First and foremost: TODAY IS HEATHER’S BIRTHDAY! HAPPY BIRTHDAY HEATHER! I got you all these things to read:

– This is a lovely story about a community of nuns that also happens to be releasing an album. I find nuns very interesting. (NPR)

– You probably want to see Prince William giving a side-eye to a falcon. (Socialite Life)

– Or revisit some of these Kate Middleton looks. (Socialite Life)

– The wonderful Alamo Drafthouse in Austin has a new pre-film informercial in which Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller discuss what will happen if you text during the movie.Watch the whole thing. It’s worth it. (Vulture)

– Sandra Oh is leaving Grey’s Anatomy and we’re all unhappy about this turn of events. Pajiba does a great job explaining why Cristina Yang is the best. I mean, I think we can all agree that the one true couple we’re all really invested in on that show — if you, like me and Heather, are still watching it despite yourselves — is Cristina and Meredith. They do platonic love on that show so much better than romantic. (Pajiba)

– You’ve surely read some of the commotion surrounding the launch of Bustle — you guys, it’s a website for ladies! Because we don’t HAVE any! — but this was one of the smartest takes on what went wrong. (Flavorwire)

– Apparently, Gwyneth Paltrow was irritating in the Hamptons over the weekend. Color me stunned. (Lainey Gossip)

Fashion inspired by kick-ass lady heroines. In case you woke up this morning wondering where you could get oxblood Buffy pants or giant awesome Foxy Brown earrings, which, let’s be honest: you probably did. (Who What Wear)

The 90s are back. (Elle)

– The Huntington Library in San Marino, where I spent many an afternoon as a youth, found some cake. Some really old cake. Some REALLY OLD CAKE. Want a piece? (And an update on what they’re doing with it, and another places that also have ancient foodstuffs.) (The Huntington Tumblr)

– This dates from the beginning of summer and I was wrong not to bring it to you then: Famous People Wearing Sunglasses (hilariously, this slideshow refers to Phil Spector as “very cool music producer Phil Spector.” Um, and batshit crazy MURDERER, you guys). (Harper’s Bazaar)

– The folks at Previously.TV imagine what we may read in Jason Priestley’s upcoming memoirs. (Previously.TV)

Here’s Benedict Cumberbatch’s Vogue spread, because I know what you like. (Celebitchy)

– This dude in Japan made over 20,000 prank calls to the Japanese 911 before they came over to his convenience store and arrested him. (Time)

Happy birthday, Heather! I will now never be able to forget your birthday, because it’s my wedding anniversary. Champagne for everyone in Fug Nation–put it on my tab!

  2. MizWeirdo

Am I the only one who, upon reading the bullet item about the Really Old Cake, immediately thought of that one Seinfeld episode? You know the one.

That in fact was the quote I put on my FB when I posted this there. “Do you know what happens to buttercream frosting after it’s been stored in a drafty English basement for 40 years, Elaine?”

    •  HelenBackAgain

Yup! Elaine Benes is who wants a bite…

      Happy Birthday, Heather!

I <3<3<3 the Alamo! Shailene and Miles are good, but no one will ever be as good as Ann Richards: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUqLWTQCeHM

Benedict Cumberbatch! He can GET IT!

    •  jerkygirl

OH. MY. THAT PICTURE. IN THE GREEN SHIRT. IT. . .OH MY. It’s all I can think of to say *mind blown*

      Happy birthday Heather!!!

    • Annie E

Uh, yeah. Seriously. But what is up with Vogue using green screens for everything now? They did it with Claire Danes on the cover and that photo of Cumberbatch “in the street”…

    • Elle

Benedict Cumberbatch is a beautiful man, but there is just way too much Photoshop going on in those Vogue pictures.

  5. Franziska

A very happy birthday to you, Heather! Hope you are celebrating with good friends, good presents ;-) good cake and good champagne!

  6. S

Following a link on the falcon page – LOOK! Squee! Baby Wills!

  7. Amoki

Happy birthday Heather!!! I wish you lots and lots of laughing and cake (and diet coke).

  8. Meghan

Love the wedding cake link! The last museum I worked at had a whole top tier, decorated with sugar flowers and kept under a glass globe. It was from about 1880. And the museum where I work now has a jug of legit prohibition-era moonshine. I smelled it, and somehow, it did not set my nose on fire.

    • Sajorina

Oh, how cool! I study Museology and can’t wait to work at an Art Museum! I guess you work at a History Museum!

    • Berry

My husband once worked in a museum that got a donation from a local drug store. This was a place that had been in business for like a 150 years, and they gave the museum some of the old timey apothecary things, like big brown and green class bottles and scales and so on (no apothecary table though). But also included in the loot: a sort of wrap from 20′s that was supposedly a little radioactive. It was meant to be used to alleviate aches and pains. And even better, two ampules of morphine. They talked publicly about that part of the donation, because who wants junkies breaking into a museum to steal drugs? But you people don’t know where I live, so it’s alright.

    Happy Birthday, Heather!!

  10. Annie E

Buffy made me not only want to wear oxblood leather pants, but also gave me a hankering for some backless shirts.

    Happy Birthday Heather!

  12. Sajorina

    Dear Heather,

    Happy Birthday!
    ¡Feliz Cumpleaños!
    Joyeux Anniversaire!
    Buon Compleanno!

I hope you enjoy your day! Luv ya!!!

  13. Carol

Happy birthday Heather!! Enjoy your birthday weekend :)

Thanks for the Cumby links, dears. I’m so happy :)
And uh….oh geez….the 90s. I can’t do the 90s again, I didn’t do it that well the first time!! Ha!
Although I am getting Doc Martens this time! I don’t care what my mum says! LOL

  14. Shrimp

Hi yi yiiiiiiiii, the Cumberbatch photos. My goodness me.
If he wasnt such a stinking sweetie, I wouldn’t find him attractive. But he IS a sweetie, so . . . dang.

  15. Berry

Happy belated birthday, Heather. Or at least belated from were I am. It’s already tomorrow here. It might still be yesterday there, I don’t know. Time zones are confusing.

The heroine chick (see what I did there) slideshow was awesome, but missing one very important magical know-it-all, namely Hermione Granger. I will always love Hermione, and the girl can rock a tie.

    • Berry

And of course I meant chic, not chick. See, this is what happens when people have to work on a Saturday. They spent their time nattering on in the net, and can’t even get their jokes quite right.

  17. Bridget

That’s not a falcon with Prince William. That’s a Common Buzzard.

  18. TonyG

Happy birthday Heather! You’ve given me so many smiles and guffaws over the years, and the only thing I got you was this birthday wish!

    Wish it could be more.

    Wait…that’s just another wish.

Oh well, next year, the wish will be even better.

  19. Rachael

I’m sure he’s a nice man, but Cumberbatch just doesn’t do it for me. I feel like I’m the only one. He reminds me of an alien. (I’m sure he’s just totally broken up about that…)

Happy belated birthday Heather. Hope it was an awesome one!

    • HKS

I agree. He doesn’t really do it for me either — but I do think it’s because I only know him as Khan from Star Trek. I never watched Sherlock (I know! I’m sorry! I will!), and I think that’s where people really get his hotness. (Is it? Or is it something else, I don’t really know what he’s in).

He DOES have nice eyes though. I will give him that.
