Love the pattern on the first one and her hair is lovely. The rest is a bit wackadoodle, though.
This is exactly what I thought. On slide one I was like, hmmm… this is ok. I covet her hair. The movie idea sounds amazing.
Then the second slide… no, just… so much no.
See, I think her hair looks so yellow and not nice with her skin in all of these slides except for the last. It looks nice, I suppose, if it were attached to a different head. But it’s like she’s trying to keep her super white blond hair from when she was wee, and it’s not quite right anymore.
Also, all of these outfits are wrong. Eek.
I actually really love that first dress. For me. Not a fan of the rest (well, the third is fine, but belongs on someone older.) I HATE everything about that Austin Powers outfit. HATE HATE HATE.
I love the first one, but I love crazy 70′s-esque prints and I love a sheer sleeve.
That new Prada collection is so ugly it BURNS. I walk past their Soho store all the time and the heinous 90′s platform shoes with poorly-constructed appliques offend me. I am also not thrilled about J. Crew knocking off the printed pants as I do not need to see every fashionista wannabe prancing around in them. (Sorry. Hit a nerve.)
Where was the Fab? Oh deary me, those clothes were… interesting.
Oh my…I kind of like the Austin Powers suit on her. And yes, her acting was amazing in Super 8.
She was wonderfully moving in Super 8. A great actress in the making and she always looks cute and appropriate. Those Fanning girls are amazing.
I actually love the suit, but I have an unfortunate affinity for women in wacky menswear, going back to Annie Hall.
I’m not a huge fan of any of these. BUT SHE LOOKS HER AGE! Which is so exciting to me.
I know it’s all kinda weird, but am I alone in saying that I love her offbeat style? It’s quirky and unique, and I think she’s pulling it off!
No, I agree, ellenderavenous. I even got a kick out of the Austin Powers look. It’s much better than I looked in fashion during those years (read: grunge era). Her schoolgirl clothes are hardly in the Hit Me Baby, One More Time category. Let’s just applaud the young woman for dressing in age appropriate clothing while avoiding “too twee” and “too matronly” comments.
me three! as much as i adore Ms. Shipka, i actually prefer Elle’s as it’s more unique and not so girly!
I’m with you – I think she looks quirky and cool and completely age appropriate. I think the Austin Powers suit is the worst of the bunch, but still appropriate with a touch (ok, more than a touch) of wack. And she was just incredibly amazing in Super 8. Her striking looks and her acting ability are going to take her a long way.
Well, I must be smoking it too, because I love ALL of these on her. They aren’t for everyone, but she looks awesome, has her own style, and it works for her, even the Austin Powers. Some things are objectively ugly – these aren’t. A some clothes wear the wearer – these don’t. Some clothes discover the softer side of Sears, or the trashier side of Victoria’s Secret, or the dirtier, more frayed side of Coachella. So many ways to be fug… But these are all lovely. Odd, maybe, but not in the trying-too-hard way. She looks great.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen her in any movies, but in pictures, she always reminds me of a blond Wednesday Addams (the Lisa Loring one, not the Christina Ricci one) and these outfits are wacky enough that she could at least be an Addams cousin or something. I can’t fault someone so young for wearing any of these. They’re kinda fun, except for the boring white shirt/black skirt thingy.
i don’t care for the first dress, i think it’s too old for her, but everything else is cute. even the suit is adorably wacky. and i love the jumper on the last slide. maybe with a different shirt though. she’s a kid and i like that she looks like a kid.
Would somebody please wake me when the ’70′s are over again? I don’t want to look at these clothes any more. Bad enough the first time.
“I know it’s all kinda weird, but am I alone in saying that I love her offbeat style? It’s quirky and unique, and I think she’s pulling it off!”
I also agree, and I like that she looks her age too. I have no problem with the “school uniforms” either, especially the jumper and boots. That’s my favorite. I might even wear that and I’m far from her age. And when you think of the things she could be wearing, well, I shudder.
See, I like the black print chiffon, because it’s something I would have worn at her age AND I would wear it now to assuage my Liz Lemon-y tendencies to cover everything. I also think it is pretty. And while the suit is overly busy and a shocking color, it’s the sort of thing she can get away with now so why not? She looks cute in it.
So, the first one is kind of cool, but not for a child. Sure, this child has Presence and an Air About Her, but she’s still a child. I may be alone in being put off by the extreme precociousness of the Fanning sisters, but there you have it. I find it a little creepy. This is nothing about their personalities or their character, which by all accounts is very upstanding. This is just about the image that’s projected, which weirds me out. I like to see kids being kids.
Liking the clothes is beside the point for me. I just appreciate that she’s a teenage girl having fun with her wardrobe. She looks cute and confident and overall I think the Fanning girls have their feet on the ground and it only makes me like them – and their style – more.
No, no, no, and no. Her hair really looks dreadful. That is not a color that grows naturally from any head, and the straightening is unnecessary and not fashionable.
I don’t have as many problems with her style as I do with her hair. Something about the color is just too yellow and harsh. I did like her in Super 8, think she has great talent, and am also grateful that she dresses her age and seems to have it together like her sister. I just think she should hire a new colorist.
I love her boots on Pic #4, but she doesn’t wear outfits, she wears costumes!
And this one is “Amish school girl uniform (with optional milking barn boots for after-school chores)”
All of these outfit were awful! Not even a teenager can pull these off
I don’t hate any of these outfits. She’s exploring, and discovering her look, and all her bits are covered. She’s 14 – too old to dress like Kiernan Shipka, yet thankfully not pulling a Momsen. She probably wants to differentiate herself from her older sister’s super feminine look. When I think of what I wore at 14, I’m thankful nobody was taking photos.
Looks like Elle is taking styling advise from Style Rookie, Tavi Gevinson.
First dress . . . well, too old actually.
Terrible hair dye- the roots are ginger!
My concerns are less about her outfit choices and more about the fact that SHE APPEARS TO BE WEARING A WEDDING BAND!!!
I kind of love her as an interesting fashion person and that she seems pretty steady and grounded. But she’s what, 13? Isn’t there something wrong with this picture? Even if I’m wrong and she’s all of 14?
I see Fugs and Fugs.
