Golden Globes Fugs and Fabs and Fines: The Ladies of Smash

We may disagree about these ensembles, but I do I think we are all in agreement that we can’t WAIT to hate-watch Smash again.

I think Megan Hilty looks great — but she needed some pop of jewelry. Great earrings or a statement necklace or an arm of bangles. And since she didn’t have any of that … I think maybe you’re right that NBC is not giving her their full attention.

Agree re Megan, lilywise.. The color is great, it’s flattering, it fits beautifully. I think with some better styling she’d look fantastic.
Debra Messing looks awful. Are those poorly made drapes she’s wearing?

How are the shoes are staying on McPhee’s McPheet? There’s the plastic/clear thing going across her toes.

Ah, didn’t even notice. This is what happens when you write these things pre-coffee. Thanks!

No problem — I’m like “Jessica and Heather usually despise clear toe/foot wranglers. Have they gone soft on us?” Fortunately not — we love your snark!

Does anyone know who made those shoes? I shall enter them into states evidence. They are a crime against toes.

Agreed. My feet are cringing just looking at them.

most horrific shoes. I think McPhee’s whole outfit makes her look like a hussy. (hussy? and I sound approximately 85 years old….)

Whoops, ignore the second “are” in the first sentence.

Megan Hilty wins this one handily, though I do agree that it needed some jewelry.

    Messing looks pretty good, too.

Well, we ALL KNOW who should have been MARILYN. I mean how they pulled THAT one off is a crime. Like those plastic toe straps.

    There’s clear on her toes.

I love this, on tv and on iPad screen. I’ve actually never thought much of her on red carpets till last night. O thought jpshenwas all that hot. But she looks great! One of my favs.

I mean–I thought she wasn’t all that hot…no idea what my clumsy fingers and autocorrect put there…ha

I am concerned that Messing’s skirt might be weirdly see-through…it could just be a trick of the light, as I didn’t investigate further for fear of what I might find.

IT IS. IT IS SEE THROUGH. WHEN WILL THE MADNESS END?!

Messing is a mess. I didn’t think she could look more flat chested the normal but that is just…unflattering.

I’m sorry, but I don’t care about Megan Hilty either! I’m used to Debra disappointing me in the fashion department, but now she’s starting to depress me! But, thank you, McPhee for bringing the sassy! I love how sexy she looks, when she’s always looked so “girl next door”! I love her dress & how bangin’ her body looks in it! I’m intrigued by her shoes and I love that they’re not the boring same old! Her makeup is beautiful, but I wish she was wearing her hair down! Also love her clutch and jewelry!

Megan Hilty needs to bling up the styling a bit, but I love that dress and wish it were mine.

I know Debra doesnt have much in the chest region, but I swear she chooses things that mash her down even flatter on purpose! She always does this to herself.

The other 2 are fine. But my hair and McPhee’s are looking suspiciously the same right now and Im eating a granola bar sitting at my desk.

There was a terrific Live from Lincoln Center special on New Year’s Eve, a tribute to the late Marvin Hamlisch featuring Audra McDonald, Kelli O’Hara, Maria Friedman, and little Megan Hilty, among others. I thought she acquitted herself extremely well among the big girls.

Funny that you bring up the Lincoln center special because I thought the two dresses Megan wore on that (the first was a crushed velour dark purple and the other was a metalic number) were infinitely better and more interesting than what she wore last night. Between the unimaginative hair, and the lack of accessories I was so disappointed because I DO CARE ABOUT MEGAN HILTY! Desperately! Her talent in every department runs circles around McBland and it is pure comedy that Smash is pushing her as the star. Let Megan be your star!

McPhee’s dress is sexy but not appropriate (IMHO) for the CCA. Save this style for Heidi Klum. However, what’s with the Jolie leg thrust?? McPhee’s not the only guilty one, of course, but really! It’s getting moldy…

    LOL @ McPheet!

I LOVE Megan’s dress. I want it. Sure, it’s not edgy, but it’s flattering, a beautiful color, and she won’t cringe looking back at it 20 years from now.

