The CFDA Awards are much smaller than the Met Gala, but they’re still a big night in fashion, and often designers use that to showcase stuff that’s a bit more experimental. Janelle, therefore, is a perfect example of that: This melds Christian’s edgier side, which isn’t always on display on a red carpet, with his stellar grasp of construction. It’s like the business-chic version of Robyn’s wrapping paper leg, and other than wishing I could see a pointy toe of a shoe poking out, I love it on her. It’s weird and it’s wonderful and it fits like a dream, and it’s the kind of ambitious risk that’s fun to see on a night honoring the best in fashion.

It’s sliiiiightly off in the back, maybe?

But I’m not going to dwell on it. Mostly I just shared this photo to show you just how glamorous the red-carpet setup often isn’t. It’s always amusing to look at the photos knowing that this expanse of pavement and cord-muddled rug is what’s on the other end of them.
