Wow. Words fail me as well. And I am in 100% agreement — those are the ugliest shoes I have ever seen in my life. And I’ve seen some ugly shoes…

Why do people with so much money have such horrible roots all of the time? It kills me. You could have a colorist come to your house girl! Fix those roots!

PS – The entire outfit is made of NO

    • Kat
      0

The color she dyes her hair is horrible, too! It’s such an unnatural yellow, and just doesn’t suit her cool, pale skin. And her eyebrows are way darker than her hair, which is just ridiculous looking.

Dakota looks fine with the dark hair, but I definitely prefer her natural color. I’m sure she’s just trying to look more grown up though, and as a 25 year old who looks 16, I sure can’t fault her for that! But dear lord, she needs to take Elle under her wing. Or at least sneak into her closet and burn all her clothes.

You’re right, that shade of blonde makes her look very pink and sickly.

        • Annie E
          0

I don’t think she dyes her hair, or it would probably BE a better shade. I think those roots are due partly to a trick of the light and partly to the fact that some people just have darker roots naturally.

        • Kat
          0

Annie E., no way that is her natural hair color. I know there are lots of different shades of blonde (I AM blonde, so really, I do know), but that color does not occur in nature.

        0

i think the dark hair on dakota actually makes you realise that her face is really blandly doll-like and not that striking or beautiful….

with blonde hair i think her face looks doll-like in a good way.

I think Dakota’s dress is stunning on her. That teal works beautifully against her creamy skin. Even the sheer side panel doesn’t bother me since it’s neither too obvious nor does it reveal any unmentionable parts of her anatomy.

Elle…I can’t even go there. She’s 14. But those shoes need to be burned, IMMEDIATELY.

Elle’s shoes are BEYOND “words”. But, she’s what, 16 or something? I give her a total pass.

Dakota looks amazing as a brunette and great in that dress!

I also loved the shoe description, and thought it was hilariously on-the-nose. But those, I can understand, for a kid playing with fashion.

What’s bothering me is the dress: backlessness, and that it’s a mini with a crotch-high thigh slit. On a fourteen-year-old. Are there no parents?

It would probably look great on Jennifer Lopez, for whose age this would be appropriate.

Elle’s appearance is so try-hard hideous,
from the skid-mark roots and overprocessed too long too straight scarecrow hair,
to the washed out geometric non-fitting satin fabric samples she has pinned to her,
to the dog-collared peppermint candy craft project on her feet.
    This is stunningly NO.

Dakota looks dishy as a brunette!

    • Annie E
      0

I don’t think it’s try-hard at all, just a 14-year-old experimenting with fashion. It’s still hideous, but also fun.

Dakota’s dress is gorgeous. She looks beautiful with the dark hair (for a film role, I read elsewhere) — though I’m not sure I would have recognized her with it, and I prefer her with her usual blonde. (See also: Emma Stone, better as a redhead.)

Elle’s lopsided skirt and… I guess we’re going with “shoes” for those things on her feet? Awful.

Oh god, those shoes. I am actually grossed out by them.

She’s a kid, and playing around with strange footwear is not the worst thing in the world. At least let’s give her some credit for not going all teen slut-tastic. Dakota’s hair color looks fantastic, so much more flattering than the yellow. Hope she keeps it that way.

  15. Amy

I think the brunette color is TERRIBLE on Dakota. Some people are just suppose to be blonde. See also: Ashley Tisdale and Amanda Seyfried.

Dakota is brunette thanks to filming Night Moves for the last month. While the dress is very nice on her, I don’t like the vampire makeup she has on. Why not go with her natural skin color, instead of a pasty white. The dark hair makes her face fuller though. It just does not completely work. The body fine, the neck up bad.

    • Rachael

I find this hysterical because Nite Moves is the name of a strip club near where I live.

She might have worn the shoes to help us forget how fugly her dress and hair color are. But, yes, these are quite actually the ugliest footwear I’ve ever seen. And probably very, very expensive.

