because it said in a magazine that middle parts were in, with Audrina from The Hills being used as an example. Big mistake. But sadly I didn’t realize this until after my yearbook photo was taken.

    I like her jacket, though.

  26. Mina
    +4

Couldn’t she have just jauntily thrown a beret on her head? or like a cute little crocheted floppy beanie?

  27.  Bob Stanley
    +2

I know a twelve-year old girl that would kill for that hair.

  28. NicoleMN6
    +7

She has nice hair, but ENOUGH already. Can she pull it back into a ponytail, or a bun, or just a half-up half-down do once in a while? She’s a mom now! It’s like the royals are scared to death they’ll get into a Samson/Felicity Season 2 tailspin unless her hair is long and flowing at all times.

  29. ChristieLea
    +3

Yes, even Her Highness’ face suggests an air of “yeaaaahhhh, so we won’t be trying the centre-part again.”

  30. Donna
    +1

She is beautiful and the coat is fantastic… but the center part is not doing her any favors. I’m with the people who suggest cutting the length.

  31. Candi
    +1

Either she made a huge mistake with the middle part OR its part of her carefully crafted campaign to look “like one of us”. Either way, amen she finally did something wrong. I was starting to think she was the second coming of the cosmetic mesiah.

  32. Veritas
    0

The Mail showed her playing with her hair. The hair is a mistake, playing with it, even if only momentarily, compounds it, particularly at a Remembrance Day (or whatever they call it over there). But cut her some slack–she’s about as close to perfect as you can get.

  33.  hnodc
    +1

Seriously, she needs to lose 6-8″ of that hair and add some long layers, but NO bangs. All that hair must take an hour to dry and even a princess does not have time for that. Not to mention a new mom! Cut it Kate!

  34. Akit

    Is she in Haim now?
