Cosmo is so predictable. Several of its last covers included: 44 Sex Tips, Hot Moves No Man Can Resist, Have Sexier Sex, 101 Sex Moves, and now OMG SEX. (There was one that encouraged women to teach a guy to please them, which is very nice and empowered, but it also just made me think DO WE HAVE TO DO EVERYTHING? Learn to please them AND teach them how to please us? Can’t GQ pick up some of the slack here?) Of all those, I think “OMG SEX” is perhaps the most ridiculous. It’s like what a ten-year old with a new cell phone would text her friends after sneaking down to the TV at 2 a.m. to watch old Gossip Girl episodes.
I can’t really figure out this cover, though. OMG SEX has what looks like a setting sun behind it, which gives the hot pink a burnt-skin feel. But then Meghan is in blue and red, which does at least pop next to all that, but also competes with it. Her bra is clearly there because she didn’t want to show as much boob as the dress offered, but it looks awkward — almost like the sartorial proof of the cover line about “the confidence battle she’s still fighting.” But as much as I’m not inherently interested in Meghan Trainor, and the cover itself is a bit of a hodge-podge, I also quite like this. They’ve not only kept her curves, but emphasized them. Between this and Amy Schumer on InStyle this month, girls and women who are not sample sizes have a lot of aspirational celebrities to look at and listen to and hold up as reminders that — slowly but surely — we’re not under such constant pressure to reach for something that us beyond our DNA. It’s a start.
The interview, however… I am curious to leaf through it ONLY because the pull quotes they used for PR are really terrible. Take this one, about her boyfriend:
“We went on a double date — bowling and karaoke. He kissed me at the bowling alley. I told my security to step outside ‘cause I didn’t want to be watched. LOL. He was the best kisser ever. I know I’m really good at kissing, but I was shocked when he was.”
I mean… Is she 14? And was this an e-mail interview, or did she actually say “LOL”? Is SHE the person who’s texting her friends with “OMG SEX”? I need answers.
