As ever, some of these are better than others, although as a group, I think they are some of the more appealing covers Marie Claire has done this year. Bless them for giving Janelle Monae one giant sleeve, which she is rocking as only Janelle can. (I cannot imagine Emily Ratajkowski in one giant sleeve, model or no.) On a highly-specific note: I really like the font they’re using here. It feels very mid-90s in a way that is fresh again.
You can read an excerpt from each of their interviews here; Janelle’s seems as if it’s especially good, which doesn’t surprise me. To wit:
On respecting women: “People have to start respecting the vagina. Until every man is fighting for our rights, we should consider stopping having sex. I love men. But evil men? I will not tolerate that. You don’t deserve to be in my presence. If you’re going to own this world and this is how you’re going to rule this world, I am not going to contribute anymore until you change it. We have to realize our power and our magic. Because I am all about black-girl magic, even though I’m standing with all women. But this year? This year, I am so carefree black girl.”
I can’t believe no one has made a RESPECT THE VAGINA tee-shirt yet. (After all, I already own a THE FUTURE IS FEMALE one.)
