I was going to put this to a vote, but the longer I looked at it, the more strongly I felt that I had a heart full not of love but meh.
I actually think this would be 100% lovely if those sleeve/cape things were gone and it was just a plunging back halter.
I think you should have put it up for a vote! I think this and she looks great butt ruffle and all
I agree! I think the beading is really interesting and it looks lovely on her! I’m willing to forgive the butt crack ruffle.
I agree too! The more I look at it, the more I like it. It’s complex, unique, graceful, well-tailored and she pulls it off beautifully…
Agreed Mints – I love this. I think Anne looks amazing here.
It is FREEZING in London tonight so I’m surprised Anne isn’t covered in gooseflesh!
She looks like a reproduction Georgian button back armchair. Why would she do this to herself?
This is the most perfect description ever.
But that’s why I love it!
She’s bringing drama worthy of Les Mis to this, so I give her a pass.
I’m gonna come down on the I Love It side. It’s beautifully fitted, has interesting details and texture and she looks fabulous. Question, if I buy one, does it include the Hugh Jackman arm candy?
I was watching the red carpet live and she kept having to lift her arms like she was flapping her wings to fix the sleeves. She looked a bit silly which is why I agree on the big ol’ bowl of MEH on this one.
Nope. It reminds me of when I would put on my dads coat backward and pretend I had wings.
This wings are just a distracting gimmick that Hathaway didn’t need.
But in her defense, this silhouette is EVERYWHERE this holiday season. I tried to get some work function appropriate tops yesterday, and everything has the dolman sleeves/dropped shoulder/shoulder cut out. It’s a plague in woman’s wear.
I KNOW and I hate it so much.
Love it and it has an original, creative quality that translates into beautiful and not fugly. Perfect for the event.
Need a vote!
Her hair and face look amazing! That said, the dress sort of reminds me of Andy’s prom dress from pretty in pink. That is not a good thing.
And I thought *I* was the only one not on board with that dress.
I think Andy should’ve worn it as is – it was prettier!
Now that you’ve said that Andie’s prom dress is the only thing I can see. I hate that dress a lot. I t was fantastic before she got her hands on it.
This is terrible too.
Am I the only one noticing that he’s wearing a suit WITH a coat while she’s only wearing a flimsy (probably) backless gown? I’m all for va-va-voom, but if we’ve learnt something from the Dichess of Cambridge is that you can look pretty and awesome in a coat.
Ladies, let’s stand united (and warm): coats for all!!
PS: Btw, no, I don’t like the dress itself.
*Duchess, obviously. [Stupid finger]
Yea! And she was in London for crying out loud…judging by the Duchess’ collection, London must be the capital city of awesome coats!
remove the sleeves and it’s fab.
it reminds me of a swiss dot wedding cake.
Girl is smashing, but needs some dress rehab.
Easy unfug – ditch the butt ruffle and that obnoxious neck thing, and make it long sleeved and backless, like Hilary Swank’s Oscar dress.
Or even halter style, per Erin.
Wah this had so much POTENTIAL. I LOVE the sheath portion covered in pearls, but the bigger pearls down the middle, the weird curtain halter, and the freaky sleeves-cape are just overdesigned and ruinous.
This calls for some va va voom in the chest area. Don’t hate me cuz I watched 2 broke girls again lol. She looks spanxed on top. Otherwise really well done.
Exactly. Ellelake- her boobs looked squished flat in that dress. Hips, gorgeous. Belly, enviable. Boobs, bleh.
If the best part of your outfit is Hugh Jackman standing next to you, then you have a problem. Don’t like this or her. Blargh.
Damn her and her adorable hair! It’s making me want to cut mine all off knowing full well that it will NEVER lie down and look like that!
The dress is oh! so close! The sleeves are a bit much, but for a neutral coloured dress it had interest and was headed in the right direction before it took a pee break in Weirdsville.
Me too Sarah!! I had short hair for years, then grew it out (for two long, miserable years) and this makes me want to chop it off again. I have a hair appointment on Saturday…give me strength…
Oh. The dress. Cut the batwings off and lose the butt crack ruffle and we’re in business.
Does anyone else think she looks unbearably smug in the first picture? But so pretty…
I dearly love Anne Hathaway, but this dress looks like the lovechild of a sea urchin and flying squirrel. In short, helllllznaw.
If the wings were non-existant, I would love this, even the butt ruffle.
I think this is pretty gorgeous, except for the crazy sleeves that look like they would be SO annoying to wear – like a cardigan that’s constantly falling off your shoulders.
I don’t mind the butt ruffle so much because it starts above her actual butt, so it doesn’t look like she’s pooping fabric. (There are a lot of lovely words in that sentence, aren’t there?)
I ditto everyone else. Even on the butt ruffle.
This looks like something Lwaxana Troi would wear if depressed.
^^THIS!! And cap it off with a coy “Jean-Luc you shouldn’t think such things, I’m blushing!”
I don’t know whether to be proud or embarrassed that I got this reference.