As for Messing – she’s committed far worse crimes.

Debra Messing = Belle from Beauty and the Beast at Gaston’s funeral.

BUAHAHAHA! It’s so much better if you imagine that scenario.

Heh, heh! Except that Belle is like 8 sizes smaller! And, why, oh why was that scene not in the movie?

Sorry, McPhee’s dress makes me stabby. I actually agree that it’s working for her, quite well… but considering I just saw her on the Fashion Polish with an exposed bra/sternum– put it away, McPhee! I’m over it. I also hate her hair.

HAAAATE McPhee’s hideous mcpheet. And I so agree about Hilty. McPhee can’t act her way out of a paper bag, and it’s excruciating watching her try to emote behind those cold, dead, shark eyes. Thanks to Stephen Spielberg’s hard-on for her, we’re stuck with her in this show, unfortunately, but Megan blows her out of the water. Makes no sense. I wish the yokel would go back to obscurity where she belongs.

Yes, please, WHYOHWHY does no one see that Hilty is the talent of that show far and away? They are losing me by this reality-avoiding tactic they have of pretending McPhee has all this star power, when Hilty is basically acting and singing and dancing her into invisibility. Stunning dress on her, but yes, kind of unimaginative.

Hilty = Baywatch does red carpet.

I think most people who watch Smash think Megan is much better than McPhee. It’s part of what makes it so hate watchable–the show keeps trying to convince us that they are equally matched. Now if only NBC could see how much better Megan is!

    • Annie E
      0

Yep. I think they wrote and planned this show but they realized too late that the reality – that Hilty has “it” and that she’s a stronger performer than McPhee – doesn’t fit with their plan.

Jessica, I’m with you in caring about Megan Hilty. The first hour of the new season is available on Hulu, and watching it reminded me just how good an actress she is. McPhee is fine, but so wooden.

    • Tes

So true, she’s clearly a very talented singer, but i think she’s a even more intresting actress. I think its rare to be able to belt it out, and actully be a emotive actor too.

I’ve found McPhee both dull and unlikable ever since her run on Idol. I couldn’t even bring myself to spend a few minutes skimming the article about her in Lucky at the hairdresser’s, and it sounds like that was a good decision.

  23. Elle

So many thoughts. Hilty looks kind of dull… the prom hair, the lack of jewelry or good makeup. McPhee – she is so, so pretty, and so unlikeable. She falls into Emmy Rossum category for me. Beautiful, great skin, great hair, great figure… and just reeks of smug. Which makes it hard for me to judge her in an unbiased way.
And then there’s Messing… guys, she is wearing the curtains from Ye Olde Boxy Saloon… she literally looks like she’s going to a funeral after a shootout in said saloon, and all she could manage to wrangle up were the heavy, funereal curtains she had hanging up. She’s so pretty, has such great hair (that has been less than great lately?) and she could do SO MUCH BETTER.

Oddly, Boxy & Morose was the name of my alt-folk duo back in college. “Hello [Hipster Coffee Shop], we’re Boxy & Morose. We’d like to start tonight with a new song; ‘Sweaty Topknot, Plastic Shoes.’”

You might remember our one ‘hit,’ “A Bridesmaid in Red (is Still a Bridesmaid).” Probably not, though….

I’m sorry but Messing is a mess in that funeral party toilet roll cover.

I always wanna like Messing – I’m in lust with her face and hair. But what she doees to her body… It’s depressing. Looks like a rare gothic jellyfish ate her real dress and pooped out a tissue box onto her torso. It makes me wanna cry.

  27. Emma

Debra Messing looks monstrous here; the dress is unsalvageable (but I dug the “needs a scarf” comment). Black is very draining on her, and this style and the ruched fabric just adds so much bulk to her frame. Not flattering at all.

I don’t like Katherine McPhee’s look at all, including the high up-do. She’s trying too hard to be the edgy, sexy antithesis of her on-screen personality, and she ends up looking cheap and latex-y.

McPhee’s whole look is atrocious, imo.
