Fugs and Fabs: The Game of Thrones cast at ComicCon

This makes me want someone to write a comic strip about Helena Bonham Carter. And I would read the hell out of it, but I wouldn’t WEAR it.

*adjusts nerd glasses* Um, Heather, the Force is capitalized. /stereotypical annoyed-nerd voice.

Oh, also, that dress Natalie Dormer is wearing in slide 8 makes her look 15-20 years older than she actually is.

Oh God… I was thinking that too, about force/Force. I’m glad you posted about it, so I don’t feel so alone in my godawful nerdiness.

I was wondering if we were going to talk about this dress. If someone made the a-ha “Take on Me” music video into a dress this is basically what it would look like.

    •  ElizabethT
      +20

That was the best music video ever. Almost thirty years ago, so close to twice as old as Maisie Williams. She is adorable. There are some Instagrams of her going incognito in the candy-striper overalls by wearing a Spiderman mask.

I don’t care what anyone says, I love this dress on Maisie! It’s event appropriate and she’s young and sassy enough to pull it off. If, however, as she ages she continues to venture to deep into Helena Bonham-Carter red carpet territory I will be very very sad.

Seems to me after those slides alone, Maisie might be a usurper to the HBC throne. Not sure if anyone can out-kook Helena, but Maisie just might be the young whippersnapper to do it.

          +12

How great would an HBC-Maisie movie be? Maybe Maisie is her strong-willed daughter (in a British country house in the 30s with romantical problems? And without this dress?)

For senior portraits, it’s kind of a trendy thing to create a dress out of newspaper or wrapping paper, tulle, and duct tape. It looks like that’s what was done here, maybe as a contest for some superfan of GoT(?) (I mean, it’d be a little creepy to have some guy draping her with paper and stuff, but maybe a girl teen mag type thing)

      I dunno. Anyhow, that’s what I’d call this: a senior portrait make-a-dress.

I would guess I’m in the minority in liking Gwendoline’s pale pink Pilotto. I like that and her blue & white halter dress.

As to Maisie at the Lacoste thing…girl, no. Wearing your bathrobe (or what looks like one) over jammies to a store opening is just not the way to go, even if you are a rebellious teen.

It reminds me of the pictures of the aftermath of a tornado where a tin roof from a building miles away ends up wrapped weirdly around the telephone pole in front of your house.

“Tonight on Project Runway, your challenge will be to make an outfit for our special guest, Maisie Williams, to wear to Comic-Con. For materials, we have provided these old paint-stained tarps, and some odd bits of trim that were lying around the workroom. Get to it, people!”

I think Ms. Maisie is angling for a Fug Madness spot.

While yes Maisie’s recycled comic book dress is totally bonkers I love her creativity and that she seems to really embrace experimenting with fashion in a way only teenagers can.

Overall this was a good showing by the GOT ladies, very colorful and event appropriate.

I think Maisie is still trying to figure out her style… from HBC impersonator, to simple and chic and grunge toddler…. got to love her!!! it’s ok kid, you are young, just have fun!!!!

I might love Maisie Williams. Girl is NOT afraid to roll out the crack balls and I’ve been missing Bai Ling’s contributions to the crackitude.

    •  julyol1972

Perfectly said! Plus, she looks like she’s enjoying every minute of the crackitude, and that fun aspect is always a welcome change.

Nothing gets you into the fug madness slot faster than thinking we the unwashed masses are green with envy over your ugly, wacky, desperate/try hard fashion failures. I’m looking at you Rita Ora!

I love the expressions on the faces of the people in the left background of the slide at the Lacoste store opening. On my screen, the woman seems to have red eyes – as though the sight of Maisie’s ensemble has dislodged something in her brain.

I agree! The man wearing glasses behind her is looking like he watching a building explode… he wants to do something about what he sees, but he knows it is just too dangerous.

Gwendoline’s tie-dye inspired dress is lovely! I’m torn between her and Natalie Dormer for best dressed in that group shot.
    Overall, loving the colorful get-ups

All Gwendoline Christie needs is a grate blowing some lovely warmish air to stand over! That dress for the group shot — that whole look — is just so gorgeously Marilyn!

Make that a stronger, more confident yet every inch as sexy Marilyn!

In Slide 3? I love that on Christie, too, and the shoes. I’m not so sure about the hair… conceptually, it makes sense, but in reality, I think she looks her ideal best with a little forehead-softening effect in her hairstyle. But that is the TINIEST of nits to pick. It’s a great look and she looks fabulous in it!

