Met Ball Well Playeds and Hmms and Zzzs: More Celebs Who Look Perfectly Fine, Mostly, But Also Seriously Could Be Absolutely Anywhere Else

So, there is acreage between “catering to your dramatic whims” and “looking like a crazypants naked and/or upholstered crackpot,” and the whole point of the Met Ball is the former, even if you fall on your face doing it (which leads to the latter, and outfits like that are exactly why Anna’s annual gala is such a hilarious good time and must never, ever change, even when we get capsy over people’s insane choices). Don’t we think it’s about time, say, Renee Zellweger had some semblance of a dramatic whim again? She is operating at a severe dramatic whimsy deficit. Her last one was Kenny Chesney, I think, and although that didn’t turn out so well for her, it was a VERY exciting time for all of us looky-loos. ALWAYS THINK OF THE LOOKY-LOOS. If we’re stuck with a stupid term like that to describe what we’re doing, then at least please make sure we’re having fun doing it.

This whole lot is about as punk as an Esther Williams number.

Now *that* would be a theme. Next year?

Please tell me ya’all are gonna cover Paloma Faith. She was flawless.

Rene actually looks pretty good in the face department. She gets so squinty and sour looking so often.

She looks good, but she doesn’t look like herself anymore either.

I thought she was Connie Britton because her eyes were open!

I didn’t recognize her at all at first and thought the photo had been titled incorrectly. She looks so different.

And I thought she was JK Rowling. And I was so happy at how beautifully she was aging. Then I was sad that she hadn’t tried anything punk, since didn’t it come from Britain originally? This is the 3rd time I’ve seen this pic, and only just now have I learned it’s Zellweger.

Has she had her eyes done? They look more open.

Can I assume the unfinished edges (do my eyes deceive me?) is her contribution to Punk? As dresses go, even in brown it’s a nice design.

I thought it was Julie Benz.

Do you think that Wintour is peev’d that so many people shrugged off the theme? And so obviously?

    • Sara
      0

Did you see what Wintour was wearing though? It was a floral white dress but had some pink (the color of punk, according to AW), so it was appropriate. Right…

I think most everyone looks fine here. Claire Danes and Michelle Dockery look lovely, if not exactly “punk,” but they at least incorporated some punk elements into their looks. It’s not as if they shrugged off the theme, just that they didn’t EMBRACE it like Madonna or SJP.

      • Tiffany
        +4

Yes, Wintour didnt follow the theme…but I could imagine her thinking that she (and her daughter) could be the exceptions to the rule.

She’d have a right to be, if she herself hadn’t shrugged it off.

I, however, am peeved — not that I have any right to be. Seriously, people, why wouldn’t you want to dress to this theme?

        +5

I would love an excuse to get all costumey and thematic, especially with this theme, but also just in general. The Met Ball is wasted on the wrong people.

    • Candice

Probably not, considering she wore THIS

I mentioned it earlier when people were discussing how so much last night was Game of Thrones, but Katie Holmes out did herself.

Because she is essentially wearing the white version of the slave girl dress that Shae wears most of the time now, and that Ros wore frequently in Season 2.

I like Renee’s dress, actually, and she looks fab. She looks like JK Rowling, but still fab.

And I think Katie Holmes looks really good, if off-theme, too.

  7. Candice

I think it’s kind of a bummer that most of the people who attended the Met Gala totally phoned in the theme. A few people actually went for it, but everyone else either half assed it or totally ignored it. Some of the past few Met Gala themes have been kinda lame (Model as a Muse?) but this one sounded totally fun and awesome and people could have really gone all out. 2008 had a fun theme too; Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy.

At least they all look pretty. I’m okay with that. Danes and Holmes, smashing even.

And Zellweger’s dress, which I think is a fabulous color for her, does have a very subtle and IMO attractive nod to the occasion – none of its hems is stitched, they’re all ripped.

  9. Rose

Florence at least seems to have a vague idea of the theme. I’m actually okay with her not going over-the-top – she’s pulling off this look rather well, odd as it is, and seems to be having fun with it.

Agreed re: Dockery wasting so much potential. She could’ve taken some HUGE risks but all she did was wear a shorter dress than usual. Grr…

When did Renee Zellwiger turn into my mother-in-law?

