Fug the Cover: Emma Watson

When I got this issue in the mail, upon my return from Fashion Week, I looked at it and thought, “aw, Rumer Willis got a cover! That’s awesome for her.”  Yeah, this is Emma Watson. And I don’t know why they did this to her, but it might have been easier if they’d just written WE HATE HER HAIRCUT and slapped that headline right over her face.

And added something about racy boudoir photos inside. This looks more like a Maxim cover than a Glamour cover.

I don’t hate this at all, she looks very Victoria Beckham-esque.

I… must be missing something here, because I think she looks great and her face looks very Emma-like and I did not, for one second, confuse her with Rumer Willis.
And I think the hair just looks grungy and very I-just-woke-up-after-a-really-hot-dream-involving-Tom-Felton or something.

I had less of a problem with the hair (as noted in recent posts, she’s growing out a pixie which can be problematic, but these are professionals, they could have come up with something else), than I did the heavy makeup and trashy lingerie themed clothing.

“Grows Way Up” does not have to equal what US Glamour styles as sex kitten, hence the “headboard head” (as men have been wont to call my curly mane)

British Glamour was a bit better – http://www.glamourmagazine.co.uk/beauty-and-hair/celebrity/hair/2012/03/emma-watson-hair-hairstyles-makeup-look-book

Yep. The hair is fine, I guess, relatively speaking…I chalk up all of her recent headsuits as basically trying to make the best out of a bad situation. As a side note, I’ve noticed that I’ve had the urge to tiptoe around saying straight out that her pixie haircut was terrible on her and she lacks the face for short hair. It was, and she does. On paper, she should be able to carry short hair, but in reality, she can’t. Just one of those mysteries of life.

The real problem is the styling here, which reads cheap like stale cigarettes and bad perfume, from the makeup to the clothes and facial expression (most especially, the visible tongue). I get that she’s not a complete child, but I think she’s too overtly breaking bad in an attempt to shake off her HP aura. It seems as if she’s trying to convey that she’s serious and edgy and grown-up, but if one really is serious and edgy and grown-up, it doesn’t need to be so obviously stated.

        1) I was never fully on board with the pixie either. She’s got good bone structure, but for some reason, it didn’t mesh with the super short cut. I totally understood it though – if I hadn’t been allowed to cut my hair without contractual approval from ages 10-20, I’d have done the same.

        2) I don’t think *she’s* trying to shake off HP, so much as stylists and editors are belaboring the point that she’s not Hermione anymore. I think this girl is seemingly well grounded for growing up so very, very publicly, and I applaud her parents for their excellent parenting skills.

Re (2), yes, I guess I am assuming that this is emanating from her somewhat, mostly based on some questionable fashion choices and some disappointing gossip (hardly unassailable evidence, I know). It’s just the overall feeling I get from the image she’s projecting over, say, the past year or so. I thought she would have to OK or have some input in the photoshoot styling, but I hear where you’re coming from. Basically, I’ve got no static with EW and hope she transitions to a fulfilling and stellar career.

Glamour has really been striking out lately, with this and… who was in the all-denim a few months ago? Vanessa Hudgens?

I straight out hate this cover every time I see it. There’s a difference between edgy and skanky; this crosses the line. And her open mouth looks awkward.

I like hair and make up, but wish she was wearing real clothes. I agree that grown up doesn’t have to mean lingerie.

I’m more unnerved by her pose, with the legs sticking out the chair back’s opening.

THANK YOU FOR MENTIONING THE CHAIR. I can’t even begin to focus on her hair or anything else – I’m just staring at her thighs jammed into that thing. WHOSE IDEA WAS THAT?

YES! And it’s so confusing. I was looking at this cover while in line at the grocery store and it took me about five minutes to figure out what was going on in the upper body region what with the wood and the furry frou-frou and the hand and the legs. My first thought was: “That is one freaky bodice…”

I thought this was Jena Malone at first.

YES! Never Rumor Willis, whose jawline will make her easy to pick out of a lineup every single time. But Jena Someone-Please-Tell-Me-It’s-Too-Much Malone? Bullseye.

A propos of nothing Emma, this cracked me up:

Paris Jackson: “I Want to Be My Own Person”
    Michael’s daughter opens up

I guess that second sentence more polite than, “Too damn bad, kid,” but…passive-aggressive much, Glamour?

