Fug or Fab: Sarah Jessica Parker

fug-or-fab

Mayor Bloomberg, please keep your eyes to yourself!

And not only because if there’s anything you should be checking out, it’s SJP’s legs:

I mean, seriously, can we just take a moment to acknowledge that this woman is 45 years old? Regardless of how you feel about her ensemble, girlfriend is in GOOD SHAPE.

I’m just amazed to finally see SJP in something I would actually wear! Albeit if I were much, much skinnier.

She is one hot momma, but this ensemb. just isn’t very flattering. It makes me uncomfortable.

It’s a near miss because of the asymmetry — the hem looks like it’s accidentally hiked up on one side, and I don’t think the one shoulder thing helps. LOVE that necklace, though, and would have loved it with a simple tank dress or something with a v neck. That saggy line at the top and the creeping hem makes her look like she wrapped up in an emergency bedsheet.

I mean, it’s GOOD, but it could have been just a bit better. Ok, a good bit better. It doesn’t do her full justice.

Oh, for Pete’s sake! Would someone, anyone just give girlfriend a sandwich? Damn, I’m sick of being told that that is the ideal to which I should aspire.

I’m 45 years old, and I have those legs (although not that hair, arms, body, income, wardrobe, etc), but they look just as good in a dress that’s about 4″ longer. In fact, better: with a hem that high, you begin to wonder if they ever in fact do meet, or whether her body is just slung between those two posts like something hung out to dry.

And at our age, ‘hung out to dry’ is exactly NOT the phrase you want people to be thinking.

  6. Soph

I think it could be a tad longer, but regardless, she’s rocking it. (Plus I have polka dot tights exactly like those and I love them, so it’s hard for me to be negative about anything concerning them. Or polka dots in general, really.)

  7. Kate
    0

I like the dress, though it is a little short for a woman in mid-life. A few more inches of length would do her good.

As for the rest of her outfit – bag, shoes, stockings, jewelry – I’m unimpressed.

  8. Geisha_Girl

In such great shape? She’s far too skinny for me to consider her in great shape. The dress makes her pelvis look like a frying pan.

if you’ve got it flaunt it…especially if you’re wearing the cutest polka dot tights in the whole wide world

It’s hot and she looks hot in it- and not even in a MILFy kind of way. But I did see these photos on another site and her arm looked super freaky- like those Madonna Zombie Arms but way skinnier. They don’t here, though. Odd.

I am so very tired of the sandwich comments.
I think SJP’s get-up is pretty awful, but not for sandwich reasons.

  12. Jill

I, too, am tired of sandwich comments. If someone took me to take a diet pill, I’d punch them in the face. I don’t see how it works the other way around.

  13. Melly

Wait. The shoes. Did I just see that they’re sort of…camel toes? Distracting.

I like the dress. But it must be adhering to her stockings when she walks, which maybe has accentuated the too-short problem. It is too short. Her hair is completely fabu.

  14. TaraMisu
    0

I too LOVE the polka dot tights. The dress tho….. I think it’s the missing shoulder. It makes her chestal area kind of wonky. Just put the other strap back on and she’s good to go.

  15. Allie
    0

I don’t like the asymmetrical top. And while I’ll admit she is in great shape, I think she is a little bow-legged so the dress would be more flattering if a couple of inches longer. Love the hose (even though I personally think hose were invented by the devil and avoid them like the plague).

  16. Susan
    0

SJP is an unconventionally beautiful woman. However, I hate this outfit and I especially hate it when she stands like that. (A gap in her thighs big enough to drive a truck through.)

Also, not a fan of the cloven hoof pumps.

  17. The Other Molly
    0

    I agree with Geisha.
The dress does make her pelvis look like a frying pan.
    And SJP is unattractively thin.
Is it just me, or do her knees look like they have faces on them?

  18. Matt
    0

Lose the stockings, and make the dress a couple inches longer and I’m on board.

  19. Richard
    0

Well, she wins at being skinny, but I don’t consider that “in shape.”

Agreed on the length of the dress. Her legs are hilariously far apart and could use some coverage.

Her usual outlandish/fashion forward ensembles are a welcome distraction from the weathered coat rack that carries them.

    And seriously, those tights? Yikes.

  20. Clara
    0

She looks a bit haggish to me. The tights are too much, the skirt too short. Maybe it’s the way she’s standing? Speaking as an overweight 46 year old I have a bit of SJP envy. Her hair is perfect.

  21. Rayna
    0

I love me some SJP, for many reasons. And I love polka dot tights just because they’re fun. And I love her OTT statement necklace.

But I’m not loving this outfit. STILL not on board with the whole asymmetry thing. Put the other shoulder on the dress, please.

And gadzooks, it’s short! We get that you’re in shape, etc., but you don’t have to be nude in public to make the point.