  11. CC

I am not fond of the dress at all, but Renee Z looks wonderful. Her hair doesn’t look limp and sweaty. Her face looks happy, not squinty. Good for her.

Re: Michelle Williams’ bag. Crass is actually a punk band from the ’70s. That is a poster for a show where there was a screening for “Autopsy.” She wasn’t cheating, she was actually successfully using a subtle yet legit punk reference in her accessories.

    • thunderthighs

Word, I was pretty excited to see that!

    • Esme
      +8

She’s still cheating because grabbing a punk bag is not exactly embracing the theme; doesn’t matter whether Crass is a real band or not.

      • holly
        +2

I have always found CRASS to be unlistenable and overbearing in their political ideology, but c’mon! Printing an anarchist band’s name on a $$$$$ purse?!

    • Beth C.
      +3

I still think it’s kind of cheating. If she had that as an iron-on pinned to the back of a denim vest and thrown the vest on over her gown, then I’d give her full credit.

She does get half points for not going too mainstream with the reference, though.

At least Michelle’s bag (which I love!) gives an indication that she new what event she was attending – even if she didn’t go full out punk. Renee looks like she just popped in (to the MET ball) on her way home from another event.

Renee looks great but boring dress. Katie needs a belt. Michelle looks awesome. I think the hair is a bit punk.

I love, Love, LOVE what Michelle Williams, Claire Danes, Katie Holmes & Michelle Dockery are wearing! It may not be “Punk”, but it is GORGEOUS! FAB to all of them!

I liked someone above who said Renee Z looked like J.K. Rowling… and while I think J.K. is lovely, Renee has never looked like her before. There’s a lot of work going on in her face and that is so very depressing.

I agree also with the fact that many of these dresses are lovely but lovely is out of place at this event, unless it’s punk lovely… is there such a thing?

  16. Brooke
    +1

Renee looks great. I know you guys disapprove when we comment on bodies, but she looks like she put on a little body fat, and that is a very good thing. She went through a very lean-looking period there for a bit, and it aged her considerably IMHO. Here, she looks healthy, happy, and her eyes are open. As for the dress, some people honestly simply cannot pull off punk, and she is one of them (see also Burch, Tory and Mayer, Melissa). She sort of tried (rough hems … ooo edgy), which is more than I can say for those in pink, flowers, and bridal-adjacent numbers.

      Her “open” eyes–courtesy of blepharoplasty.

      • Helen

Maybe. I think just cutting down on the Botox might’ve done the trick, too – it can make the area around eyes heavy and puffy like that when it’s overdone.

Either way, she looks good. And I surprisingly like the bangs on her.

Zellweger looks like she’s wearing something intended for a mother-of-the-bride, which has got to be the opposite of punk.

I hope you’ll cover Hailee Steinfeld – I saw her elsewhere and she had a cute long leather dress which had flower embellishments made out of safety pins.

Wait, hold the phone… Renee Z is wearing a strapless Caroline Herrera? Well, I never would have imagined such a thing!

Michelle Williams looks gorgeous, classy. Love her new hairstyle with the headband.

Claire Danes, on the other hand, seems like she needs a new hair color and style. And a better dress.

Clare Dane’s hair looked really fried. Not the most flattering makeup for her pretty face either. (less is more)

True, Danes’ styling could have been improved considerably. Really love the dress on her, though.

So, I have a few general thoughts on this whole shebang. First off, how is it that no one I’ve seen was wearing Vivienne Westwood???? I mean, seriously, you’d thing everyone with a ticket would have called her up and said “So, hey, Viv, you got anything from the 70s in the back of your closet I could borrow?”

Also, is it just me or does it seem like a lot of people were trying for ‘subtly punk’ but ended up landing closer to ‘vaguely disco’ or ‘safely goth’?

    • Eandh

christina ricci wore westwood, but not vintage westwood. otoh, westwood herself, zandra rhodes and debbie harry all went to the gala in fabulous oufits.

At first I thought Renee Zellwegger was J.K. Rowling. Both beautiful women, but both would most likely care for a different doppelganger.

I’m willing to give Renee Zellweger a complete pass because she didn’t seem drunk or high or otherwise out of her skull. This is significant progress.

Florence Welch’s fringe is EPIC FRINGE. So I give her a meh, thanks for playing.

Zellwegger’s dress looks like it’s either not complete or something was ripped off last minute from the neck and hemlines.