        +6

Addendum: I rather like the Box O’Nerds outfit, too. I agree with Heather that it doesn’t flatter the way the dress did, but it’s cute, the colors work for her, and she looks comfortable and happy in it!

Agreed – and BOTH of these dresses fit her and are LONG ENOUGH! Victory In Our Time!

Everyone’s hair at the GOT panel was amazing. Natalie had a little braid along the line of the part of her hair that is shaved, Sophie had braids that made her hair look like Natalie’s, Gwen went bombshell. But I was mesmerized by Rose Leslie’s braid. It made me very jealous that I don’t have thick, wavy, red hair (I have fine, poker straight, black hair).

There is nothing remotely flattering about Maisie’s dress in slide 1. It’s extraordinarily stumpifying, hideous and looks like it’s made out of used garbage bags. It also makes her look about 3 feet tall. This one is a big NO for me, maybe even a honey, no, what? Why?

    • evilamy
      +7

I have to agree. I don’t mind the dress in itself, but she’s so petite that it appears to be eating her alive. I say this in love: I’m 5’1″, and that dress would look like it was attempting to eat me.

I actually like the candy stripe overalls on her. They are whimsical and fun…just maybe with a cami or baby tee instead of what looks like a sports bra? Extra points if the baby tee and shoes are turquoise? Or maybe I am insane and should never be allowed to dress myself?

      •  HelenBackAgain
        +3

Totally agree with your changes to the candy-striper overalls! Turquoise baby tee and shoes would be perfect with those. What is she, like, sixteen? I think she can get away with it!

          +1

Agree. I’m going to give Maisie the She’s Young pass on all of these. If you can’t experiment with cracked-out sartorial choices when you’re a teen, then when the hell can you???

  11. Marnie

Maisie and Gwendolyn should stand next to each other more often. And right now, someone tragically hip and twee is naming their twin girls Maisie and Gwendolyn.

    • Rachael
      +12

Well, at least they’re nice names.

I’m not even mad at Maisie, here. She looks like she’s enjoying the hell out of her crazy outfits. So, if you’re going to go nuts, I say go full on bonkers and enjoy it. At least she’s a teenager. When she looks back, she can shrug and pass it off as youthful crazyness. I know I do!

my daughter is Gwendolyn–to be fair it’s after the character in Importance of Being Earnest. (just with a y instead of an e). I wouldn’t mind a few more Gwen’s around.

I feel you, Jen. I’m an apostrophe Nazi. I have been known to walk out of a place of business (a PROFESSIONAL PLACE OF COMMERCE) because they don’t understand how to use apostrophes properly. It’s extreme, but I do it because it bothers me that much! I’m really odd that way

Judging from what I’ve seen of Maisie Williams on social media, there’s a very real possibility that she’s just screwing with all of us.

  13.  Hannah
    +1

I feel like this is missing the forest for the trees, but honestly it is the fringe on the hem of the comic book dress that ruins it for me.

Not that the shoes are good on any level either, but still FRINGE NO.

  14. Del C

i think i might love Maisie’s dress if it was just the Prince of Tennis all over. it’s the colored “overdress” that’s embiggening her because its shape is awful.

  15.  AMP

I dunno, you guys– I really like Maisie’s dress. Ok, well, maybe not objectively *like*, but in this context? It’s pretty great. And apparently some of the comics are Sandman! http://jezebel.com/behold-maisie-williamss-comic-con-comic-book-dress-1612473638

    •  Anita
      +5

I’m with you. The dress is fine and fun in context (and given her youth) and I absolutely love the fabrics. No, I’m not kidding. If it’s graphic and/or architectural, I’ll probably have at least an appreciation of it, if not outright love it.

  16. jenelope
    +13

Maisie’s comic book dress is made from recycled graphic novels. She first wore it to judge a fashion show at a book store where the dresses were all made from book pages. I don’t love the design (especially the fringe), but I do love that she is embracing the spirit of both the fashion show and SDCC.

Why does Gwendoline Christie look like tie-dyed Marilyn Monroe in that group pic?

    • Joanie
      +4

See, that explains it! I knew it was made of paper. I’ve only done about 50 shoots with these things.

