Golden Globes Well Played, Anne Hathaway

The pregnancy rumors started on Twitter just before the red-carpet did (she’s been married for, what, two whole months now? I’m surprised it took this long) and having just seen Anne Hathaway in this dress looking sleek and lean, we pooh-poohed them. But then we got a good look at this two-piece Chanel, and although she does not herself look pregnant, the bodice DID appear to be leaving room for gestational hijinks. Cosette ahoy?

I don’t know. I’m liking it better in the pictures than I did watching live. Can we also talk about how she always seems like she is “acting” when she is just supposed to be genuine, e.g. acceptance speech? I’m historically tough on Hathaway, though, so maybe I’m extra sensitive.

I thought she seemed totally natural, though maybe a little pukey.

I can’t decide if the “oh golly gee I’m so embarrassed to be the center of all this attention” thing is just an act, or if that’s how she just naturally is. She seems really sheepish in a lot of pictures and video I’ve seen of her, which is totally fine if she actually IS sheepish, but annoying if she isn’t? I have no clue what to think about this woman.

She shows up, she’s gracious, she doesn’t embarrass herself, her co-workers, or her studio, and she puts up with endless online nitpicking and/or speculation about her shape, her smile, her attitude, and her private life.

If she’s “acting” that part, I’m ok with that.

Audrey Hepburn would be proud. This is so very classy and beautiful. Love those bracelets too!

My thoughts exactly when I saw her: Audrey Hepburn would have approved. I loved this.

I dunno. I just thought this look so boring. And I thought it gave her no shape, which is perhaps to be hiding things, I really have no idea, but I thought she could do so much better.

Yes! It would look great on Betty White and I mean that with no snark or irony. It’s just too old for Annie.

I was warming up to her a bit, but she ruined that by her insufferable acceptance speech and her extra “shout-outs” when the film won.

she sort of “Kanye’d” her producer there..she probably thought it was okay when J. Garner did it but it was understandable since her husband got shut out from the Oscars and this might be his only chance to thank everyone..but her? she’s the frontrunner, she will still get her chance! as laineygossip would say, SIT DOWN GIRL!

          0

“Now I have this blunt object in which to beat down any self-doubt.” is the new “You like me! You really like me!”

          Ugh to all of it.

Double ICK on the last line of her acceptance speech. Just seemed so contrived.

    • Elle
      0

Ha, that was my exact status re: Kanye-ing her producer. I loved his retort: “I haven’t forgotten anyone yet, but that’s because I haven’t started my speech.” I have to agree, though… what happened to the likeable, gamine, friendly, slightly self-deprecating Anne of yore? Now she’s all serious “actrice” with her faux-genuine acceptance speeches. Did she lose all of her spunk after the Oscars debacle? Did she lend it to Emma Stone and never get it back? Seriously, if there was ever a time to redeem herself in the public eye, this would be it.

      • Annie E
        0

What, exactly, wasn’t genuine about her acceptance speech?

        • Heather
          0

I think it may have been genuine, but it also felt acted. The two are not mutually exclusive. Anne has been the favorite to win, and to me her speech felt performed. Doesn’t mean she didn’t sincerely MEAN any of it though.

        • meggiemoo
          0

It just felt like she sat in front of her mirror for two weeks, saying the words and practicing her expressions. Contrast it to Jennifer Lawrence’s speech, which I’m sure was also practiced but felt unrehearsed.

        • Lori
          0

Her speech didn’t feel genuine to me because she was the ONLY person who was surprised she won. I could see being a little flustered, but the whole, “golly gee, I just can’t BELIEVE it!” was over the top.

      • Trent
        0

Right? I like Anne (with an “e”) and think she is insanely talented, but ever since her marriage it feels like she has decided to let her inner Thea-tuh Act-ress out at all times — as if she were the real-life equivalent of Kristen Wiig’s “Oh, don’t make me sing” character. I shudder to think of how she’ll act if she wins the Oscar next month.

However, she did look AMAZING in that Chanel outfit, and her hair and makeup were flawless.

