Since the polls are down, I’ll vote via comment. Great face, great body, great actress, great color…terrible fit. And thus, fug. Sigh. So close, Chastain. So close.
I don’t even think it’s close. The only thing I like about this look is the lipstick, which is fantastic. Everything else is a swing and a miss.
I pretty much agree, though I also like the color of the dress. Additionally, I hadn’t noticed until Heather pointed it out, but now I can’t miss the fact that her eyebrows are just about MIA except in close ups.
Concur. How is it that these so-called stylists can take a BEAUTIFUL woman and turn her into someone so ordinary looking? Whoever did that hair should be waterboarded like in the movie… because it was absolutely criminal to send the lovely Ms. Chastain down the red carpet looking like she’s balding. And the same for whoever selected the dress. It looked like something from Forever 21 – an ill-filling prom dress in a color completely wrong for the season. At least her exquisite face and charming personality came through. I just wish that in her acceptance speech she would have acknowledged the woman she portrayed… not that we’ll ever know HER name… but at least mention that she was a phenomenal person to portray.
Yes on the hair!! I was thinking “male pattern baldness” when I saw it!
Her expression when Amy made the joke about James Cameron was priceless. There’s something endearing about her.
I’m with China on this.
I pretty much agree with this. I loved her hair, seriously loved it. And her makeup was such nice classic hollywood. The color of the dress is pretty and compliments her very well. The cut and fit was all kinds of wrong.
How can this even be a question of Fug or Fab? When I saw her– the picture from the third slide– I audibly gasped in horror. It is billowing and puffy and a gazillion kinds of wrong. So poorly fitted. Such a beautiful color, beautiful woman, but my lord, this dress is awful.
She’s so so close here. The color is lovely and unexpected. The folds on the bodice are so beautiful! But so badly positioned! It does weird things to her bustline and who wants that? I agree with the eyebrow pencil. Just a tad as redheads need to be careful there. And the center part. Ugh. NO!! And such pretty hair too. Meg March indeed.
Agreed. And doesn’t it almost look like her hair is a fairer colour towards the parting? I’m sure it’s just an obstacle delusion, I’m not accusing her of having a cheapo colour job, but it’s weird is all.
I agree…it almost looks grey in the center part, especially from a distance. And the dress makes her look like she has really floppy breasts, which I’m sure she doesn’t.
I thought the same thing or even worse: she looks blonder towards the part which almost creates the optical illusion of her hair being quite thin.
I think (almost) everyone is on the same page here re: Chastain. As a (faux) redhead, I know the trials and tribulations of finding a good eyebrow pencil/shadow, but what I wouldn’t give to fill her brows in some more. She has such strong features that I think she could easily pull off a stronger brow, and it may even soften her overall look a bit.
The hair too… she has some of THE MOST enviable locks in Hollywood, and when she turned to the side, the bottom looked cascading and lush. But that part really does make it look like she’s… balding… in that area. And it’s just not the most flattering.
And the dress… it’s… a colour. That’s all I can really say.
It’s so weird that Heather brought up her eyebrows. I saw Zero Dark Thirty yesterday morning, and I was constantly noticing her eyebrows, (because I’m a darker red head and have very light brows and constantly trying to figure it out). Whoever the make up artist on the film was, her brows matched her hair perfectly.
Whoever did her make up for this used that awful taupey brown that doesn’t do anyone any favors.
I liked the dress other than the flaps. They make it look like her boobs are all saggy. She had to be freezing on the red carpet.
She’s one of my new faves, and everyone says she’s just as sweet as can be, so here’s hoping she does better for Oscars.
Anastasia makes a color called “Strawburn.” It is the only brow pencil I have ever found that works for me.
I think poor old Jessica Chastain was Worst Dressed for me last night. It looked terrible up top, and there’s no excuse for walking the red carpet in something so ill-fitting. I’m also not sold on the color.
Yes. The top part is so unflattering.
Me too. This is awful. The halter that starts so low on the back is flattering on almost no one, and the front is baggy.
She was one of my worst dressed also (even my husband hated this and asked why would she wear something that made her boobs look so bad). The color might work on someone with a warmer skin tone, but it doesn’t flatter her. And her hair is awful and does nothing for her even thought she’s so pretty and has great hair.