    • Beth C.
      +2

If that’s the case, then I love it. I liked it in a “well, it’s Comic-con, so shoot, go for it!” way already, but if it was totally event-specific as well? 100% sold.

While I get how adorably on-message Masie’s dress is, I think there must have been a way to construct it or style it – or at least pat down that lump in the front — so it would be more dress-like and cute, and less like an actual sheet of newsprint tied in the center with a string. Because no matter what the theme is, it is still a dress.

Gwendolyn’s Peter Pilotto reminds me of the potato print projects from summer camp.

Maisie’s dress is fully cracktackular, but I’m not even mad because the first thing I thought when I saw the picture was “Wow, look how pretty little Arya Stark is!” Her face registered way before the dress did.

Regardless of the whacky outfits, Maisie’s face looked fab, hair too.

Natalie in the boxy dress- from the thumbnail I got a real Jenna Maroney vibe for some reason.

Maisie is in her teens. Moreover, she has been playing for the last few years a very tough kid in very dire straits, where she cannot smile or laugh (unless it’s hysterical – see a few episodes back in Season 4). More than moreover, she is British and she has quite a few style icons to adore.
All in all: I think it’s a great outfit, at the right place and occasion, and the right age. And she seems to thoroughly enjoy herself which is the most important factor of all.

    •  Kristabelle

That (her laughing hysterically) was my favorite part of the whole season, I think!!!

Maisie’s dress looks like two plastic tablescloths trimmed with fringe haphazardly belted together. That said, it’s not totally heinous, we’ve all seen a lot worse here on GFY.

At least you answered the question I had when I first saw the dress in Photo #1 somewhere else this morning: What’s a Maisie Williams? (By which you will know that I am NOT a GoT fan.)

I could get behind a dress with a manga/comic book print, but this looks like wrapping paper…

    • Agent Sculder
      +8

The dress is actually made from recycled comics, so it literally is made of paper! It is crackballs, but Maisie picked the perfect event to wear it to. And heck, if you removed the colored portion, I actually think the dress would look great on her. It’s just that dress is too much bulk for her little frame. Her co-star Gwendlolyn Christie could probably have pulled it off.

  26. camille

Maisie Williams has belted a huge amount of wrapping paper, in fact possibly a duvet WRAPPED IN said wrapping paper, around herself. Stop that, kid.

She and her on-show sister frequently make poor choices of clothing, actually. Both of you, knock it off.

My mother, bless her thrifty little heart, wraps birthday presents in the Sunday comics page. It almost always looks neater than this.

Even though I think she has resting smirk face (which I kind of love), I always think Natalie Dormer just looks so cool. Even though it was for a role, I kind of wish she still had the half-shaved head, since I thought she looked awesome.

Apparently the dress is made from pages of X-men comics, Neil Gaiman’s Sandman, and Sailor Moon (the pages with Japanese ;) The belt is actually made from pages of Game of Thrones books. She has worn this before and it was designed by Ryan Jude Novelline. In case you’re interested in the details of this Helena-Bonham-Carter-esque dress.

I want to like the Maisie dress, but it overwhelms her small frame. It’s like a gift bag with excessive tissue paper. None of the other outfits really serve the GoT ladies much better. Where’s the mother of dragons? Maybe she was at least spared an unflattering look.

  37. kay

This is probably irrational and i’m sure it’s been done before, but it seems kind of mean to include a 16 year old who only just started getting publicity in fig madness. I’m remembering back to some of the stuff i wore when i was 16 and i just shudder.

  38.  Kevin

Some of the dresses were questionable, but the GoT ladies all looked gorgeous at Comic-Con. I thought little Maisie looked awesome at the panel (in the shiny, coppery dress from the group photo above). Her face is just glowing in some of the pics, like here:
    http://i.imgur.com/QTlwI8P.jpg
which was not always the case at other events where her makeup didn’t look right.

Leave Maisie alone please! She is cute and adorable and she is having fun. And she is so young, so maybe just wait a couple of years until you start picking on her? Oh I know she is in the spotlight so she invites criticism, it’s all in good fun yadda yadda yadda. Maybe, but it still irksome to focus all this snark on a 16 year old.

That Maisie Williams wreck reminds me of the party game where each team is given some garbage bags, aluminum foil, masking tape, and some other assorted random mystery shit from which you must design a dress or outfit on one of your team members. I always win that game, but you won’t see me preserving the “dress” for my next red-carpet outing.