What kind of world do we live in where a young woman “growing up” equates looking like a sex kitten? She is an intelligent, articulate, attractive young woman. They should treat her as such!

It looks like she went to one of those old-timey photo places where you can get your picture taken as an old west saloon girl.

    • pantsonfire
      0

Yes! That’s exactly it. Except maybe it’s like 150 years into the future and instead of old west saloon girl, it’s late 20th-century strung-out Las Vegas trollop.

She is such a pretty girl, there is just no way that with an the army of hair, make up, and photography professionals you know they had on hand, this was the BEST picture of her from the shoot. Just absolutely no way.

What the hell kind of face is she making?

I like this, am I weird? I think the face she is making is awkward but I love her hair.

Her mouth is killing me. It looks like she’s saying “duh.” Not attractive.

I don’t mean to disparage her mouth. She has a beautiful mouth. I wanted to clarify I meant that of all the photos, the editors picked the one that features an open-mouthed, tongue showing shot. Weird.

  16. Susan

I think she looked much better on this cover than she usually does, and looks nothing like Rumer Willis. I think Rumer Willis looks so weird that it would be hard for anyone to get mixed up with her. IMHO Rumer is just plain homely and always has been. Not much could help her.

I really, really dislike her hair. REALLY dislike. BUT that may be because it is nearly identical in style to a person I know irl who I dislike intensely, and have absolutely no respect for. I’m trying to get past that, but the person I know would dress and pose like that, randomly, thinking that it’s super hott and sexxxay, so this cover is just going to have to be a NO for me.

Sorry Emma, I really do love your work!

WHY IS SHE STUCK IN A CHAIR?

  21. Miss Louise

This picture has evacuated everything distinctive about Emma, who in my view is all class, and left us with generic tacky starlet. With her legs through a chair. It truly looks like she’s on the toilet. A total misread of their covergirl. Hate it.

Ummm….I took this cover to my stylist to cut all my hair off. Yes, the overall styling of the cover is awful, and she looks totally overdone, but I think the hair is cute (and thankfully it is on me too).

I generally like Emma Watson’s style (though not here), and I think her hair is so funky and shiny in this shot. However, she looks like she’s about to make that face where you stick your tongue hard behind your bottom lip which then says to the onlooker “Duh! You idiot!” (maybe it’s a British facial expression) I can’t unsee it…

  24. Neil

Even with her hair styled like that and pulling that face, Emma still looks a hundred times better than Rumer Willis. That said, I don’t like this cover at all. The outfit looks like – were we to see all of it properly – it’d be a total mess, and I don’t like how they have her doing a weird contortion through the back of a dining room chair.

  25. Jill Hartzold Morino

My biggest problem is that the pose makes it looks like she could be sitting on a very fancy toilet.

Like others have said, I don’t mind the hair. It’s the clothing that seems wrong. Emma might try edgier styles, but she never looks flat-out trashy. That cover photo does not look like it belongs to the intelligent, classy girl presented in the article inside.

I had the same reaction when I got mine. The rest of the photos are no better and who ever did the interview should get fired.

It’s the photoshopping of hard shadow lines behind her jaw that spoils this photo. That, and sticking her legs out of the back of a Chippendale chair while squashing a kitten to her bosom. And what is that part of her body outside the chair, in the lower left corner, opposite the Jackson quote- thigh? Side of her arm?

I actually get Ke$ha with a short comb-over from this. Which is so far from reality it’s stupid and I almost want to disavow what I just wrote.

I think she looks cute – they were going for open mouthed sexy, she just hasn’t got the lips for it.

You guys! She totally looks exactly like the girl who was in orphan and then in hunger games – I am going to google that right now…

Isabelle Furhman – she played Clove and made that face the entire movie. It’s not a compliment.

Her mouth is horrible! Whoever picked this shot must have been a follower of he who must not be named!

I wasn’t paying enough attention to the photo (too excited to get to the no-doubt-hilarious text!!) and thought she had a pet dog on her lap for a moment there. The best covers are the ones people want to frame; no one will put this on their wall. I suspect the shoot didn’t go well and this was just the shot whose angles worked best to fit the cover text around.

I like her haircut. But what is that fuzzy thing in her lap? I thought at very first it was one of those tiny dogs.

Do magazines intentionally not know how to style their cover star or is it just for PR to get everyone talking about how poorly styled it is? I don’t think this makes her any older or sexier. I get the point of it, but it looks forced. Try again!
