Fug the Cover: Marie Claire

Lately, Marie Claire has done some really good covers — like the revelatory au naturel Kim Kardashian shot (which Allure basically tried to rip off a couple months later, except for how theirs turned out really sweaty and less flattering and, well, worse), and the in-your-face Jolie shot, and even last month’s Blake Lively effort. So I was bummed out by the Kristen Wiig edition:

Kristen Wiig is a very pretty lady, and seems like she’s probably fun. Not that you would know it from this. If you had never heard of her before — say, you just woke up from a very long coma, in which your dead uncle told you all sorts of truths about your soul but absolutely nothing about pop culture — you would wonder if “HER LOL INTERVIEW” was actually supposed to read “LOW,” and that she’d spent the whole time in very low spirits and with low energy, speaking at low volume, sitting in low light, briefly lowing like a cow, and then, I don’t know, low-balling somebody on a pair of shoes on eBay. That thing is stiffer than a face on Real Housewives: Pick Any City. Her smile seems forced and insincere, as if the wind machine made it hard for her to breathe, and the pose seems arranged chiefly to maximize boob exposure — something I don’t traditionally associate with Marie Claire. In fact, to close the circle, LOL does not feel like a very Marie Claire term either. And can you really get naturally perfect skin? Isn’t the whole idea of having to do something to your skin to make it perfect the OPPOSITE of it being natural? I’m confused. I don’t think of Marie Claire as my friend who texts in teen shorthand and wears underboob blazers. Maybe we need to go out for a ladies’ night and hug it out over some cocktails.

Not to be picky but it says “Naturally Pretty Skin” not naturally perfect, which as you point out does not exsist!

The darker hair color just isn’t working on her.

At first glance I thought this was Alanis Morrisette.

I have no idea who this is. Sorry. And she is absolutely not sexy.

Looks like we have a pesky open tag.

You don’t know who Kristen Wiig is? Do you perhaps live under a rock in Antarctica?

Unless perhaps you mean you don’t recognize this strange robot facsimile of Kristen Wiig. In which case, carry on.

Seriously, do not know who this is. Is she a TV person? I don’t own one. What is her contribution to society that I should know?

Her chestal area is making me very uncomfortable. I don’t associate Kristen Wiig with cleavage/maximum boob exposure/insecure superstardom. I mean, she wore a bra a la SJP for her bedroom scenes with the Hamm-ster in Bridesmaids. She seems to not want us to know some of her secrets.

My problems with this cover are that her hair is way too dark or the shot is poorly lit, her makeup doesn’t work (she looks like she has a shiner on her right eye), she looks like she’s wearing some Diane Keaton castoff suit from a makeup commercial, and she isn’t wearing a bra! Marie Claire, it’s the cover, there are kids watching! FUG!

She looks like the bizarre love child of Katy Perry and Alanis Morisette in that photo!

She looks like an older, depressed Katy Perry.

Huh, before i scrolled to see the full picture i swore this was Katy Perry from the eyes up. Never noticed the resemblance before?? Also that photo with the headline LOL interview do not imply good laughs…

Bad lighting and forehead Photoshop stretch don’t add to the pretty. But i do want to learn how to “have sex every day!!!”.

Oh I’m sorry. I just fell asleep while looking at this cover.

I actually like the dark hair on her. But what’s up with the stupid half-smile? She’s a very funny COMEDIENNE… how about a pretty smile? I’m digging her make-up (lip color, specifically) but the facial expression they went with… did they purposely pick the worst shot?

  14. amy

This is a very typical facial expression for her, sort of low key and subdued right before she does something that has me truly ROFLOL. (my apologies)

I’ve never seen her hair look so boringly polished, and I agree that the color is not flattering. Wonder if it’s really like that, or if that’s part of the photo-shopping? The boobage is totally out of character for her usual persona, and the whole styling effort screams generic.

Her hair color looks flat and harsh :(

This screams (very quietly) “You know I’m funny, but please take me seriously as an actress”. We already do, K! Just stop making those depressing indie-type slacker-grows-up movies. Even the presence of The Hamm won’t help you forever.

I thought this was Andie Macdowell with straightened hair at first glance… they look a little similar: http://hookedonhouses.net/2011/10/26/andie-macdowells-storybook-tudor-for-sale-in-nc/

I know I should be all yay rah women in comedy with her, but I find her painfully unfunny. Her tics, mannerisms, and affectations grate on me like nothing else.

Ditto. Can’t fathom her popularity on SNL — I think she is where funny goes to die, but have liked her a lot in her movie roles other than Bridesmaids.

Another cover making me ask “Who is this person?”

And for blue perfect heaven’s sake, WHY the tittie? Must every female celebrity flash her ladypillows for legitimacy?

This whole thing gives off the impression that whoever styled this did not know what to do with her. It doesn’t fit her personality at all!

I like her. I don’t like her as much as I like Amy or Tina, but I like her. That said (and I say this next bit with absolutely no concrete, objective basis for my opinion), I think she often projects an awkward and uncomfortable insecurity. Maybe it’s the propensity toward horrible, dishwater neutrals (and I like neutrals!). Maybe it’s the uncomfortable half-smile. I dunno. I am not gonna blame a gal for being insecure (and indeed, many comedians are). I’m just saying that it’s a consistent thing I notice with her, and this cover photo, whilst looking very little like her, manages to project that same aura of insecurity.

As for specifics, that hair is so very wrong on her, I can’t even look at it.

Even Wiig has a sideboob photo?! Can sideboob trend officially die now please. Dark hair is way too harsh on her and makes her look older. Fug this cover for sure.

OMG WHY DO Y’ALL DISLIKE KRISTIN WIIG SO MUCH?

You are eternally negative toward her

I love her, but she wears awful, unflattering outfits, and it makes me sad for her. She deserves better clothing. That’s the opposite of disliking her personally.

I didn’t dislike her until I read Lainey’s most recent blind item about the “cliche”. She’s my main suspect for “co-star over 30″. Now I just have The Sads when I look at her.

She looks SO uncomfortable that it makes me uncomfortable to look at the pic. Boo because I adore her.

The rest of the ‘film’ must have been awful if this wasn’t an outtake…

Also, the photoshop with the plastic-looking skin is appalling.

WHAT is happening on the right side of her torso (on the left in the photograph)? It’s beyond even the usual hacky photoshop work – it looks like they literally hacked a chunk of her body out with an axe. That contour is not physiologically possible without removing most of your ribs and internal organs.

If you bulls-eyed this cover with an arrow, it would be center breastplate. I wonder if the cover subject gets any say whatsoever about which photo is used? Probably not, hunh?

This photo looks like they used the Instagram “hi-lo” filter.

Okay, I looked her up. I have never seen anything she has ever done. Why is she such a big deal? I don’t get it and why the slams on people who do other things besides get their brains and personalities sucked out by the boob tube?

I have concerns about the K-Wiig styling here. Also about the claim of being married five years and having sex every day.

“Kristen Wiig is a very pretty lady…” Not in Bridesmaids, she’s not. Clearly she’s had some work done. And not really in a good way.

I love her, this cover I KNEW would end up on Fug the Cover. It just looks so unnatural and awkward. I understand wanting to show a sexy side of her but this wasn’t it.