        • mepe
          0

She looked fine…she’s really pulling off the whole Audrey Hepburn thing…isn’t that what’s she’s going for? However, when winning a best actress award one’s speech shouldn’t come off as acted or performed…Jessica Chastain’s speech may have been rehearsed but it sounded very real and sincere…as should an acceptance from an actress of this caliber. But maybe it was the pregnancy hormones causing Anne’s obnoxiousness? I didn’t even know that was a possibility until I read this fug.

She looks great and not at all pregnant in all pics. She’s one of those girls that probably would show until 5 months anyway.

I love her Globes dress – very 1960′s and classic. I especially like that it is two pieces. The beaded dress for the AFI awards is beautiful, though not loving the black tights with the red shoes. I might have gone with a black shoe to make it more seamless and not as jarring. Or, a subtly patterned nude hose with the red shoe. Aside: did anyone see the sketch on Jimmy Kimmel about how the newscasters and weather people have been hypying up the cold temps in LA? Hilarious.

I thought her hair and face looked perfect. So cute and classy. I was “meh” about the dress though. And totally off-topic, I thought it was kind of hilarious how she was bear-hugging Amanda Seyfried the entire time they were all up there accepting the award for Les Mis, and Amanda seemed to be thinking the same thing I was (why is Anne Hathaway trying to give me the heimlich maneuver??) I also thought she was kind of phony and annoying during her acceptance speech, but at least she looked lovely doing it.

    • Annie E
      0

Yeah, that was odd. I love Anne and all that, and Amanda was probably fine with it and this touchy-feely-ness was nothing new, but if I were her I would have had to use every single brain cell to keep myself from throwing her off me onstage. Don’t touch me.

  10. Justyna

The dress is a little bit meh in my opinion. And about her being pregnant – maybe she’s just gaining back the weight she had to lose to film ‘les miserables’? As far as I heard she had to drop a lot of pounds, so it’s understandable every gained pound back would be noticeable. Her face is gorgeous btw.

  11. Dazie
    0

Yeah. Meh. She looks ethereal, slender, classic blah blah blah. And I’m not complaining- I’m super glad she left the black backpack dress and gladiator dominatrix shoes home, but there’s understated and then there’s no statement.

  12. Rebecca

I like this okay but I REALLY wish she would have done some fun jewelry to brighten it up and make it more fun. As it is now it’s kind of zzzzz but I keep imagining it with some awesome turquoise or red jewels and then I really love it. Does Rachel Zoe still style her?

I think I’m glad I turned to Downton Abbey for an hour and missed her acceptance speech, sounds like it would have annoyed me.

I am beginning to think Anne has some kind of “condition” I won’t try to diagnose, but there’s something off about her. Like grabbing the microphone and mugging and grabbing her co-workers, etc. when the moment called for something different. Happiness and then attention when the speaker was talking. At best, her emotional intelligence is very lacking. And she is not Audrey Hepburn, who was a very classy sensitive person who did work for Unicef for heaven’s sake!

    • Sara

Its called being a total drama queen. Its been said before- shes that LOUD girl in drama club who always had to be the center of attention and always played the starring role in the school production. These people dont change personalities, some of them just happen to make it to Hollywood.

I don’t know what it is about Anne Hathaway, but as a 43 yr old mother of 2, I want to be her when I grow up.

  15. Stefanie

My first thought was “Pregnant” when I saw her just because the top is so roomy. She looks great though.

I find her insufferable. When she ran up on stage to thank her manager I wanted her to trip. Way to be a thunder stealer Annie.

  16. Miriam
    0

Tough crowd. Comparing her to Audrey Hepburn as a UNICEF ambassador seems unfair. Anne is 30, at the beginning of her marriage and an active career. Hepburn’s work for UNICEF started at age 58 until her death. If you google Anne’s charity work, there is a respectable list too. Don’t know why I’m apologizing for Anne but can’t we admire people for their different efforts without being < someone else?

