Golden Globes Well Played, Taylor Swift

well-played

Praise the lord of all that sparkles and shines. Taylor Swift has started dressing more like a grown-up. Don’t get me wrong — obviously, I will always cleave to a sparkle. I haven’t totally lost my mind. But don’t you agree that we were all due for a change, and it’s nice that we got one?

Those panels in the back can’t be sheer. The fabric looks too stiff for that.

  2. Sylvia

Agreed. Not sheer. And I did like this on her. Love the color. I’m still meh on all things fishtail, but considering the model, it’s a step up.

And that was a fantastic joke, although I think I enjoyed the James Cameron burn just as much.

I am NOT a fan of Taylor Swift, so I almost always immediately groan when I see her on a red carpet. But even I have to admit this is lovely. The back is gorgeous! And yes, thank goodness, that appears to be taupe and not sheer. Well-played indeed.

same her. plus she is like everywhere, so tiring. BUT, this was amazing! and what is even more amazing is the fact that its not nude, white or red. I am seriously shocked.

Looks sheer to me. Blow up the photo and tell me you can’t see freckles.

It looks like it’s maybe a little baggy in the pelvis region? I have a thought that she picked this out at the last minute, post-breakup, so she looks pretty sexy but maybe not all necessary alterations were made.

  6. Kate

Completely disagree! It was too aging and whatever stick-on bra she was using made her bust look really fake/oddly shaped.

    • hb
      0

I agree with Kate, I usually like what she wears, but I have nothing good to say about this look…aging and ill fitting!

      • Esme
        0

I agree with Kate AND hb. I thought she looked about 40 years old in this, and she needed better boob support; I hated both the shape and position of the girls.

Although I did thoroughly enjoy the look of bitter, blazing enmity on her face when Adele won the Golden Globe for best song.

I think having TSwift , finally, look a little older than a Toddlers n’ Tiaras competitor is a good thing.

Love the colour and this is a nice departure for her.

However, I’ve decided that every single chick who wore a fishtail dress gets an automatic point deduction. Nearly great, Tay, but I have growing anger against that godawful mermaid thing.

  8. Elle

I… want to like it. And I like some aspects of it – great colour, love the back, LOVE the earrings. I think she would have looked a bit younger-sex-kitten had she broken out some loose Veronica Lake waves but, that may just be me.

Still… it’s sort of wrinkly, and it does do odd things to her chesticular area. Plus, it’s also T Swift, and she’s one on a long list of celebs I’d like to just stay home, bake cookies, read a book, start a rock garden etc. Although, that being said, that awesome Fey/Poehler joke may have been worth her coming to the GG after all.

Elle, I agree entirely. And “chesticular” is going to crack me up for the rest of the day!

Flat out fantastic. A+ for the aubergine gown and perfect hair/makeup/jewelry.

I love the back and I love the bling (Lorraine Schwartz earrings!). I am perfectly okay with the front.

  11. ErinE

I really don’t like this. i don’t like the color and I hate the front. The cut feels 90s for me. The back is definitely sexy and much better than the front.

    • tarasaurusrex
      0

THIS. How is no one else commenting on how 90′s this is? I feel like this would be right at home at the Golden Globes 14 years ago.

        0

I loved this color… on my bridesmaids in 1998. Even the bodice (from the front, anyway) looks very bridesmaid-adjacent. Plus, the wrinkles. Evils of satin! Not a fan.

    • lavonspants
      0

YESSS!!! To the “nineties” comment!! THANK YOU!! That’s exactly what it is for me, due to the neckline, primarily, I think. I can totally see Claire or Donna or Valerie on 90210 wearing a crop top with that neckline and mom jeans!

Add to that the oddness that it creates in the chesticular (tm Elle, above) and pelvicular regions, the grey-ish helmet hair and the “I’ve been crying” makeup, and I did NOT AT ALL think this was good. Good thing this wasn’t her first post-break-up outing — that People’s Choice cleavage dress was a MUCH better Revenge Outfit.

    • Bubba

Yes, me three. I really like the color, but don’t love the dress and think it is dated and not modern. Maybe it is the material? Is it taffeta?

    • Billie
      0

Exactly! I wore the exact neckline to my winter formal in 1996. And those straps look a smidge too loose on her, as if she’s holding her shoulders a certain way so they don’t fall off.

    • Dani
      0

Yes!! I have been scrolling until someone said that! The back is lovely, the colour is great, but the front – and particularly the neckline – is 90s ahoy.

  12. Katie
    0

Didn’t love the square neckline or the color. And was it just me or did her hair look grayish throughout the show? Perhaps it was just the lighting inside (or post break-up coloring), but she was looking very gray during the show.

    • Tiffany
      0

I agree, the square neckline was not cute. I loved the color, but the best part was the way the back was cut, IMO.