She looks so much better in her on the street looks in NY than on the red carpet, I really wish she could bring that same sense of style for these events.
Totally agree. The top makes her boobs look saggy and weird.
I thought it made her chest look really saggy, which I know it is not, as I have seen Lawless. But I did think the color was pretty. Did not enjoy the hair, but I’m not sure why. I like the idea, but I think maybe it doesn’t work with her hairline…?
This dress made Jessica look like she had saggy Grandma boobs, which she does not. Not everything needs to be skin tight, but this was not a graceful, drape-y, fit.
I am not usually an eyebrow person, but yes, hers should have been defined.
I love the color, but I hate the fit and I HATE the hair. The hair is a particular shame, because she has such incredible raw materials there.
I hope so, but frankly with the roots and eyebrows it just looks like a hast cheap red dye job that is a week too far down the road.
Love the color, but the fit is terrible! I didn’t like the hair, either. If I could see diamond clips holding it back, maybe, but as is it looks like some sort of slicker gel.
love everything except for the sagging-looking top (your dress should not put “Do your boobs hang low” song in people’s heads)
The bodice was just so weird! Hated this dress, hated the washed out color, also. Who dressed her? She should be fired!
I don’t know how this dress is even being put up for a vote: FUG!
The hair makes it look like she’s balding (which she is not) and the dress makes her look like she has saggy breasts. Terrible.
People were more divided on it last night on Twitter, so we went with a poll. But it was a big no for me.
She got photobombed by a handler or somesuch person, they obviously thought it was a total fug. I totally agree.
Again… terrible hair. Why was there so much terrible hair last night?
This is giving the illusion of saggy boobs which is unfortunate. Love the colour on her though.
Sigh. Another swing and a miss for the lovely and talented Ms. Chastain. Seriously, I love love love her as an actress (that FACE!) and she seems really cool and grounded, especially considering all the attention she’s gotten in the past 2 years. But WHY can she not wear dresses that fit?! These gowns are custom-made. There is no way Calvin couldn’t have fit that bodice better. Not wild about the color either. Seafoam green and redheads do not mix.
The hair makes her look like an alien. (Her hair is SO INCREDIBLY GORGEOUS. Whyyyy?!)
The dress color, the face = gorg! The dress itself?! Ack, no. The top makes her boobs look huge and saggy, which is very unfortunate. Grandma boobs is right. It’s terrible.
I’m totally meh on her hair. The color is amazing, but I didn’t really like the styling last night.
Again, (see Cotillard) this reminds me of my 11 year old self in high fashion mode with a bed sheet and belt.
And I wore my sheet, too – to a toga party, in the late 70′s.
Mine was baby blue, but if I were to dress that way today, I’d need a Queen, not a Twin.
I do like the hairstyle, but that dress is hideous. I don’t think it’d be much better if it did fit.
Not only does the top make her look like her boobs are sagging, but when she went up to get her award & they showed her from the back it made her backside look huge!
If it wasn’t for Sienna Miller, she’d be my worst dressed, too. I would have to call it a tie. Her hair is just so bad – that style makes it look like she’s balding. The dress. Sigh. At least the color was interesting.
Totally agreed on the eyebrows. Husband and I couldn’t agree if they needed to be darker or bigger. Either way, she needs more eyebrow.
i just can’t sign off on that part in her hair. actually, i probably could, because it’s a perfectly straight line to write on.
Jessica, Jessica, Jessica. We called it. We all knew it was going to be almost great. In that sense you didnt disappoint. The color is great and the idea was there but this is a giant fail. Your chest looks droopy and unhappy.
Did anyone else see Guilianna ask her about her boob tape? Keep it classy GiGi. Keep it classy.
The moment I saw this dress I felt sad AND confused. With the exception of her Oscar’s dress last year, I have never seen a red carpet dress that looks good on her. I do not know how you can (so consistently) fail to style a face and body that beautiful.
My initial thoughts when I first saw her were: “Oh, another pregnant actress. Who is she? Oh…that’s not good.”
There is no way, NO WAY, this needs a poll. This is couldn’t be considered good.
I love Chastain, she ‘s a sweetheart. But I can’t in full faith sign off on this dress because of the terrible fit. I know she’s busy doing Broadway 8 shows a week, but she needs her stylist to step it up a pick out a dress that fits her properly before the Oscars.
