Golden Globes Fug or Fab: Jessica Lowndes

fug-or-fab

When I told Heather I was writing about this dress, she was unsurprised. “The neck ruffle!” she said. It’s true: I LOVE a neck ruffle. And ergo, I rather love this:

I’m not entirely sure I am enamored of the color. It doesn’t QUITE wash her out, but it also reminds me both of figure-skating costumes, and bridesmaids’ gowns. Or perhaps, therefore, a figure-skating routine about being a bridesmaid, set to Pachelbel’s Canon and skated in dyed-to-match boots and a head wreath. (Note to self: email Johnny Weir about this idea.) Regardless, I think I’m going to give Jessica Lowndes a hearty thumbs up.

Love the dress, but the makeup makes me want to scrub it all off and start fresh

Love her to death, after Blair Waldorf I think she is the prettiest and most talented CW starlette. I think I dig the dress but the styling is a bit off and I might prefer it floor length and with a better bodice fit, I think I see underboob

The ruff looks like a deflated travel pillow.

The ruffle dips too low – makes her look like she’s wearing a dyed-to-match lei.

Such a pretty dress, love the colour. I bet she felt like a princess in it, I know I would. I just wish she’d chosen better jewellery, the pearls are kind of wrong – maybe a large single black pearl pendant would have worked better?

And the shoes are fab, just not with this dress.

29% yes/29% no/40% I don’t know. This dress has stumped we, the people.

Along that same vein, I love the top but I wish the skirt was a bit slimmer. Ruffly top + pleaty bottom = invisible torso.

While the dress is pretty, the styling makes her look a bit like she was caught playing dress up. The makeup, bangles, and twee rosettes on the shoes say “I’m trying too hard to look like a grown up”.
If she had relaxed a little she could have totally pulled this off

I really like this dress, but not on her. Out it on Charlize Theron instead.

The ruffle is ridiculous and ill-conceived and twee. The color is wrong. The shoes are wrong. The make-up is too heavy. The necklace is fug. The purse is wrong for the dress. I don’t even like the bracelet. And, in the name of all that’s holy, WHY DO THESE STARLETS HAVE TO SHOW SIDEBOOB ALL THE DAMNED TIME? AUGH. She fails. FAILS. I know you love ruffles, but FAIL. FAIL FAIL FAILFAILFAIL.

God, I hate this look. It’s making me feel violent. THIS FUG IS MAKING ME VIOLENT. STOP IT, JESSICA LOWNDES. AND TUCK IN YOUR TITS.

What Sugarkat said except I like the necklace — but not with that dress. The shoes are hideous.

I’m feeling the neck ruffle? Maybe? If it were a different, less bridesmaid-y color. And I feel like a major neck ruffle needs a long skirt to keep from looking like Starlets on Ice.

12. Meghana

I would LOVE it if the neck ruffle were flat in the back.

13. Foo

I think the ruffle is very flattering to her face, she has gorgeous eyes, and I like the shoes. (Usually not a flower on shoe person. I think it’s the antique gold satin color.) I don’t like the necklace with it, but my thumb is definitely angled upward.

Ever seen a cat attack a box of tissues? That’s pretty much what her ruffle(s) look like. It’s too much and the deep v sends a very confusing message. Can’t stand the shoes. However, her loveliness almost transcends the outfit. ALMOST.

15. amy
0

Love the dress (minus the sideboob.) Also love the necklace and shoes, but they should be with something more sophisticated and definitely not with lavender.

And someone needs to come up with a photo-op posing guideline for these starlets. She looks like she’s pausing for the once-over by Mom before leaving the house, but at least she isn’t doing the standard legs-at-bizarre angles .

16. wakeupmaggie
0

eh. I both love and hate the neck ruffle. It’s a little Elizabethan but I like the drape-y effect. Maybe if it didn’t encircle her whole neck…

I do like her makeup with this colour. It keeps her from looking washed out. I don’t get what’s going on with any of her accessories. Does she not have a full length mirror?

Is it just me or does she have a little bit of a Winona Ryder thing happening?

17. Skye

I, also an enthusiastic fan of the neck ruffle, wish simply that:

1) the color was a rich, regal purple instead of this pastel (though then she might have blended with the WB backdrop),
2) her makeup artist had had a lighter hand with the blush AND
3) her bracelet was slightly flashier and bigger, and the necklace was gone (but then would I want the neckline to be slightly less plunge-a-rific? Maybe…).

I’m sorry but is it really still a “neck ruffle” if it ends just above her navel? Also, I just cannot get behind those shoes.

