Golden Globes Fab and Fug Carpet: The Sisters Deschanel

well-played

I know Emily just had a baby, but she seems to be bouncing back awfully well. Surely a blue satin bathrobe wasn’t her only option. Couldn’t Miuccia have whipped out something cute and unique for her while they were custom-designing Zooey’s beautiful outfit? Like a two-fer? A Prada party? That can’t have been considered too adorable. I don’t think Zooey Deschanel is allowed to think anything is too adorable anymore. I’m pretty sure FOX put that in her contract.

Thank you, I hated Zooey’s hair. It actually ruined the dress for me it was so bad.

I’m now operating under the theory that she always wears wigs now. Because her hair is so thick in The New Girl…compare that to her hair in Elf, The Good Girl or the Katie Holmes classic Abandon, in all her older stuff she has very fine light brown hair then all the sudden a few years ago she had really thick black hair.

This is an INTRIGUING THEORY. Whoever is making her wigs, they are fantastic.

Yep. Sideburns ruined it all for me. What’s the point of bringing your sister if she isn’t honest with you about how awful your hair is?

I’m obviously the only person on the planet that never put it together that they were sisters. Hate the sideburns!

I feel like if you were to cut off her wig to where the sideburns hit, she’d look like a long-lost Beatle. Or a time-traveling one.

Yeah, sure, the hair is BAD. But I covet that dress. It is stunning.

C’mon – cut Emily some slack. Bones was nominated for neither Diddly nor Squat, so she was obviously there because Zooey wanted a +1. I’m sure it was a softer target to ask Emily about the baby than Zooey about the financial revelations from her divorce filings.

Hate the caftan. Hate the wig, hate the eye makeup. Love the dress. Love the sisters.

I can’t believe Zooey’s dress is getting a “well-played!” It is simply hideous.

Love, love, love the dress. Who knew Prada could do something like this.

I don’t even mind the caftan so much…. it’s the SHOES Emily’s wearing more than anything. Like something an 80 year old lady would wear to church. No.

I like the green dress (but agree with everyone on the hair).

Is Emily wearing the same Bellulah London dress that Kate wore to the “I000 Women” gala event? The one everyone went gaga over? So it’s a “Fab” if the Duchess of Cambridge wears it, but a “fug” if somebody else wears it? Wow, nice to see there’s no bias here. At least Emily works for a living

    • LoriK
      0

I’m not sure that Emily is wearing the same dress that the Duchess of Cambridge wore (it would be rather odd if it was since stylists generally try to avoid that sort of thing), but so what if it is? No dress is universally flattering. Everything looks better on some people than on others. The comments make it very clear that there is no anti-Emily bias. She’s beautiful and people wish she had been wearing a more flattering gown.

Your last comment makes it seem like the one with bias issues is you. You’re totally entitle to that, but you might want to avoid trying to put it off on other people.

    • Jessica
      0

It is absolutely not the same dress. This is custom BCBG. I don’t know to which event of Kate’s you are referring to, but she’s never worn BCBG.

I thought Zooey’s dress was fabulous, perfect for her. The hair tho, uggghhhh. The sideburns (lol) are a fail.
Emily, well….. that dress does her no favors.

I thought the hair, when I saw it on TV, had a Marlo Thomas “That Girl” quality, and I liked it. Maybe it just didn’t photograph well.

Uber-Precious Zooey irritates me like a rock in a boot. Her sister, on the other hand, seems so much less pretentious and invented.

    • LoriK

I pretty much feel the same way. I don’t fault her for be “adorkable”, but I do fault her for being so gawd awful twee all the time. It’s tough to fight one’s own dorkiness, but twee is a choice.

I love Zooey’s dress and I think Emily looks swell. I love that they don’t (overtly) compete with each other. I think Emily’s dress is much nicer than a bathrobe. No wrinkles, no underwear lines, her eyes are gorgeous (as always), good skin …not bad for someone with a newborn.