Such a bummer. The color is so gorgeous, as was her face. But the hair and that bodice = no.
Fug. And the back was even worse. Made her look completely flat.
Saw ZDT this weekend though, and she is amazing
It looks like if she took it off, her tits would hit her knees. Sad, but true.
She looks lovely from the waist down, and I do like the color, the rest? errrr? If the double sided tape sticking your dress to your body is that obvious, it clearly doesn’t fit very well!
Huh. I thought the waist was pretty awful as well, adding a whole lot of unnecessary bulk.
I love the color, but the fit is just atrocious. She always gets so close, but then has one thing go wrong.
No dress in the history of the universe should ever highlight fashion tape as a necessary function of its design. This one does. Therefore, fail. Her hair looks like she rode over here on a motorcyle, got it all wind-whipped and slicked back, and then hairsprayed it into place.
What the hell – I am signing off! The colours – on her lips and garment – are magical.
This is a fug for me. When that hairstyle doesn’t distract from her face, just means she is beyond beautiful.
But the dress???? My Mom used to say: “Doesn’t she own a mirror?”….You would think JC would look at herself from all angles and see that the side view is ‘deflating’……(I had to, lol)
Gorgeous face and pretty color, but the rest, I can’t even. So close, but still so far.
She looks washed out, the hair is terrible, and the bodice makes her look like her boobs have moved way south. Awful – and she’s so pretty!
So terrible. Her part looked like she was balding on TV and then the backside was SO unflattering. It was too high and gave her a long butt and love handles.
Bedsheet macrame is not the same thing as dress design. Who hates this woman so much? And why do they have such a hold over her?
The color was lovely, but as others have noticed, my friends and I all lamented that she showed up with what looked like epically saggy breasts. I would have liked it better if the top had been snugger, showing the silhouette of her true bustline more effectively, but I wasn’t wild about the hair, either.
WHITHER HER EYEBROWS? I could barely pay attention to her acceptance speech because I couldn’t look away from the part of her face where her eyebrows should have been.
If Jennifer Lawrence’s dress gave her boob eyes, this dress gives Chastain granny boobs. Let’s hope things improve by the Oscars.
Not a fan of the hair, looked a little ‘star trekky’ head on. Love love love this colour on her as well as the dress, although it just needed to be tailored slightly.
Can she please just get a new stylist already? Everyone loves her and everyone is pulling for her yet bad clothes happen to her constantly. Girlfriend needs help.
I can’t get past her chin, I really can’t.
No I don’t think that was too harsh. The color of the gown is nice, but the way it fits is very unflattering. I wouldn’t mind the shape of the hair normally, but somehow it makes her look like she has white roots at the middle part. It all could have been much better.
Dress is pretty although appears to be ill fitting. I just can’t with the hair though. Much too severe.
I cannot deal with this hair.
You and my 83-year-old mom, who made many a fine dress back in the days when people still sewed their own clothes, are in complete agreement. This is the one dress she called out in our post-Globes phone call … her take? ‘Maybe it might have been alright if it FIT her…’
Yup — she dressed for the SAG Awards, instead of Golden Globes. #boobeuphamisms
Saddest boobs of all time. Weeping really.
Pretty color, pretty girl, awful cut.
This one looks like Granny Tries to Be Sexy. From the Geriatric Stripper collection.
I’m OK with the eyebrows. People with pale skin and barely visible eyebrows, like me, have to exercise restraint with the pencil or risk looking like the Wicked Witch of the West.
I wanted Jessica Chastain and Rosario Dawson to switch dresses. I feel Jessica’s dress would have looked better on a curvy woman like Rosario, and Rosario’s dress would have looked better on someone a little ‘straighter’ (for lack of a better word) like Jessica.
That peplum frock was doing Ms. Dawson zero favors.
And Ms. Chastain is (seemingly) too classy for such a “Ooops I nearly showed my titts” dress.
The hair is TERRIBLE. It’s like they wanted to do an updated version of a 40′s-do, and all they managed to do was take away the fun.
What’s with her hair? It’s swept back so closely her skull is shining through; not a good look on anyone, but especially not on a redhead. And her pale roots are accentuating it.