A few inches longer, and another shoulder, and she would still be hot, just ladylike.

  22. Candice Pantz
    0

Just because you CAN wear something doesn’t mean you SHOULD. This is inappropriately short for a 45 year old woman, even one with fantastic legs.

  23. Evalyn
    0

45 – yes, and she looks every year of it in this photo. The dress is awkward looking, hiked up on one hip, one boob falling out, and her tiara has fallen around her neck. Her face is thin and haggard, her arms are skinny and veiny. She’s too thin and trying way too hard to look 20 something.

  24. CJ
    0

It looks like she has two necklaces. I dig the shorter “diamonds by the yard” one, but the mesh V necklace is fighting with the other necklace and with the neckline of the dress. So, I’d ditch that. I agree that the dress is a bit short. It also looks a bit off kilter, like she was sitting and now needs to pull it down and straighten it out. The bag, which I’m sure cost a fortune, is nice, but a bit too casual for the rest of the outfit, no? And it’s hard to get a close look at the shoes on my computer monitor — is that really a cloven toe?? All in all, I think SJP is pretty fab. She doesn’t EVER wear what I would, but I felt a deep affinity for her in her Square Pegs days, and even though she married the major crush of my junior high school years, I always find her to be so charming and winsome, I just can’t dislike her. I saw an interview with her. She started performing young and was helping to support her family when she was a little girl. After a childhood like that, I can see where her love and fun for fashion derives and I applaud her frivolity and daring. I also applaud her for not changing her face for Hollywood. She is not a conventional beauty but takes what she has and rocks it! As for “in shape,” I remember seeing her on the cover of a magazine several years ago. It may have even been “Shape” magazine, and in the interview, she talked about how she sometimes “forgets to eat”… so the sandwich comments have some merit! Rock on SJP, and don’t forget to eat lunch!

  25. v
    0

The ‘haggard face’ thing? Speaking as an ex-dental-employee meself. Did she at some point do something to make fewer molars in the back (a la Diana Ross – reputedly) in order to bump up the cheekbones? She seems to be a way more sensible human than that, so maybe she is just thin of cheek. Or thin in general.

    Generally I think she’s lovely.

    There.

  26. CJ
    0

SJP wears stuff I would never wear. Pretty much all the time. But I think that’s why I love her so much. I have every reason to hate her: she married Matthew Broderick, who I loved all through junior high and was sure would marry me. Still, I can’t hate her. She is truly winsome. I saw her on Broadway performing “How to Succeed” with her hubby and they were utterly adorable together. I applaud her sense of frivolity and daring when it comes to fashion and I love that she didn’t change her face for Hollywood. That being said, she once said in an interview that she sometimes “forgets to eat.” So the sandwich comments have merit. Rock on, SJP…and don’t forget to eat!

  31. Leigh

I love the tights-very cute, fun, appropriate. The shoes ARE camel-toe-ish, which I didn’t know could happen with shoes? Weird.
The dress is too short. Not necessarily because she’s 45, just too short in general. And she has fantastic legs.
And she should eat a sandwich or two. For the people that take issue with that, does anyone remember her a million years ago in Girls Just Wanna Have Fun? When she was thin, but not desperately so? Granted, she was younger, and it’s generally easier to look better when you’re young, but I’m so sick of all these celebrities claiming that they are naturally thin, which may be true, but they aren’t naturally THAT thin. SJP works out a lot, I don’t think there’s any denying that and she could look a whole lot better if she put on about 20 pounds. It’s not just her, Cameron Diaz and Teri Hatcher are two more examples of actresses who were slightly heavier (though never heavy) until they got famous and then lost a bunch of weight and now say they’re just naturally thin and have kind of become Skelator-y.
    Ok, end of rant.

Props to SJP for stayin petite. That is one dumb dress, though. It might be useful just in case you need to quickly hustle on the streets to pay the cover to the tails and tux ball.

The second photo clearly shows the exhaustion incurred, having not only to earn her way into the ball the hard way, but also to fend off Bloomberg’s overpowering, capitalist animal lust for a big shiny Swarovski handkerchief necklace. I’m proud of SJP for emerging the victor from what was surely a furious, bellow-filled battle.

  33. Jennifer

Good shape???? Her sunken in cheeks could hold a shot glass of tequila – each!!! ICK! Eat a freakin’ cheeseburger, SJP.

I’m sorry, but she’s got skinny bow-legs which are not exceptionally attractive at this age, or any age. Girlfriend needs to dress for her body type and age, just like everyone else. I don’t consider her in any way extraordinary for her age, or something all of us need to be aspiring to. As far as appearance goes, she’s got her good points and her flaws, just like the rest of us. And the short and tight is just looking this side of slutty.