Bad wig however. Nicole Kidman could give her tips (I think she’s employed short wigs over the year, no?)

  16. Annie E

I thought Zooey’s dress was a tad unflattering in the midsection, though it looks fine here. The hair pretty much ruins the dress for me, though. I think if Emily’s dress had been shorter, with less fabric and better shoes, she would have looked a lot better.

    • Chasmosaur
      0

      Yeah, that was my feeling.

I mean I really wanted to like it, but for all the custom design, I don’t think it fit her well. In all her “adorkable” stuff, she has a waist. This dress denies her of that.

And reaching back far above in the comment thread – I think perhaps she’s wearing a wig, or has really excellent extensions. Looking back, she had nice hair, but not as thick as it has appeared in recent years.

I think people dislike Zooey because she seems like a PR construct . . . There are people who are exceptionally cute, but also seem like grown up women as well, but I think Zooey overly childlike without the women-balance maybe? And she pretends to be alternative when she isn’t, she’s in a Fox show for godsake! Emily’s face actually looked gorgeous, but her dress is hideous. And has Zooey had a nose job? A really well done one? Her nose looks slightly smaller. If the dress was slightly simpler it’d look better though.

Who are these “people” you talk about? I love Zooey!

      • Chasmosaur
        0

It’s not that people dislike Zooey Deschanel – it’s the overwhelming PR in recent months.

For a while, it was like you couldn’t turn on a TV or read a magazine without hearing how “adorkable” she is. Enough – we get it.

Love Zooey. Hate the dress. I made audible noises at my tv when she appeared on the red carpet. She could do so much more.

I love Zooey’s dress (nevermind about the hair and makeup). It looks like a lite-brite, in the best way.

I actually really like Emily’s dress. And her hair, jewelry and makeup look fantastic. That blue is a beautiful colour and best of all, she looks really happy and comfortable!

  21. Cat

I’m sorry, I don’t like either dress. The blue color is stunning on Emily, but I hate the dress. Drapery can hide a multitude of sins, certainly, but I don’t think this is doing her any favors. As for Zooey… I hate the wig with a passion, but I just find the dress a little weird. I don’t like how the beading just cuts off at the waist – it kind of looks like they took two different pieces and mashed them together. I do like the back, though.

  22. Willow

Zooey is so kooky she vomits emeralds.

  23. Daffodil

The bottom of Emily’s dress looks like it’s cut the way you would cut a knee-length wrap dress or some such. It doesn’t drape beautifully, like the bottom of a floor-length gown should. Which just calls more attention to the “I’m heading to church” shoes. Perhaps if the bottom draped nicely, the top would look similarly well-draped and flowy. (Although I would have just chosen another dress myself.)

As for Zooey — I liked it, although I felt bad for her about the wig chops. With so many interchangeable starlets out there in the world, it’s nice to have someone cultivating a different look and vibe and sensibility, whether or not it’s something I would enjoy myself.

Sigourney Weaver would rock the Hell out of Emily Deschanel’s dress.

    • Chanda
      0

Sigourney would have been the perfect choice for this dress! Actually, slap her face over Emily’s, and I’m not sure there would be a lot of difference. I wish Emily, being post-baby, would’ve worn something more like Angelina’s or Natalie Portman’s, if she wanted to hide her (still amazing) body.

No way is that a wig! Wigs almost always look like wigs–even expensive Hollywood wigs. That hair is too shiny and soft looking and has baby fuzz all over. Not a wig.

I was wondering about this… Would she really wear a WIG to the Golden Globes? All I know is that, whatever it is, it’s not good. The dress is kinda cute, though better in pictures than in motion.

I don’t mind Emily’s dress in this picture. It’s a little frumpy but the color is great. It wasn’t until I saw a solo picture of her and realized that the left side is sleeveless that it’s fugliness was revealed in all it’s glory.

Didn’t like Zooey’s dress on TV, but in the photos, it really does look pretty great. Love the back. Like Emily’s too.