But you KNOW she totally WOULD.
I love it. With the ruffle crack and all. Live with that.
Her tall frame can do it, and the short hair needs/allows crazy stuff in order not to look boring. The intricate cleavage remindds me os Alphonse Mucha in his Art Nouveau works.
Point for Hugh Jackman. Try to live without that.
She is pulling it off! No one else on earth could make that dress look amazing, but she is doing it.
I hate that dress. However, I really really hope you work Les Mis lyrics into all of the premiere posts you do. It will make my day!
will you join in our crusade? who will be strong and stand with me??
I actually love the shape of it, I think the “curtain” loop and the cut of the neck, back, and arms is beautiful. I really dislike the texture. I think it could have done without the little balls all over it and the bum ruffle. I wonder what it felt like to sit down on all of those large beads? Ach!
… was exactly what I was thinking. Can that be comfortable? At the end of the evening when you get undressed do you have tiny little pebble marks all over your seater?
She is lovely, but I hate that dress. There is NOTHING about it that I like. Ugh.
If you’re wearing Hugh Jackman on your arm, I’m not gonna notice what else you have on. Cannot. Wait!
You can take the girl out of a Batman movie…
Guess she just really likes bat wings.
Lose the wings, and this is a gorgeous dress that suits her and fits her perfectly. Butt ruffle and all.
Her face looks beautiful and she gets points for trying something unique, but…MEH.
Agree- she looks beautiful. The haircut is perfection.
I am NOT a fan of Hathaway – but even I have to admit she looks AMAZING. I like that she didn’t play it safe with the dress. She is totally pulling this off!
I think she looks great!
Anne has a very handsome chestular area, but this dress makes her breasts look all smeared and pancakey. Do not approve.
Very Auntie Mame at the top of the stairs. She just needs a long cigarette holder and turban. (Not sure if this makes it a fug or fab….)
Great comment. Auntie Mame should really be a patroness of Fug Nation.
I tried to concentrate on the dress but damn! Hugh looks good!
She looks like a white spotted platyhelminth. Which, I didn’t even know you could do. So there’s that.
Anne: Every day, I wonder every day, should I wear a dress, with a cape and wings?
Me: Don’t think about it, Hathaway, with all the years ahead of us, I will love your cape-wing dress and we will be together…every day.
(Okay, I tried)
At least it doesn’t have the curtain rod still in it!
Okay, but really: I would love this if it had merely some pearl details, rather than being covered in them. I love everything else about it. Also, it looks enormously better on Hathaway than it did on the runway, which I don’t think is entirely due to styling differences.
Now that so many pictures of this have been everywhere for a day or so, and I got used to its encrustedness, I’m amending that to:
I love it, full stop. No reservations.
This IMO is the epitome of modern Hollywood glamour.
I don’t love the dress (those sleeves need to go), but if making a new frock out of window curtains was good enough for Scarlett O’Hara, who am I to argue?
I was unsure of the dress in slide #2, but after HJ was introduced in slide #3, the goodwill from seeing his handsomeness buoyed me right through slides #4 and #5.
Anne Hathaway, no matter how hard you try you are NOT Liza Minnelli.
Sorry but I do not approve of the pixie cut for her, she is not Halle Berry or Liza. Her face makeup is too pale, she reminds me of Casper the friendly ghost. The dress is also a NO. I am a grumpmaster today. Love Hugh Jackman though.
She’s growing out her hair, which was shaved in Les Miz. Do you think she should wear a wig until it grows out again?
I love it. Then again, I have a hairstyle similar to it.
No, I think she’s keeping it that length. If she was growing it out then it would be a lot longer by now as they finished filming Les Mis a while ago.
I love her hair and I love her. I think she takes risks in fashion and in her work, and that’s always going to mean there are some mistakes and lots of critics. But I’d rather see her take the risk, succeed more often than she fails, and have fun doing it. And some of those risks have been really fun to watch — the haircut, this dress, and her unexpectedly perfect performance as Catwoman.
I love it. I really do! It is so interesting and she looks striking.
I also really love it. She looks fantastic top to bottom, and I am not normally any kind of Hathaway apologetic.
I hate it.
On a related point, Anne is unspeakably gorgeous but is sort of noodly in shape, with a small head and long neck and narrowish shoulders and just overall a frame and figure resembling a pliable noodle. Her outfit choices often emphasize this. Is this good? Is this bad? I’m not going to say. I’m just noting things here.
Love Anne Hathaway, love the butt ruffle, really love Hugh Jackman but the bat wings need to go.
Don’t love the flying squirrel but I do think she should have gotten married in this! Minus the butt ruffle, creepy and wrong. Sorry, you better have a bangin’ butt if you want to draw attention to it like that.
I love everything about this dress…the fit is amazing; love the back; the big beading (or whatever it is) adds unexpected texture…I even like the flying squirrel wings (such drama!).
Well, the dress is pretty amazing, luxe and well-made and pretty to look at; but like others above me, I can’t, cannot, look at it and not think of HOW UNCOMFORTABLE her entire night will be, unless she never sits down. In which case, her feet will hurt.