Love everything, except the fit of the top part and the lack of brow definition. That color is stunning on her.
Didn’t work for me at all. It just gives her the illusion of massively droopy boobs. And the hair is too severe on someone who already has a very strong face.
Fug of the night. The worst dressed. Agree with all of the above. Her boobs looked saggy, her dress wasn’t well fit, and it looked like she had greying hair when you looked at the part. Limp hair….terrible. She needs to fire her stylist if she has one.
The lady in the background of pic #3 facial expression says it all. Fug.
It really is so close….but so far. When the girls are still up where they’re supposed to be, why would you want to make them look so droopy?
That hair is atrocious!!! Every time she moved the back swung out like a stiff board, just awful. The dress color is beautiful but that’s it.
I read somewhere that Jessica Chastain commented that the dress was supposed to call to mind a cascading waterfall.
Who, on earth, would want their boobs to conjure up a vision of cascading waterfalls?
Tighten up the top fit, and I’d like, but not love, it.
The blousy effect of the top made her breasts look like they were doing yoga — downward-facing dogs.
Her hair and makeup were terrible. That hairstyle made her hair look like it was thinning, and that, combined with the overly harsh makeup, made her look at least 10 years older.
Can’t get behind this. Hair is awful. Dress is awful. But I’m sure she’s wonderful. Better luck next time.
Those are some straight up boob curtains, and the shape is really unflattering on Chastain. Fug all the way- hope she pulls it together at the Oscars!
The silhouette reminds me of dresses worn by my favorite dowager countess.
As a fair-skinnned redhead, let me tell you that brow powder is your friend. I couldn’t figure out why I always looked “different” (in a bad way) in pictures, then figured out that flash completely washed out my eyebrows. I find that pencil is a little harsh with light hair/skin, but the powder (in an auburn shade) is perfect.
And the top . . . I can’t decide if it needs to be hiked up, criss-crossed in the front before it halters, or just redone entirely. It’s a shame because it’s a beautiful color, one of my favorites to wear myself, and no one else was in anything like it.
To me her hair is simply awful. I find it to be really comical and plays a huge part in making me hate this whole thing. When you have such gorgeous hair why would you ruin it like that?
The dress was also a disappointment. If the too was tailored to be MUCH more fitted I think I’d be saying “okay!” instead of “okay…”. This is Calvin Klein whom I normally think of with sleekness not slouchiness!
This is one of those dresses that look great from certain angles and are completely confusing from others! LOVE the front & the back… The sea-foam green is beautiful, the length is perfect and the halter works on her! The top disappoints me from the sides because you can see that her perfectly perky breasts are where they are supposed to be, but it gives the illusion that they’re are between her navel! I love the makeup & jewelry, but I don’t like the stiff hairdo! So, it’s a FAB with reservations for me! I’m so happy for her… Congrats, Chastain, you earned it!
I have a message/gift for all redheads in need of brow definition: MAC Eyebrow Pencil in Strut. There is no substitute for it. If your hair is very light strawberry blond, just go lighter on the pressure when applying, if it’s darker, you can have a heavier hand. I’m a down-home drugstore diva when it comes to makeup, and I love finding deals and saving a buck. In fact, all of my other makeup is drugstore brands, but I’m telling you, that eyebrow pencil changes my whole look regardless of the other makeup I’m wearing. I think it’s either $16 or $18 per pencil, but SO worth it, I use it daily and probably go through 3 a year. Had to share!
I had to come back and thank you for reminding me about Strut. I have that in my back up cosmetics bag, the one with all the stuff I’ve bought and then changed my mind about.
I got it out and that with the Strawburn Anastasia powder I had made a world of difference.
The FUG community not only helps the celebs , we help each other. Win/Win
I’m working on the premise that all the fabric from the back of the gown got moved to the floppy front of the gown.
Not only did it end up looking frumpy and giving her saggy boobs, but the lines it created on her side were just so weird. It was just such an odd slapdash top. It stops abruptly under her arms, like it’s meeting an imaginary seam.
The dress color is wonderful. That’s it.
Haha Susan, precisely!
Almost but not quite. Lots of good elements, colour, great back of dress, pretty good make up. But yes, not so fond of the hair & the style and fit of the dress around her boobs just didn’t do her justice. Awwwa. Great acceptance speech, she comes across as a very intelligent, humble & talented woman.
