Fug the Cover: Emma Stone in W

I understand the desire to do something artsy and different, giving you a new and exciting way to view a celebrity (see: Chastain’s first cover of this same magazine). But there’s “different” and then there’s “Oh, come on, really?” This looks like a photo some girl texted to her boyfriend six hours before Prom.

Creepy. At first I thought it was a Fanning. Don’t blame her for trusting the photographer, but dang, this is uncomfortable. Not sexy, but very sad looking.

This looks like an amateur porn still. (And it reminds me of Chloe Fugvingny in Gummo…like she’s gonna wear electrical tape on her bewbs and jump on an unmade mattress all random-like.)

    Wow, these photos are horrific.

That carpet looks contagious on that last photo… I believe she should have charged a magazine a year worth health insurance for standing on the carpet barefoot. Ewwww…..

Is that a bra or an eye mask?

These kinds of covers always give me pangs of self-doubt, like, “wow, I am really old now and definitely not cool enough to understand the artistic genius of the W people.” Except, no. This whole thing is terrible. Terrible and creepy.

Right? I’m not a W reader, so I don’t know if these photos fit in with their esthetic. But that’s irrelevant — what wizardry of photography, atrocious styling and horrid lighting erased all of the allure, charm and beauty from Ms. Stone?!

It would be better if it’s the MMMxH&M trompe d’oeil top.

These are all hideous pictures. Truly. Poor Emma.

I feel like she is a little girl being taken advantage of by the older neighbor her mom left her with as emergency babysitting. I feel like these should be exhibit A in his trial. So sad, I adore her and couldn’t have imagined a sad photo of her much less four in one magazine.

That’s it exactly. Or like a poor addict who is forced to turn tricks to pay debts. She looks wasted and…used. I was so glad to see the end of ‘heroin chic’, I hope it’s not back in vogue!! Emma you’re gorgeous & vivacious, come back to us!!!

Exactly the vague child trafficking vibe is really offputting. Terrible photo idea.

Concur. Sexualization and objectification of a very young looking woman. I thought we overcame this.

I thought it looked like kind of like a Terry Richardson shoot, but I guess it’s not. If I were her, I would be pretty bummed about how these photos turned out.

On my computer, the strapless bra looks like a black addition to the photo, ala Glamour’s don’ts with the box obliterating a woman’s eyes to mask her identity and save her the embarrassment. This is a big fat DON’T too, but since it’s the cover, clearly too late. I thought so much more of Emma. I am so, so SOOOOOO tired of seeing young actresses in their underwear on magazine covers. It’s sad enough for some unknown who’s hoping for her big break, but sheesh, Emma certainly has the clout to have told the photographer and the stylist no.

WTF? This is W? Looks like a low-rent tabloid. Where the heck did they shoot this? They should all be ashamed….

I actually find this intriguing because it IS so different from what you would typically see in a magazine spread. There’s something kind of punk rock about being ugly on purpose. Not sure if I like it, but it definitely made me think.

    It’s a little kiddie pr0n in feeling . . . kinda creepy, IMO.

Agreed. Except for the 3rd shot, which I thought was halfway decent.

I’m now envisioning that her direction was “act like Lindsay Lohan’s career,” which makes the whole thing seem like a brilliant and biting commentary. At least that’s what I’m telling myself.

Oh so awful. Why edgy has to equal trashy in some people’s minds is just beyond me.

  19. Liz985

What bums me out even more is that Emma and her people signed onto this. Really? You’re white hot right now, people love you, and you agreed to this? Girl, if you don’t exercise your power now, you never will.

  20. Donna4Eva

Wow. That’s depressing. These look like stills from a documentary on under-age Eastern European human trafficking.

I agree with one of the comments, that bra looks totally photoshopped on.

  22. Alicia

The more I look at this, the more I am amazed by how awful it is. Did they find an actual child molester’s apartment and do the shoot there? Why does Emma look like she should be starring in Less Than Zero?

  23. Susan
    0

The only reason I know it is her is because you told me it is. Seriously looks nothing like her, which might be a good thing given how awful these pictures are.

Have you ever seen “Showgirls” on broadcast TV where they photoshop bras on them women during topless scenes? That is what that cover looks like, Nomi Malone with a painted on bra.

  27. Lizzy

She looks like she’s 14 years old and she’s been pressured into being photographed by some pervy older guy. Ick!

  28. Nimue

I love it. I find it cool. I like that she looks a little unpolished. I like that the photo almost seem private. I think it looks very innocent even though she’s only wearing a bra.
    I guess I’m in the minority. I don’t care.

I thought W was a women’s magazine? What women are meant to be pleased by this? I might get it in a men’s magazine… I wouldn’t like it but I would get it.

How was Emma thinking this would help her career?

  35. Minda

Gawd, it’s awful! Do they hate her? Is it possible to hate her? Because it seems like they do. We’re they trying to make her edgy? She has already proven she can do that. I just…don’t get it.

I didnt think it was possible for Emma Stone, one of the most beautiful girls in the public eye, to look this bad! Bad photography or bad makeup, but the blame cant be put on Emma for simply doing her job.

SO agree. Why would she think that shoot was okay?