And, I’m sorry, I know I’ve said this before but I don’t think she has the face for high glamour. Maybe because she started out so young, but she looks very…I can’t explain. She has the bod for it, but not the carriage? The stature? The gravitas? I dunno.
Pearls. I’m so there. Ok, I’d pass on the butt ruffle, but I unabashedly love her dress.
Grade: B+ for intrigue and because SHE looks great even though her dress is slightly confusing.
Wait, there’s a curve on this grade: A+, on account of Hugh Jackman.
And…she didn’t accessorize with any jewelry that I can see. That’s the way to do it when your dress is already making PLENTY of “statement” on its own.
I think she looks lovely.
I think she looks absolutely gorgeous. Love everything about this, and it was the perfect kind of dress for her hair. I even like the bat wings!
I can’t stand Anne Hathaway. She always looks so pleased with her own awesomeness. Urgh. I do think she looks great with that hair, though. I don’t actually mind the dress. It’s nice to see something a bit different, even if it doesn’t 100% work.
She looks quite nice, ruffle, wings, and all, except the fabric reminds me of a bumpy chenille bedspread. But you should have heard me gasp out loud when Huge popped up!
^^ Thank you! I see grandma’s bumpy chenille bedspread too!
Hate the bat wings. From the pictures it looks like the only way to stand is with your hands on your hips. Hate!
Anne has a gorgeous body, and a gorgeous smile, and gorgeous hair, and appears to be wearing a very sparkly white potato sack. That dress wouldn’t work on any single person in the world.
I wouldn’t be able to keep my hands off of that dress because of the amazing textured dots. Looks-wise, it doesn’t do anything for me. But, goodness, I love me some bumps! And Mr. Jackman will do nicely as well. Thanks.
I love it.
If it takes adding Hugh Jackman to make your dress look good maybe the dress needs to be reconsidered. Tho I think I would love it without the cape/sleeves/wings/whatever they are!
I think this is STUNNING, full stop.
I’m definitely on the “love it” side, though the butt ruffle was ill-conceived.
Don’t care for the dress, but I appreciate the drama of it, I guess. I do wish celebrities would stop wearing those novelty manicures on the red carpet, though. If you just paint the tips of the fingers, you look like you’ve got dirt under your nails, even if the paint is silver.
Hathaway looks the way she always does: smug, self-satisfied, self-conscious and in a dress which usually screams “trying much, much too hard.”
The curtain analogy says it all – and it’s spotted material! She looks like she’s having fun, flapping her arms to take off?
I think the only thing this dress suffers from is not enough editing, because I think it would be better with out the sleeves, but it is BEAUTIFUL! I love the fabric and the details in it! Her hair & makeup look great and the shoes and jewelry are perfect! I just wish she was wearing diamond stud or pearl earrings! It fits her so beautifully that I have to say FAB!
sheet metal suppliers
The hair is fine but I’m concerned about her fashion choices since she got the chop.
I think I would like it in a color. More importantly, “On My Own” came on my iPod Shuffle as soon as I opened GFY today. Magic!
Oh it should be put to a vote. I surprised myself by loving it, right down to the crack ruffles.
I like it, too! It looks great with her short hair. I think she’s pulling it off.
This dress kinda of made my otherwise-unstellar day. I LIKE this a lot because I think she’s pulling it off despite the batwing sleeves and pearliness. I would NEVER equate Anne with Joan Collins, but I feel like Alexis would totally wear this dress and that makes it more than ok.
Love her hair! The dress I don’t like but she’s definitely making it work!
I absolutely LOVE the dress Anne is wearing!!! It’s gorgeous, unique and fits her like a glove! With her short hair, I think it’s one of the most amazing looks I’ve seen on her in ages.
Ditch the sleeves and mini cape, then we’re in business!
A classic case of the dress wearing the woman instead of the other way around.
This is fabulous, full stop. The fit is perfect, like it was poured on. Dramatic, but still elegant. Love, love, love!
I want to love it, but it really looks like she’s wearing Ye Olde Snuggie – The Royal Collection.
I think this is unique enough without veering off into CrazyTown, that I really like it. And she’s pulling it off perfectly. It’s fitted without looking suffocating, and not overly decorated, nor plain. I really do like it! I would never, in a gazillion years, wear it myself, but good on her!
I think her hair looks the best it’s ever looked! So beautiful. The dress is just meh. I don’t like white dresses.
This gown is just goofy.
Ms. Hathaway used to hit it out of the park every time: classy styles, great colors and fits. Since shooting Les Mis, she’s been almost-there with some downright misses (her wedding gown: eek!).
Maybe she needs to grow out her hair again.
This is a dress that Joan Crawford would have worn c. 1933 (in a melodrama probably involving marital scandal and some mislaid/stolen jewels, costarring Melvyn Douglas or William Powell or maybe both of them). You, Anne Hathaway, are NO Joan Crawford. This dress is wearing YOU.