Elle- Someone forgot to finish making her dress.

Is it weird that I am more annoyed by her lack of a good pedicure than the shoes? I don’t like naked toenails.

Exactly!! I wondered if anyone else had noticed!

why in the world would you not slap on at least some clear nail polish for a huge movie premiere ESPECIALLY if you know people are going to be looking at those freaky shoes!?

THANK YOU! i scrolled through these comments to make sure i wasn’t alone. phew.

at first i was going to give her 14 year-old self a break. but that means she is a freshman in high school. you can bet your fanny that i was painting my toes then.

i mean, she could have even painted them red to match the stripe on the shoes or something. sigh. nothing would save those shoes.

Dakota looks terrific, to me. It’s maybe a little mature for her, at just 18, but I think it’s a pretty dress, and flattering (and YES, the color!). And I like the dark hair contrasting with her pretty light eyes. It does call for a makeup adjustment, but otherwise I’m a little sorry it’s unlikely she’ll keep this color.

Elle – well, she’s a minor. So my question is, how is it she was allowed to leave the house like that?

  23. tammy
    0

granted, it’s hideous, but when i was her age i would have wanted to “express” myself just like that. “look at me, i’m all fashiony and stuff”. so i can’t be too hard on her. and dakota is dressed like a 40 year old soap star.

  24. amanderpanderer

It’s like her shoes are wearing shoes, but the shoes her shoes are wearing are actually better than the shoes she’s wearing.
(And yes, I see “tiny sumo” as a theme here too.)

Those are “The Cruel Shoes”. They are so freaking fugly that there are not WORDS ENOUGH to describe how fugly they are. At least she won’t get bunions wearing them.

  27. Kat

I’m pretty sure that even though we’re all used to her as a blonde, Dakota’s natural colour by now is pretty similar to this brunette colour, judging by the dark roots she always had (similar to Elle’s here!). I’ve been wanting her to go brunette for aaaages as I thought it would look so stunning with her pale skin, and more natural – I have to admit I’m not loving it as much as I thought I would, but I think it’s just that the makeup and styling that haven’t quite settled down yet – I think it could look gorgeous.

As for Elle, yes the shoes are hideous, but she’s 14, quirky and charming, and I’d rather she dressed like this than go all slutty Disney starlet, you know?

  28. Stefanie

agreed. if i was 14, i’d be wearing the same thing.

    • snuffy
      0

I agree! The shoes look ugly to me now, but if you filled in the platforms and replaced the pretty ribbon-style straps with a giant elastic band they would pretty much be the same as the fugly Spice Girls sandals we all wore when I was 14, so I really can’t fault her. At least hers are Prada! Mine were just horrible :)

I’ve been waiting all day for the Elle shoe comments. Those things are truly the most hideous things I’ve ever seen strapped on feet. Wow. I don’t care if she is only 14, she still has eyes. I think.

  31. snuffy
    0

I still like them better than KK’s pearly sweater heels!

  32. jean
    0

But her feet look so pretty in them! I don’t think they’re the worst shoes I’ve ever seen. I think some of those super high lobster claw shoes that weren’t functional as, you know, shoes, were worse.

And I would kill for her pretty feet. The dress is a bit revealing for a 14 year old, but she’s so willowy still that I don’t think it looks all the bad. And the top seems to have some built in support. The slit concerns me. How did she manage sitting down? That would have been a challenge for my 14 year old self.

So, I’m a longtime Fanning Sisters critic. Sure, I can appreciate their talent and their artistic sensibilities. And also, yes, they typically keep it classy. And from all accounts, they are well-mannered, upstanding girls. And I like that they want to take risks, sartorially. Yes, kudos, kudos, kudos.

That said, I think many Fug Nationals give them passes based on the foregoing, without really objectively judging the clothes. Which is fine. We all have our favorites that blind us a bit to reality. I do it, too. But not with the Fannings. Anyway, Elle’s dress and shoes are made of fug, but it’s not surprising to me…look at what she’s been rocking lately. Dakota looks a lot better as a brunette, but only as compared to the wrong shades of blonde that she often sports (like Elle). Anyway, I like her dress actually. So, total fab for Dakota, but that’s on a relative scale.