  35. Mamie Eisenhower

    Leigh,

Let me tell you from experience, so you are warned. There are two (2) ways to go when you get to be an old human female (admittedly, this happens to some ethnicities, classes, and lifestyle groups earlier than others), and neither (0) of them involves looking as good as you did in your 20s.

One, you can chub up. The face & hands look “good” (by definition, youthful) for longer; but elsewhere? The cellulite and the flab and the matronliness.

Or two, you can stay the same weight and lose 50% of the lovely flesh on your face and other extremities. Which way you go depends on your lifestyle, not on willful misbehavior or bad attitude.

Three/four inexorable reasons for this sub-optimal situation that you cannot stop, so count on them, in a mixed cocktail: 1) Gravity, 2) Lifelong accumulation of stress in interaction with genetic programming for cells to age and die, and 3) loss of what little testosterone women have.

I know. It’s more fun to deliver imaginary sandwich lectures to middleaged ladies. It’s like a magical chant of protection from age. Good luck with that.

I just wanted to write a note regarding how people are quick to say, “Eat a sandwich!” I actually did not grow up in the U.S., so I don’t know how SJP used to look (I guess I could google it). And I think Leigh and some other people have some good points, so I’m not saying SJP is naturally this skinny, or that aspiring to be overly skinny should be encouraged. Because it shouldn’t.

I’m just saying in general, in life, not necessarily about celebrities, that people should not be so eager to tell skinny people to gain weight. I might be hated for this, but I am naturally thin. And I eat a lot. I just have a freakish metabolism and good eating habits, thanks to growing up in Japan and having good digestion-related genes on my mom’s side. But I still got teased for being skinny, and even had people asking me straight to my face if I have any eating disorders.

What I’m trying to say is, thin people are insecure about their looks too, and just because it is “in” right now to celebrate curves and put down emaciated looking models etc. in showbiz, people should not feel like they can put down people for being thin. If somebody is too skinny, of course it wouldn’t be out of line to try to offer a helping hand regarding nutrition and possibly eating disorders. But, I disagree with the knee-jerk reaction of putting down skinny girls as not being “a real woman” (re: “Real Women Have Curves” campaign – that hurts, guys, cuz I’m not curvey), and jumping to conclusions about their eating habits, etc.

Okay, end of rant. Please note I’m not necessarily disagreeing with people saying SJP should eat a sandwich. I just wanted to let people know of a different perspective for people who might read this.

If her other shoulder were covered instead of bare, I think I would love this dress. The stockings are kicky, the neckline is interesting, her hair is glorious. But that asymmetrical shoulder ruins all the good.

  42. Lang

I love the tights. She has great legs. I love that she’s wearing a super-short dress at 45. Not a damn thing wrong with that. Jesus, she’s only 45, not 75 people!

  43. Diana

Too short. Makes her look sleazy not classy. I can’t wait for the ultra short hemline trend to end.

  44. NH

Looks like she tucked the left shoulder of her dress down into her dress, then hoiked the enpire line up above her bust.
Too much happening around the neckline – either the Glomesh neck or the necklace but not both. Tights – I have those tucked away in a drawer somewhere, left over from the 90′s.
And the cloven hooves? – just no.

  48. Alice
    0

She looks like an extremely stylish, thin woman well over 45. I think it’s the cigs. Kate Moss heading the same way. It’s like they say, once you hit a certain age you have to choose whether you want your face or your bottom to look nice. And I’m sure SJP’s bottom would win rear of the year any day.

  49. Meg
    0

Ugh, she does most certainly NOT look healthy. Her elbows look huge because her arms are so skinny, and her legs are so thin it looks like she is doing a handstand. Those bowed legged just kill me, you could drive a MAC truck through them. I definitely don’t think she’s naturally that thin, not when she “forgets to eat” and metabolism slows as you age. She looks god awful and deserves the horse comments she gets.

  50. Ondine

I’m sorry but SJP just doesn’t have the legs to wear a mini. They’re the wrong shape and she has a ghastly gap at the top. Like she’s spent her growing years riding a horse 24/7. There’s something strange about her eye makeup lately. Too much black? She’s looking scary.

I don’t get this ‘great legs’ business. Toned legs, yes – great legs, emphatically no. So we loved SATC, but even then i wondered why she flaunted her bow legs so much. Dressing for your body type and drawing attention to your assets, not your faults, is common sense.

And she certainly does not look good for her age. There’s a reason nature makes us fill out a little bit as we get older (and i don’t mean get fat!) – being too thin is AGEING.

Oh, and this outfit is the very definition of fug for me.

  60. JanetP

Mutton dressed as lamb (sorry, SJP) but I also dislike it on its own account. FUG.

On a side note, wouldn’t it be nice to see short hair on her? Or at least less agressively DONE hair? It always looks colored and worked to an inch of its life. Poor folicles.

SATC? one for worst ideas of all times.
