Fugs and Pieces, January 21 2012

fugs-and-pieces

First of all, please vote in the Golden Globes Best/Worst poll – the truth will out!

– Also, yes, we have seen the Rachel Bilson Hart of Dixie Funny or Die video. It’s cute! And pretty secretly mean to Mischa Barton, which sort of confirms to me that Josh Schwartz is not a fan of the Barton. (Funny or Die)

– Do you miss Sassy? So do we. Casey over at Good. Food. Stories. scanned and uploaded the archive of their Eat This pages, including an awesome one in which Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon suggests a taco recipe in which you BUTTER the taco. BUTTER. God, we love butter. [Good. Food. Stories.]

– FASCINATORS HAVE BEEN BANNED AT ASCOT! Stop the presses, Ascot has a new dress code. (HuffPo)

Lainey discusses the Michelle Williams GQ story. I kind of can’t believe they talked her into that Maxim-y cover, myself. (Lainey)

An interesting read about Hollywood’s “Power Stylists,” especially in this awards season. (New York Times)

–  Wow, these stills from the Tim Burton Dark Shadows are….interesting. Johnny looks extremely cartoon-y. He also, by the way, is single now! (Celebitchy)

– Vulture spoofed some “For Your Consideration” ads, with hilarious results. (NY Mag)

– A school in Utah has decided not to name its mascot “Cougar,” so as not to offend old ladies on the prowl. No, seriously. (Time)

– Can we interest you in some literature-inspired nail art? I’ve got Bartleby the Scrivener on my fingers right now!! (Flavorwire)

– This is a fascinating article on the Olympics of orchids. (Smithsonian)

–  I am really over the “Sh*t ___ Say” thing, but “Sh*t Dowager Countesses Say” feels like a nice capper to the trend. She is divine. (Vulture)

Hello? Is it me you’re looking for….in other movie clips? This is pretty awesome. (Vimeo)

Note: It is Scrivener, not Schrivner, but that Hart of Dixie thing made me cackle out loud in a public space, so thank you for that.

“Butter the taco” sounds… well… kinda dirty. Thanks for making me laugh this Friday afternoon.

I’m in awe of how much you’ve crammed in here since the Globes! Crammed in in a good way! Dresses, jewelry, bags, shoes, all of it. Great pictures, great commentary (never cruel), great posters, great site. Congrats!

Thank you for the great commentary this week! I know it’s a lot of work for you both, but I always appreciate your insights in the week following a major awards show.

And yeah, we need to discuss Michelle Williams’ interview in GQ. I just don’t get how it happened (although I like Lainey’s take on it).

Even if I’m old now, I am so glad that I grew up with Sassy instead of Teen Vogue and Twilight.

What if I found a way to do Sassy-inspired nail art? Would all worlds collide?

Actually, the story about the Utah school is only half of the story. It’s true that some parents didn’t want their daughters on the “cougar” drill team or cheer squad for the reasons stated. But the bigger factor in “cougar” being rejected as a mascot is the school’s geographic location–right between the University of Utah (Utes) and Brigham Young University (Cougars). The school board didn’t want to be perceived as favoring one university over the other. But that’s not nearly as good a story as the one Time ran.

As always, Fugs and Pieces has links that bring a smile to my face. That last one was a HOOT. Thanks so much for linking to it.

Holy sh*t, did I just hear Giuliana Rancic says of Nicole Kidman on the 2012 Golden Globes red carpet, that she thinks Nicole would have looked BETTER if her hair was BLONDER and Nicole had darker skin? How did Giuliana get that job?

Have we already discussed this? Sorry, if I’m late to the party.

OMG, I didn’t think that I could love Rachel Bilson any more than I already do, but that Funny or Die video made fall in love with her! It’s soooooooo funny!!! And, how awesomely hot & hilarious are Hot Neighbor Wade and Jason Street? I LOVE THEM! Thank you for the link!

thanks for these! RE: Michelle…. I thought it strange that she posed as MARILYN for her GQ story, even though the article was about her own life/journey.

Not sure if I can post links here… but I thought you would enjoy the trailer for Miss Representation. Really goes along with the “feminist rants” that we all enthusiastically support.

Looks like the Ascot ban is only on headpieces with a base diameter of less than 4″. Most of the awesome (read: ridiculous) fascinators I’ve seen are safe – yay for crazy hats!