  17. gryt

Oh but I’m sure the producer was only too happy to give away some of HIS very limited thank-you speech time to Hathaway. I mean, she had to thank her agent!!!

Don’t know or care if she’s preggers but this Chanel was gorgeous. Elegant and unlike anything else that night. I have now decided she must never grow her hair out.

Not a fan of the Laura Ashley number she wore to the AFI thing though. That was a bit too precious.

  20. TaraMisu

I loved this, she looked so polished and put together. But when she turned sideways I was like “oooo preggers!” LOL! It was just the extra room in the top I guess, her publicist said no baby…. but we know how that goes. Anyway, she can be quite annoying but I imagine if it was me, I’d probably embarrass myself a few times before I got jaded about the awards ;)

“Gestational hijinks” made me lol. That aside, loved the white two piece – she looked beautiful and comfortable.

  22. ChristieLea

Fah, she had to lose, what, 25 pounds for Les Miz? And it’s not like she had 25 pounds to spare. She looks “heavier” because she’s presumably gained most of it back, or at least is eating more than two squares of “oatmeal paste” a day.

I don’t think I quite have an opinion on the pregnancy rumors. Mayyybe…but peplum is in, she’s thin enough to pull it off without looking too curvy, and it’s a lovely dress. Being in my first trimester, I am wearing my fitted clothes to get use of them before I start showing (and who knows when they will fit again!), so maybe that’s a way for her to have a last hurrah with a little breathing room.

I haven’t watched the speech yet, but it is on my DVR. From what y’all are saying, I think I will be thoroughly annoyed.

  26. Helen

I didn’t watch, so these photos are all I’ve got to go on, and from them I’d say both looks are terrific. Very well played!

Chilly in LA? It’s fecking FREEZING. They must have had a lot of heat lamps cranked way up on the red carpet. She looks fantastic, no doubt about it. But somehow it doesn’t matter because of that weird display on stage with Amanda…really off-putting.

    • Sandra
      0

Babe, it’s 50 degrees F in LA according to the Weather Channel. Which is a little on the low side for your part of the world, but 56 damn degrees warmer than where I am. So put a sweater on and be brave.

      • Anne B
        0

It is 52 degrees out right now, and for a California girl (I’m in the northern part of the state now, but I grew up in L.A.) that is so cold.

        @Melly, I feel ya.

  28. lilywise

She and her publicist have both said she’s not pregnant.
I didn’t really care one way or another about Hathaway … until she Kanye’d the mic to get more thanks in for her peeps. So rude. It’s not about you!! And then the weird draping herself over Amanda? That felt like she was hijacking the camera from her producer. Which even if that’s not why she was doing it, it was still a weird pose to strike, I don’t care how close you are to your friend/costar/spouse/lover. You’re in public. Stop the clinging.

  29. Aria

To me, this was just overwhelmingly fine. It’s pretty, it fits her, it’s classic… but kinda ho-hum. I mean, she certainly won’t look back in embarrassment, but it doesn’t really stand out either.

  30. Sara
    0

I sincerely hope shes pregnant because otherwise that little pouf in front just looks ill fitting. I get if thats the “look” but it “looks” dumb and silly.

My personal theory is she did this on purpose (and is prob not pregnant) simply to keep speculation going and keep her name in the spotlight. Everyone knew this was HER night and she is making sure we disect every inch of her.

I know I started showing slightly at 10 weeks (more like bloating) but come on, if girl is less than 4 or 5 mo pregnant no way would she be showing this early. Its like those first timers you see constantly holding their nonexistent belly just to let everyone know there is something growing in there.

I like her, but count me among those who found her acceptance speech incredibly rehearsed. Sally Field did not look especially amused.

As for the outfit, I thought it was boring, and I’m ready for her to grow out the pixie cut.

Then again, I thought she looked incredibly airbrushed, almost beyond the point of recognition, on the Glamour cover.

I think Sally Field blew her a little kiss…but then, Sally Field strikes me as an incredibly professional good sport.

