Met Ball Fug or Fine Carpet: The Fannings

First, I realize Jaime King — here featured — is not a Fanning, but since I just realized she and Elle Fanning look a LOT like each other, I’ve decided to make her an honorary one. Like maybe she’s the “distant cousin” who is secretly Elle’s mother due to an EastEnders-style scandal in her childhood. Anyway, on the heels of Elle’s Fug Madness run and Dakota’s surprising ability to continue being under our radar despite not being above reproach EITHER, let’s take a look at these three Fannings, real and otherwise.

Man the Fanning girls struck out. My eyes are offended by Elle’s makeup. It looks like it was applied by a child using her Barbie Makeup Kit.

  2. Kris

The illusion netting is making it look like she’s got saggy skin hanging off her ribs. Euccch.

Are the Fannings on the path to Olsen twin type absurd choices in clothing?

  4. Helen

Dakota’s dress might work, maybe, had it fit. I’m so distracted by how huge it is on her, I really cannot tell!

Bless Elle for trying. And now she’ll know, full-on ’60s would look good on her.

King looks, well, fine. Except I think the headband is stupid. And yes she and the Fanning girls do share a resemblance.

While a wee percentage of the people who attended the Met Gala grasped the theme, and an even smaller number who embraced it, a question remains: Why is ugly and unflattering eye makeup considered punk?

  6. Maria L.

Bless her heart. Elle looks like a little Vulcan teen with that eye makeup.

I don’t think tie dye is punk. And I believe if you google Siouxsie Sioux you’ll get the eye makeup. It just was that way on a chosen few. This is not a good representation but I guess if you tie dye your dress, you’re eyes aren’t far behind.

Lol, the line about making it into a Sparks movie is hilarious!!

I cannot sign off on Dakota’s entire head. Her FACE looks fine, but her hair! It’s called a brush, dear, and I will not hurt you. At all. I do not accept fully unbrushed hair as a punk choice in this case because her hair looks like that nearly all the time. It’s as if she enjoyed the unbrushed look in too many of her early movies and it’s her default now. She can look groomed, but this is no good. No good at all.

YES! I want to wrap them in towels like I do my naughty cat and brush away those nasty knots!

The Fannings had my favourite looks of the night. There, I said it. And yes, I am crazy, but that is beside the point.

I didn’t think much of Dakota’s dress when I thought those were supposed to be skeleton hands coming around front. Now that I know it’s stupid, tired angel wings? Ugh, please. And could one of her girlfriends please explain blotting paper to Elle? She looks sweaty all the time in her photos. Her girlfriends are just being mean keeping that a secret from her.

    •  Kat

I thought that too, but I’m thinking her make up artist just uses too much highlighter on her. It’s bypassing the “dewy” look and going straight to sweaty.

Oh, GFY Heather, of course you made Jaime King an honorary Fanning… HA! I love Dakota’s whole look! Her eye makeup and jewelry are AWESOME! And the dress is beautiful, but it needed to be 2 sizes smaller! ½ FAB! Elle just looks crazy… FUG! And I like Jaime King’s outfit! Her accessories are great! She looks FINE!

OMG, Lemon Breeland is having a baby!!! Will they write it up into Hart of Dixie or will she go away to live with her long lost mother for 5 months? Oh, the suspense is killing me!

Dakota always just feels so sort of sad and drab to me. Same limp hair and almost waxy face. I don’t know, she seems a nice girl, but I think she needs a drastic style overhaul.

  14. mepe

I think Jaime King looks effing awesome here – I love the sleek suit with the subtle crown and shiny pumps – and her being pregnant matters why?! . Also, I think it sucks that you lumped her in with a couple of 15 year olds.

I actually think I like Dakota’s dress, wings and all. I’ll also take this moment to be obnoxious and mention that I suddenly realized she was next to me in exercise class the other day — where she appeared to be an endearingly normal person (if tinier and paler than most) who hates push-ups as much as the rest of us.

I don’t know that I’d say Dakota’s head looks great; I think she needs a hair brush. Her face, of course, cannot be denied, so at least she’s got that going for her.