  44. Scanderoon

Well, I think they were going for an uncomfortably unpolished, vulnerable in a being-used kind of way aesthetic, and I think they succeeded. I do not think it was a good idea, but darn, did they ever succeed in what they were trying to do.

    I feel unclean.

Yikes, that photoshoot is creepy. It doesn’t really feel like it’s giving you an insight into a more natural side of her; it’s just kind of a bummer to look at.

I am SO SICK of photo shoots that make grown women look like sad, sexually available children. And this one isn’t even Terry Richardson! Does Emma Stone not have sufficient clout to either a. refuse to pose this way, or b. get final approval on publishing the results?

  51. Faye
    0

I hope this isn’t offensive to say, but these look like documentary pics about a sexually abused teenager. There isn’t anything even slightly edgy about them; they just make me want to rinse my mouth out and turn the page.

I LOVE the cover. Love love love it! I love that her face is overexposed (no pun intended) and that it DOES look like she is at some seedy motel doing god knows what. The fact that so many people have so many reactions toward it makes it successful–the photo screams to have a backstory attached (ie, a text to a beau 6 hours before prom) and everyone gets to make up their own scenario. I don’t love the interior shots as much, but the cover is genius.

A whole lot of people had a strong reaction to Hurricane Katrina, but it was not a good thing.

      • KO33
        0

Wow what a strange comparison. An fluffy magazine cover photo that gets you thinking vs a tragic national disaster that killed people, displaced others, and left an entire region in shambles?

        • lindad
          0

Sorry, you were just equating something getting a strong reaction with success, which I think is a pretty horrid ethic. I do understand why you’re defensive, though.

        • Katharine
          0

“…An fluffy magazine cover photo that gets you thinking ….” About, judging by the reactions to this thread, an acclaimed, talented woman being abused and sexually violated. And the material deliberately intended to provoke this reaction is then dismissed as “fluff.”

Rape culture. You’re soaking in it.

        • Katharine
          0

As, I must add, are we all, which is why it’s so easy to casually dismiss images like this, or applaud them for their “edginess” instead of wondering why this is the role we make so many visible, beautiful and famous women play in the media.

But don’t they want us to BUY the magazine, too? I used to be a W subscriber, but the last thing I want lying around my house is this cover.

NO. It looks like pictures recovered from a murderer/rapist’s camera. Not edgy, not artistic, just gross.

Someone has definitely died in that by-the-hour motel this photoshoot took place in.

And GFY Heather, that was some marvelous shade you were throwing at Lindsey Lohan’s career. Spot on.

I hate hate hate the heroin addict look. Emma Stone is a genuine star — she does not need to be made up to look like Courtney Love. I thought (hoped) this shizz went out in the nineties.

  56. AmyK

Yeah. This looks like the inside of an Urban Outfitters catalog, not a magazine shoot.

WTF. Seriously what bugs me the most is the crookedness of every shot. How edgy. NOT.

  58. jerkygirl
    0

Gross. I think this is the worst Fug the Cover, ever. I’m with everyone who is seriously creeped out by this garbage and was surprised that Uncle Pervert wasn’t the one who shot it. I’m pretty open-minded in general, but trying to be “edgy” by basically glamorizing underage p*rn is just sick.

    • jerkygirl
      0

ETA: I’ve heard Terry Richardson referred to as “Uncle Pervert” many times, which is where that came from. I should have just used his name; sorry about that. I don’t think perversion is funny and shouldn’t have used a joke like that in my comment, but I can’t edit after I hit submit, so please forgive the thoughtless way I said that. Again, I apologize.

The photography is lazy, the poses are discomfiting, the clothing looks cheap and either trashy or infantile. Big NO.

  61. Sylvia Bullock

    Did Terry Richardson take these?

That cover is creepy in a grainy, unsavory porn kind of way.

  62. Kory

I saw the cover while online at Whole Foods and stopped in horror. She looks like a heroin addict. The internal pictures you posted are awful. It doesn’t jibe with her image AT ALL and it’s not artistic either. What the hell was she thinking? What the hell was her manager thinking? I’m so appalled. I’ve never been this angry about a magazine cover before. Maybe it’s because I genuinely like her.

  63. jean
    0

She looks like a slightly healthier version of Courtney Love and THAT depresses me. Where’s her sparkle? The Stoneness of Stone? Bad, bad idea. She’ll survive it of course because she’s got character and spine, but ug. Heads should roll.

  64. Akit

    Very Weird.

  65. brookemopolitan
    0

This is awful. She looks underfed and abused… I was expecting the photos from in the magazine to show bruises and tourniquets… with a more talented photographer (and perhaps linking to a movie) this could have made a huge statement about the status of women worldwide… but this just looks like objectification. She looks like a child. Hate, hate HATE it

  66. TonyG
    0

In terms of image, why do this? Makes no sense. I’ve heard of taking unflattering roles to prove no ego, but unflattering photos that conjure kids doing seedy things does not make sense.

  67. Melissa

One of the reasons I’ve never warmed to Emma Stone is I felt rushed to make the transition from high school girl (Easy A) to adult leading lady (Crazy Stupid Love), she has always still looked like a high school girl to me so I felt icky about “adult” bit, and it’s like this shoot is explicitly spelling that out.