Check out some 60′s modeling pics and movies, the sideburns were actually “THE THING TO DO” for a short while in the 60′s. While I’m not a huge fan, its all about a certain vibe for this look and I think Zooey nailed it. It is very “That Girl”. I’m sure someone in about 20 years will look at what we think is awesome and pick the living crap out of it so as far as I’m concerned it’s all good. :o)

When Zooey first came onscreen I screamed “SIDEBURNS!!” at my screen. If she had done a nice, soft updo this look could have been my favourite of the night.

With the Darcy-makers though, this is a fug. Sorry Zooey. You’re still funny on New Girl.

I can’t believe it hasn’t been mentioned yet,. but for me Zooey’s dress is completely ruined by the white stuff round her neck. is that…beading? it looks awkward and out of place. This would have very much been a COVET dress if it weren’t for the white baby vulture neck.

Lord knows I adore the Fug Girls, and this site is my go-to several times a day, but COME ON, Zooey’s dress is THE WORST! My husband walked through the living room while I was watching and said, “Why is she wearing a dress made of Astroturf?” And the HAIR, it’s like she’s on the Sonny & Cher Show- you can reference 1969 without having to go whole hog. I would have loved to see her in something fashion forward and “directional”- and Rooney in something soft and whimsical.

It’s not a wig. In that homemade YouTube video of her and Joseph Gordon-Levitt singing about New Year’s Eve she had the ‘sideburns’, and I want to say her hair was partially pulled back then.

This was tied for my favorite dress of the night (Zooey’s, not Emily’s). However, I think Emily looks so much prettier in the neck up area than Zooey that I wish I could smush Emily’s face on Zooey’s body/dress and see what happens. I feel like that would’ve been the slammiest dunk of the Globes.

I hate everything about Zooey’s look. Well, her hair (fake or not) is very shiny. But that’s it.

Emily actually has a fabulous figure and being post-baby I think that a caftan, while comfortable, is probably noooot the most flattering. And her hair is meh. But I love the color and I love her.

It’s almost as if all bloggers are afraid to criticize the precious Zooey since she became affiliated with Hello Giggles & got a show on FOX. The comment section for this post is where the truth is. I’ve gotta say, I can’t wait for the media backlash.

Zooey looks as a Hairspray character. Would have loved the dress had the brittle somehow gone spread down the dress. Emily’s face looks pretty, but she’s wearing that dress same careless way you wrap a towel around you when you have to leave the bathroom in the middle of the shower. Guess PR’s point was to ‘showcase’ Zooey.

I don’t like Emily’s dress, but she looks GREAT for just having had a baby! I LOVE ZOOEY’S DRESS!!! I think it’s perfect for her and she looks adorable in it! COVET!

I don’t know if I love Zooey’s dress or hate it. She is so adorable though. Emily looks great after having a baby, but the dress is a bit matronly for my tastes. As a package? I loves these sisters!

I love Zooey’s Lite Brite dress, but her handbag clashes. I can’t understand NOT liking it! I think it’s a knee-jerk anti green statement. I did not know they were sisters either, but if my sister and I were going to the same Red Carpet Event (and that happens every other Tuesday, riiiiiight), we’d phone each other and try for more coordinated looks. Emily should have her hair down, and emulate the simple 60′s silhouette. I figure she was just wearing her robe and heading for the closet and got side tracked.

Emily’s dress looks like something she might have worn in her ninth month and just cinched in with a big ol’ belt here. It doesn’t fit her AT ALL. She herself looks amazing. Love Zooey’s dress and hate her hair. There is no way that mop is natural.

Reminds me of the time I tried to cut my own layers into a too-blunt haircut. It wasn’t until I saw a photo of myself that I realised I looked like I’d tried to cut my own layers into a too-blunt haircut.

Am I the only one who didn’t like the dress? The cut is lovely, but the lime green beading is blech.