Oh, we’re guilty as hell of overlooking fashion sins on people we love around here. Freely admitted.

      • pantsonfire

Yep. Not exactly a controversial statement. Was just pointing out that that is what is going on here, and what goes on a lot with the Fannings on GFY. As I have in the past, I will continue to play the role of the person pointing out that the empresses have hideous clothes…

  34. Tiffany

I think Elle’s dress is so awful. The construction is just hideous. What is that white fabric that is peaking out from the flaps in the skirt area? In all honesty, I could have made a better dress in my 8th grade home ec class. It looks like it is going to fall apart before she gets through the night. I fear that Elle has entered that fashion club that likes things that are weird simply for the sake of being weird (or getting attention perhaps?). I am all about pushing the fashion boundaries and applaud risk takers, but there is no excuse for shoddy construction on the red carpet. KStews dress is at least well made even if you think it looks ugly.

  35. Billie
    0

Yeah, those shoes are totally cray, but I kinda love her for wearing that outfit, including the hideous shoes. She just seems like a normal teenage girl, experimenting and having fun with fashion.

Dakota looks pretty fab, I think.

  36. Evalyn
    0

    Ok, the shoes, yeah.
Howsomever: these are lovely, talented, unusually normal and stable sisters. They are also in a highly competitive field, and at a time in their lives where they are searching for identity and individuality. Those shoes are not the end of the world. I would wear Elle’s dress in a heartbeat and a different color (imagine it in black?). Dakota’s hair is lovely (it’s hair, people. It can be colored and cut and it will grow back. Chill.) The color of the dress is lovley even if it looks a bit flapperish. Let them be. Let them grow. Let them develop. We already have Mary Kate and Ashley – we don’t need another set of twisted sisters.

    • pantsonfire

I don’t think anyone was freaking out about Dakota’s hair–just voicing opinions on whether they thought it was more or less flattering than other shades she’s tried.

I don’t think anyone is picking on them or freaking out about their outfits here…it’s a fashion critiquing website, and they put together some looks and went out on the red carpet and did their thing. If folks think they are too young to be featured here, then that’s one thing. But I don’t see why they shouldn’t be critiqued (with all due respect) as any other celebrity that shows up on GFY.

Well I’d say the Twifug gang is going out with a bang. Naked dresses, Lego shoes, all RPats needs to do is sew questions marks on his suit and he’s the Riddler.

I’m biased, but we got thru eight Harry Potter movie premieres with absolutely none of this tomfoolery, and at least four or five of those premieres were attended by HBIC herself.

She puts these rank amateurs to shame without lifting a finger, or wand, as it were.

AAAAHHHH! My eyes! Those shoes are so fug, I don’t even know where to start. And just in case you may have thought there’s no way they could get any MORE fug, look at how they were shown on the runway – WITH RUBBER SOCKS! – there are no words. Dakota looks so pretty – dress and hair. Except for that side view…

I’m inclined to cut Elle some slack. On the one hand – she’s 14 and seems interesting and cool and not letting body parts totally hang out…on the other hand, I’m sort of disturbed that her childhood may have disappeared forever and I hope she turns out well because I worry about The Children. But, it’s a fashion miss, but A for being 14 and pushing boundaries.

I feel like if Elle was wearing heals instead of those awkward (I’m being generous) shoes, that dress might not looks so diaper like. Also, I am not sure those shoes are 100% objectively ugly. Like possibly they could work on a taller actress who was wearing a full length dress or wide leg pants of some kind. Never would anyone call them stunning but I do think there is a situation in which they don’t need to be a complete trainwreck.

Also I personally am not a big fan of brunette Dakota. Yes, it helps her differentiate herself from her sister, but I don’t find it flattering to her coloring. Maybe a lighter brown would have been more effective. She just looks a tad washed out to me.