20. Zuzzie
0

I would only change the necklace and take off the rosettes on the shoes, otherwise I think it’s all good. And I think I’ll sit by myself in the ‘I like the sideboob’ camp :)

21. Cecily

Really pretty dress, but noticeable sideboob. And the shoes seem to be winking at me. Change the shoes.

22. TampaBeeAtch

I actually kind of like the dress but am far more enamored of and laughing at the poll. Where I work, when we have to take an official vote on a decision in committee we actually have to do physical thumbs: up, down or sideways. Sideways indicating that the vote doesn’t effect you or your designated area so basically “Whatev”

23. Kestralyn

I like the neck ruffle, and I think if it was less deep it would crowd her neck and face too much. What if we put a panel of the chiffon across the very bottom part of the V so we don’t have quite so much sternum-cleavage but we still have the openness of the ruffle?

24. Rachel
0

I feel that, in order to pull off a neck ruffle that extravagant, that this needs to be floor length. The ruffle is a little overwhelming on a cocktail length dress. It seems to stop too abruptly.

25. Janellionaire

I think I would like this, if the ruff/makeup combo wasn’t reminding me so much of a French clown.

26. MN

The neck ruffle makes it look as though she is a hunchback. It’s horrid.

27. daisyj
0

I’m with Rachel– I think it would look a lot better as a long gown. Also, in a different color. But I actually like the ruffle, especially since it hasn’t gone all limp and pointless, as ruffles tend to do.

28. Sparrow

Too much under/sideboob showing. Otherwise I kind of like it. Maybe a darker colour would be better. Then I would like it more.

29. buttercup

I rather like this. I think any potential for frou-frou was headed off at Cleavage Pass. It’s sweet, but not without an edge to it.

The gold shoes are an interesting choice. Different without being SJP territory. In my fantasyland of this outfit, I wouldn’t mind seeing some slick black hidden-platform pumps to up the edge quotient.

And I agree with someone above that the necklace just wasn’t quite right.

30. kate13

I want to vote Up, because she is so charmingly youthful (is she maybe sporting Invisaligns?) and lovely. But there are just too many little things I want to change: the ruffle is ok but on the wrong dress; the shoes are too fussy; the color is too tepid; and the side-, and in fact under-boob, too…booby. Ruffle + two-strand necklace + hair tendrils = too many things wrapped around her neck. Too much pink stuff on her face. So I say, nice effort, lots of potential, good luck next time.

take that hem to the floor, change the color, and wash her face. Let the ruffle do the work, not all those accessories.

36. Delta Sierra

Whomp up the color, this diluted lavender-heading-for-gray is too wishy-washy for someone with such strong features and such very, very black hair. Make it fit better at the waist. Also lengthen the skirt to the floor, keeping the nice swoopy flared shape, then those comme ci comme ca shoes won’t matter.

37. geemee

The dress looks cheap. The shoes are wrong. The necklace is ugly. The hair and makeup were apparently done in the dark backseat of a limousine. Bad showing overall.

Fluffy horse collar. Nasty big pointy shoes. Wrong necklace. Now, with not so low a decollote’, a small string of pearls, and with a thin black belt and sensible black pumps, she’s off to a cocktail party.

The collar reminds me of when Laura Bennett had to fly back home to NY from Paris after the couture challenge on Runway, and the dress’ collar lost all it’s Elizabethan-like style because it got smooshed and needed a Viagra.

41. Kim
0

The color is pretty, but it’s a bit…something I would have worn at Easter when I was maybe 9 or so. Which makes the low cut of the collar rather disturbing in context. The shoes are very much Easter circa 1988. Bleh. She was actually one of the three Jessicas at this event (Stroup and Szohr being the other two) that made me think they were maybe all the same person, more or less, except for Szohr’s rather fierce bitchface. But anyway, this dress–hike up the collar and you have an outfit my nine-year-old self would kill for. I suppose I’m saying it’s pretty but a mite twee.

42. testington

such a pretty girl, like a less porn star looking version of Megan Fox. The fit just doesn’t seem right, maybe being all the way down to her feet would improve it. A brighter lavender might have also helped.

47. Joey

I like the ruffle, but want to change the color to something, anything, less pastel. Also, if the length is going to be short, she should not wear shoes with ankle straps, makes her legs looks stumpy. I think I could get onboard with the other comments about lengthening the hem. I would also like to send her back to hair and makeup.

48. Lassie
0

What’s wrong with the color?? It’s gorgeous. I’m so tired of nude or red or black. I like the odd colors picked seemingly out of a Crayola crayon box. Though the shoes are ugly, the necklace should have been left home, and the dress should have been long.