So close, but NO. The hair is bad. I think the dress looks better in pictures, but on the telecast it made her look so top heavy which she is not. I didn’t think the make-up was great, but you have totally pointed out why. The brows!! The color of the dress is lovely, but everything else is just off.
I think every since you’ve been pointing out how great she looks tailored and classy, I’m going to be holding her red carpet to a higher standard!
FUUUUG. The hair is so very Meg March, but that hardly even registers, since she looks like she’s wearing a set of novelty “old lady” boobs some frat boy tossed out after Halloween. She’s TINY, why would she dress to look saggy, baggy, and unsupported? wtf? Where are her friends
You say “Meg March” like that’s a bad thing…
She is fantastic. Everything done to her is the opposite of fantastic.
When I saw her step out of her limo/suv/suv limo thing I immediately tweet!yelled COLOUR! Because she was wearing one.
And then I saw the whole thing. And my excitement collapsed in on itself just like her boobage area. Sadface.
Well, I hated it. She does that hair a lot and even when it doesn’t look like she’s balding, it’s still not her best look. I think cos she has such a captivating but angular face, she needs the softness of her hair down around it to work in best. And then the dress is just a disaster.
So very close. The color is beautiful on her, and I can see what they were going for with the dress. Unfortunately, the top really does look deflated, and it’s taking her boobs down with it. And don’t ask me about the hair. Just don’t ask me.
She has a naturally ethereal beauty. By putting herself in the wrong hands, she looked 10 years older. Her hair and makeup were probably the most uncomplimentary of the evening. The dress was pure amateur hour – all I could think of was that the front was like a diaper on her breasts and the rear was like an apron! Now if someone on her team is really paying attention to the comments in the blogosphere and not have her play at the Emperor’s New Clothes, she should be a knock out at the Academy Awards.
I don’t get so many things about her: her baffling, meteoric rise, her apparent lack of a personal life, her inability to wear a decent, flattering dress on the red carpet, etc. This dress is virtually the same color as the monstrosity on Rosario Dawson, and while the blue flatters her a little more, it is almost as awful in design. It has a very Star Trek space amazon drape vibe, as if someone in wardrobe fashioned it from some curtain material or something.
Can’t she afford a decent stylist, or at least find one who doesn’t secretly hate her?
What I don’t get is why you are allowed out in society!
The facial expression of the woman in the last picture pretty much sums up my feelings about this dress.
I was just scrolling down to write that exact comment
This tops my worst-dressed list because she did so little with so much. The only thing I liked about this look was the color of the dress. I hated the cut. The crimes it commits against her test should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. And to round out the horror, when she walked off-stage after accepting her award, the back of the dress cut into her skin giving the illusion of back fat – on Jessica Chastain! Add to it the horrendous wind-tunnel hair and I. Just. Can’t.
Here’s hoping her Oscar dress is the antithesis of this let-down.
No no no! She’s such a pretty girl and this whole thing makes her look awful. The hair is awkward and the dress washes her out. I was so sad she wasn’t gorgeous.
I love that this is the most commented post of the Globes. Everyone is obviously rooting for La Chastain and always feels a little disappointed by what she wears. Last year strated out like this as well and then she brought it at the Oscars. Let’s hope at least that happens.
Why would anyone pick a dress that makes it look like their boobs are sagging to their waistline??? I was actually horrified by this when I saw her walk on stage. Someone should have taken her aside on the red carpet, cut the back of the neck strap and then tied it back together TIGHTLY.
Both the designer and stylist should be ashamed of telling this beautiful woman that this dress was a good idea. FUG FUG FUG
This is the actual worst dress at this year’s GGs. I hate it more than I hate Quentin Tarantino.
I finally had to chime in on this. I had high hopes when I saw her sitting in the audience and could only see her from mid-torso up. I actually don’t mind the hair, love the color, etc… Then when I saw her go on stage, it was a fail.
Then, I saw her on the Daily Show on Wednesday and she looked fabulous. Her outfit was great, her make-up and hair looked lovely. Even though she would have been vastly undressed, she should have worn that for the GG. Also, I’d never seen an interview with her but she was utterly charming with Jon Stewart. It makes me root for her all the more for the Oscar red carpet.