And is it just me, or has the past few red carpet moments been a coming out party for Taylor’s implants?

  13. malie

Looks like sheer fabric over a lining of some sort to me. It seems there’s more than one layer in the taupe part.

  14. Hannah
    0

Oh, also, if you look at the dress from the side, those panels gradually fade to eggplant towards the bottom. Definitely not sheer.

  15. Pouncer

I wish the front weren’t wrinkled. Other than that, it’s good to see her change it up. And her hair is gorgeous.

  16. Sajorina
    0

I like this! The dress is beautiful and different for her! Plus, sexy is always welcomed! Its color was a revelation… She looks GORGEOUS in it! Makeup & jewelry is simple and flawless! The only thing I don’t like is the hair because of its stiffness, but at least it wasn’t crazy & wild! FAB!

  17. Minda
    0

Oh, I loved this. It is very much a 1950′s cut, but with a more exposed back. I like seeing her look more grown-up and in a subdued color. She looks lovely.

  18. Elizabeth
    0

Love the color, hate that it’s all wrinkled.

  19. Bottle Ginger
    0

Love the top, love the color, love the panels in back, love the fact that she’s wearing something sophisticated.

    However…

She needs to avoid fishtails as long as she lived. When I saw a full-body shot, I said to myself “Gosh, I never realized that she has a very long waist and very short legs”. The fishtail is deadly for her overall porportions.

  20. Sara
    0

Sometimes I don’t know what you ladies are thinking.I saw this and thought, “oh, Taylor Swift went back to prom after that beautiful white dress with the plunging neck.” I have a dress from Snodaze 1996 that had the EXACT neckline as this, and wrinkled cheaply in the same way as this dress. I’ll admit the back is cool and sophisticated, but you can’t have a fab if only one side works. Are you passing out fabs because of the general underwhelming feeling of the evening? Where is SWINTON and Blanchett to raise the bar? GG 2013 was a snooze fest.

  21. Gine
    0

I didn’t like this at all. The cut reminds me of all the terrible spaghetti-strapped dress my friends and I wore in middle school/high school, the fabric is wrinkly, it’s not flattering to her bust at all…yeah. Do not want.

  22. Sarah
    0

Am I the only one that thinks the top looks like a bridesmaids dress? The fabric is very Davids Bridal.

    • Other Emily
      0

Yeah, I actually just wore a David’s Bridal dress an awful lot like this (color and fabric-wise, not cut) in a wedding. It was fine, but it’s not what I would want to emulate on the red carpet. That said, I do think she looks a lot better and more grown-up than she usually does, so it’s still an improvement. Too bad she couldn’t try to be happier for Adele…

      • witjunkie

Her bitch-face during Adele’s (utterly charming) acceptance speech made my NIGHT.

      • Tiffany
        0

I had a bridesmaid dress I had to wear that had this exact neckline! I believe it was from David’s, too!

  23. Minda
    0

Honestly, I am confused. Just because people had dresses with this neckline in the 90′s does not make it a 90′s neckline! Does no one watch old movies?! This is a classic neckline. I agree fishtail cuts too many women at a weird place and if a long drink of water like Swift can barely pull it off, it’s best not done. But the neckline is not 90′s

    • ErinE
      0

I’m not saying it originated in the 90s, but in the 90s everyone was wearing this cut everywhere, to the point I think it feels outdated in 2013. I can just see Rachel Leigh Cook in this with a short sassy mussed hair do with mini butterfly clips, or The Rachel messy layers.

  24. Tina

I liked the dress and loved the color on her, but I did not like her little sneer when Adele won. Not cool.

  25. TaraMisu
    0

I think she looks beautiful, the color of this dress suits her to a T. It so nice to see her looking like a grown up.

I did laugh hysterically at the “leave Sam Fox alone” comment :D

  26. Leah
    0

I’m surprised! When I saw this, I immediately thought, “Fug girls will hate the wrinkles in the front.” But, it’s a good color on her–I liked it well enough.

And, must say, if I had her back (you know what I mean), I would never wear anything that covered it up.

    • Gabi
      0

Yes! That is the first thought I had as well – I thought for sure they would take her to task on the awful satiny wrinkles. And the fishtail too! I don’t think Swifty should get a pass for that either. That being said, I like how this is such a change for her personal style? And the color is great – best part of the dress for sure.

  27. Victoria
    0

    I vote sheer, sadly.

  28. Jen

The only thing I liked about this was the color, which is different for her. Otherwise, it looks like a too-big prom dress.

  29. Dazie

I had to doubletake- I thought it was Charlize Theron there for a sec. They really could be sisters. (as long as Taylor Swift keeps styling like this)

  30. Stefanie

I like it. I love the color and Im pumped to see her attempting something sexy. She looks great.