Meh. Pretty dress and a pretty girl (woman) but I’m not overly wowed by it at all. She does look lovely, though. And I agree that he speech, while parts of it might have been genuine, seemed overly rehearsed and a version of “you like me! you really like me!” that had me rolling my eyes.

I think that is Matthew Weiner and that made me go “Wha…” (they’re both kind of annoying to me).

I think this is really beautiful, but yes, also kind of boring. I do covet her hair, though. She should keep it this way forever.

Her and her “blunt object”…please. I was left gagging on her phoniness. I assume she probably was genuinely happy to have won, but she didn’t come off very genuine at all. I love the hair and makeup (FULL DISCLOSURE ALERT: My own hair is cut in a very similiar style, so maybe I’m slightly biased), but the outfit itself did nothing for me. It was neither good or bad. Some color would’ve been nice though.

  42. Sylvia

This is a case of the face and hair making the dress work. The dress on it’s own is not but not a wow, though I quite like it. But the whole look comes together

That speech was…something. I don’t dislike Anne, but “campaigning for the Oscar Anne” I could do without.

  43. 7Kellx
    0

I like this. I think it’s safe and nothing new but it’s classy and dialed back. I was pretty proud of that because I expected something so in your face for her.

One thing I found so funny was that she appeared to be maybe show Teary/doe eyed before they even announced her as the winner. I felt like she was building up for this whole big oh my god! faux surprised face. I mean, she HAD to know she as gonna win!

That said I kinda am liking her again. I feel like she’s really squirrelly and neurotic and doesn’t know how to channel her energy properly a lot of the time. She’s also very dramatic but hey, she’s an actress…isn’t that the point?

  44. R
    0

This is definitely not a fug but it is nowhere near fab status. It’s just a huge resounding fine…carry on with your business Ms Hathaway. It may aswell be a nude fishtail for me, or a black cocktail dress on Jennifer Aniston – that’s about how interesting I think it is.

  45. Sajorina

She really looked BEAUTIFUL last night! The dress is pure understated elegance and the styling is PERFECTION! I love that she had tiny pearl-like beads on her nails! And the other outfit is so cute and fabulous! WANT IT! I’m genuinely happy for her! Well deserved, Anne! Congrats on the win!

  46. Janice

In the unlikely event she is pregnant, it looks like pregnant in the way Mia Farrow was in Rosemary’s Baby. To me, she looks tired and over-thin, not surprising after shooting Les Miz, getting married, and doing publicity for Les Miz, back to back.

Those black leotards kill that light dress dead. But she looked great from the knees up.

  47. TC

I have been an Anne H fan ever since she was perfect in “The Princess Diaries.”
I even watched the DVD extras when Garry Marshall stated that he KNEW she was perfect for the fit after her audition because of her goofiness.
That said, it has been wonderful to see her style evolution (thank you, Fug Girls, for recapping said evolution). I think her pick at the GG was spot-on. She looked classic, beautiful, and I’m excited to see what she wears to the Oscars.
HOWEVER. I just can’t (cannot) with her “adopted” personality. It’s so over the top and so contrived.
Is she riding the Natalie Portman train and propelling herself more into the spotlight with a potential pregnancy? At least N.P. was genuine with THAT.
The strategically placed “covers” of her utero-region (award frames, high belt, peplum dress… it just seems so…contrived.
And kudos to the well-dressed Amanda Seyfried for not elbowing Anne in her non-gestating uterus for the incessant glomming and squeezing as Anne glanced at the camera to make sure she was in the spotlight.
    Ugh.

I wish someone would actually watch an Audrey Hepburn film and then realize that she and Hathaway have about as much in common as a Siamese cat has to a ferret. Hepburn wouldn’t have been caught dead in such a dull, figure-flattening dress.

And unlike Hathaway, whose self-consciousness, smugness and false modesty knows no bounds, Hepburn was the epitome of grace, class, and genuine rectitude and humbleness.
Please stop comparing them, or poor Hepburn will probably bore her way to Australia.