49. Ranee
0

I could not agree more with Lassie above. I love the color and think it is just the background colors that make it look faded out. If she had been standing in front of a white or black background, the color would have really stood out on its own.
The necklace and shoes are just wayyyyyyyy too clunky to wear with such a delicate dress. No one should EVER wear t-straps with a ruffled-neck.
So I say, lose the shoes, get something simple, strappy and sexy, lose the necklace and put on a pair of gianormous diamond stud earrings instead.

50. boo

T-strap shoes make even women with slender legs look like they have cankles and these are particularly heinous. And I agree, everything about this dress, from fit to color is wrong.

51. jules
0

Maybe MAYBE if this had been full length, then I could forgive the completely and utterly TWEE color. But seriously? I live in New Orleans, where women still DRESS for occasions and LIVE to wear giant “My Fair Lady” hats. Not even here, not even on Easter Sunday, would this crap fly outside of a cheap bridesmaid dress. Meh and Feh.
A ruffle can only take you so far, and it sure as hell can’t take you ANYWHERE when it is easter egg lavender paired with vampiric matte lips. NO!

52. JanetP
0

She looks like she’s wearing a snuggly scarf around her neck with a light dress that’s surprisingly short to wear with a winter accessory. Fail.

53. jeckie
0

This is beautiful, and I think it’s so nice that they rolled out a real live red carpet for the Beverly Hills Junior High Spring Fling. I also hope little Jessica’s great aunt lets her keep those shoes she loaned her for the night — she looks so grown-up!

54. MEP
0

I can’t believe anyone thinks she looks too thin in this picture! I think she looks great, except the shoes and necklace are awful, and the cleavage is awkward.

55. Mongerel
0

It would benefit her to dress in things that flatter her. This draws attention to her lumpy limbs, limp bustline, long chin, and rotten taste in accessories. She looks deeply silly — from top to toe.

56. La Seditiosa
0

This is the kind of dress I normally wouln’t like, but when I first saw it I thought it looked okay. Not great, and not a dress I would ever wear, but okay. Then I looked some more and noticed how saggy it makes her boobs look, and how very large and droopy that ruffle is. I’d like to see the neckline higher, with less ruffle and a bra. Those plunging V dresses can in theory look great, but the reality is that only a small percentage of us have boobs small enough that we can realistically get away with no bra, and for those who can the deep V highlights their lack of boobs.

I love the ruffle, her dark hair makes the colour viable, but I strongly feel – and you will *rarely* hear me say this – that it needs to be full-length rather than cocktail. I think it’s to balance the bulk of the ruffle. I want to love it! But I feel like she’s wearing a commemorative wreath around her neck and she’s going to topple over with the top-heaviness of it. I can’t think of a joke about what the wreath might be commemorating, which is why I am not a hilarious fashion blogger by trade. Alas.

I like the ruffle–different and surprising can be good! However, when the ruffle stops the viewer’s eye stops traveling vertically and starts to look across her, precisely at widest part of her hips, which are badly draped in fabric to look even wider than necessary. If the ruffle went down further, the eye would keep going up and down vertically.

In addition, the length is bad, especially in that pale color. All you see is washed out pale dress next to washed out pale leg, with kneecaps suddenly becoming an unfortunate focal point. There are no half-measures with a ruffle like this. Take that thing straight down the body, make the dress tight, and embrace it a la Collins. Turban as accessory, anyone?

My home is only 1400 feet away from a 733 foot, 50,000 watt radio tower and another smaller radio tower next to it. In the past, I’ve had problems with my garage door opening with the remote. Now, my new computer is acting up. Sometimes when I start it up it just gets to the desktop and doesn’t load anything. No matter what I click nothing loads or happens. I scanned it with 3 different anti-virus/spyware programs and nothing was found. The room its in has a window facing directly at the towers. I blocked the window with some stuff and the computer works normally so far. Could the electromagnetic radiation be affecting my pc? I’ve had problems with numerous other electronics and r/c toys in the past also. santoramaa

I had been doing laser hair remover applications for over a year at present on my beard. Before then I had a really heavy dark beard. I’m happy with the results. The actual hairs are really thin and I have not gone back for treatment for approximately a few months. Let me say that it did hurt slightly on my top lip and there were definitily occasions where I got a little inflammation on my chin. I like to recommend Ipl to those with thick hairs or have large patches of hair they want to get rid of. For the guys who might like to do their own tough facial beard be prepard to get spots over the following months and many people saying man whats up with your beard.