  31. KMG
    0

The joke was so great – even more so because it’s true! She does need to stay away and spend some time on her own. Maybe Tina has appointed herself Taylor’s get a grip friend. I love the dress, but did anyone else catch her raging bitchface when Adele won?

  32. Sandra
    0

I think it isn’t fitted quite properly because the Side-Boob Danger Level is headed to the right-hand side of the dial.

  33. witjunkie
    0

I loved the “stay away..” comment and that it was followed up with Tina’s, “No, she needs to be alone for a while and find out who she is!” which is the other thing we are all thinking.

  34. Liz985

Have to give the girl her due. She may be a whackadoodle when it comes to boys, but she is a stunner.

  35. Alicia

She looks beautiful but the dress seems like it doesn’t fit from the front. Definitely needs to be altered for a more fitted, smooth look.

  36. Helen

Count me in with the “I’m Sick of Seeing Her, But This Looks Terrific” camp.

I do have quibbles. I agree with observations that the boob region looks a little weird, and I do not like spray-molded hairstyles like this. I think it needs a jeweled thingamabob at the narrowest point, near her head, that looks like it’s holding the hair in place, even if that’s pure illusion.

But these are minor. As a whole, it’s a win.

I love a good mermaid dress (it’s the bootcut jean of formal wear), but the neckline of this was reading bridesmaid-y. LOVE the back, though.

I disagree on liking this, except for the back (how could anyone not like that back?). I find Donna Karan to be too mature for her.

  39. halley
    0

I think it is sheer, which is actually great, because 99% of the time Donna Karan is zzzzzz. And while we’re at it, Carolina Herrera is bedspread zzzzz. I know that has nothing to do with Taylor, but I always group the two designers together.

  40. Amy

Hmmm I don’t know about this one… really not feeling the hair and makeup. Hair looks a bit too greasy slick back for my likings. Just a bit of a nothing style. Also I know she works an ashy blonde usually, but to me it looks just a touch too ashy at the front, which in combination with the style, makeup and somewhat lack of eyebrow leaves the whole thing looking a bit lackluster.

  41. R
    0

I like the hair & makeup, the colour and the concept but I think it is ruined by the stiff, creased fabric. If this had been a softer, floatier fabric I would have been totally onboard.

  42. Betsy
    0

It’s okay. My sister texted me that it reminded her of what someone wore to winter formal around 1998 (our younger high school years), and honestly now that’s ALL I can see. I mean granted, no one would have had that train, quite as low of a back, or those panels, but otherwise the color and the cut are extremely reminiscent of high school winter formal and that’s not a good thing for an award show.

  43. SerialGoth

I cannot stand Taylor Swift, but I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t like the dress. The color is am unexpected choice, and while I’m sort of over the fishtail thing too, at least she’s tall enough to pull it off. Not sure about the hair though. I like the idea of the hair up, but this looks a little dirty and too messy, like she put it up herself in the limo on the way to the show.

  44. PinkieBling

I love the back. The front is meh.

  45. Morris
    0

The breasticle area looks odd. Much better from the back. Also, did anyone notice Swifty’s face when Adele won (& deserved to)?!?! Hi-LAIR!!! She is definitely of the spoilt brat gen, she was positively surly.

  46. googler
    0

I don’t like the color, and the satin mermaid makes me think cruel bridesmaid dress. I must concede, though, that La Swift makes it look as good as it possibly can.

  47. Tarn
    0

Can’t stand her, and ugh, as if I needed to add “ungracious loser” to the reasons why.

But I do like the dress, esp. the color. And good for her for finally getting her damn macaroni hair off her damn face and not wearing Wet ‘n Wild #83 fire-engine red lipstick.

  48. Rebecca
    0

The ONLY thing I like about this look is the color and that’s only because it’s a color she doesn’t usually do. I completely agree with everyone calling this a 90′s formal dress. The second I saw it I was reminded of many formal dresses for dances during my high school days in the late 90′s. Plus it just doesn’t fit right in the front, it’s so baggy in the torso.

And I know we don’t talk about bodies here, BUT, does her chest seem a lot bigger lately? I only really noticed because I’m really small like how she used to be…and I’m noticing she’s…not so small lately. I thought it was just good bras (because I know how well those work), but I don’t know how she’d have much of a bra on with an open back like that?

    • Sajorina
      0

Girls keep growing until they’re 21! She may have naturally grown some in the chest area in the last couple of years, but I don’t see a big difference!

  49. Lori

Why don’t celebrity wranglers ever buy a damn hand steamer and fix the wrinkles before the red carpet?

  50. Katie

It looks like a bridesmaid dress with a fishtail. Awful awful dress.
The back is pretty though… :/

  51. Lauren Fritsch

i hated this dress! reminded me of 90s calvin klein silhouettes- ugh the neckline. ugh the shoulder laces/straps. ugh the shiny silk. ugh. it would be fine on a smokin hot 60 year old but just looks lame on Taytay.
