In which we, yet again, pay tribute to the plethora of wackitude brought to us by Australian celebrities.

I always find it comforting to be reminded that we Americans aren’t the only ones with a slew of tacky, disposable celebs. We’re still the worst offenders, I’m sure, but at least we’re not alone.

kimbra’s the woman in the video too and her own music is pretty good. that dress however…

I have a bizarre love for “Cameo Lover” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elyk9MBY72U (cute blindfolded male models and tambourines!) and I guess she just loves a big shoulder.

I also have a soft spot for Kimbra. I’ve been long nursing a theory that she’s going to be huge in North America, but this outfit suggests otherwise…

Tell me about it. I may have shrieked in despair when I saw her outfit.

She does deserve to be huge in NA, though, and huger than Gotye. I think that for a while this summer, people were trying to make her happen, and it didn’t quite stick.

kimbra’s the female voice in the song!
also BANANAS, IN PAJAMAS, THEY’RE WALKING DOWN THE STAIRS.
thank you for bringing me back to a childhood classic (yes, i am an infant)

I remember the bananas too! It took me back to the days of jelly sandals and roller skating. I really like that white strapless dress. I just wish it fit and wasn’t quite so long.

This just makes me want to move to Australia because these people are clearly having fun and not giving a damn.

      Amen.

These clothes are so tacky and horrible they are actually kind of awesome.

Amen, sister. All the Aussies that I have know have been fun people. It should also be noted that it is somewhere between late spring and early summer in Australia right now, so of course they are happy.

Isn’t Rachael Leahcar blind? (am I thinking of someone else?) If so, glad you guys didn’t make the blind joke on her slide!

    • Helen

According to Wikipedia, yes, Leahcar is 90% blind. Whoever helped her dress did a nice job IMO, except with styling – I don’t think the dress looks childish, just her hair.

In fact that’s one of my favorite outfits here, and in a non-circusy way, too. If her hair had been put up, I’d call her Best Dressed out of these shots.

      • Al
        0

Yes, and she’s also a teeny-tiny little thing. It would be hard NOT to make her look young!

I came here to say so too. The dress is age-appropriate; it’s just that the hair reminds me of 8th grade.

Thank you, Fug Girls! I’m an Aussie living here in the US and this just made my heart swell. Although I’ve now been here for six years and therefore have heard of three of these people, two of which are fruit.

There may be a theme here. At least half of the outfits easily have places in Cirque du Soleil!

Kimbra’s shoes are to die for!! I want them SOO bad! And seriously, all these ladies are cray.

The Ruby Rose dress looks like it was designed by Shepard Fairey.
KImbra looks like Ugly Betty in the thumbnail.
You have a mispelling in the Missy Higgins comment.

Casey Burgess appears to have been recently traumatized. Seriously, I have an urge to console her and say, “here have this glass of whiskey. It will calm your nerves.”

The Bananas in Pyjamas shot reminds me of an Entertainment Weekly piece I read years ago wherein the writer first runs across the show while home sick. It contains this line: “What appeared to be two giant yellow vibrators in prison garb were prancing down the stairs.” Or something similar. Still makes me laugh.

I think you’ve forever tainted that show for me. I will crack up every time I see the colour blue next to a banana!

I put in a vote for Australia having it’s own FugMadness bracket.

    I actually love Missy’s…But then, I tend to love a futuristic pattern/cut…

    • Al

I like it too, but I’m definitely biased. Missy is amazing. Plus I think one of my favourite ARIA moments of ALL TIME was a few years ago, when she won the top award and was a little tipsy and jumped The Hoff who was there presenting her award.

I might’ve been to happy to see the Bananas in Pajamas. Ah childhood…..

The poor girl with the awful red wig and yellow frorror (my new word for frock-horror!)

Thy are not bananas. They are anamorphic yellow condoms.

You can’t really blame poor Rachael Leahcar, she is legally blind. The rest however, have no excuse!

I think Ellie Kelaart is really the Khaleesi, and she’s stalking around demanding, “WHERE ARE MY DRAGONS?!?!?!” (the resemblance is uncanny)

The rest of them are hilarious and wretched all in one.

This proves to me that we in Australia definitely have a different red carpet… “vibe” than the US or the UK. Seeing this next to slideshows of other events makes the difference really stand out. Most of these are pretty big stars in Oz (at least at the moment), but I think that none of these people would be particularly rich (not Kidman/Crowe types, obvs), so they can’t afford too much nonsense. They would be on a budget to match a CW star at a third tier event like a gallery opening.

THANKYOU!!! I had been trying to figure out who Sarah De Bono reminded me of!

Those are some seriously bad outfits! Even if they’re not the A-list of celebs down under (and I have no idea) surely they could find more flattering clothes. It makes me feel so much better about my own wardrobe.

HOW do you ladies not know who Kimbra is? In addition to being super-adorable, her fashion choices are… shall we say, eclectic. Enough that I’m surprised this is the first I’ve seen of her on this site.

I have no idea what Missy Higgins is wearing but she seems to be pulling it off better than anyone else would.

  24. Gretchen

KIMBRA IS NOT AUSTRALIAN. She’s from New Zealand.

But if she insists on being eaten by a frock that just scalped Red the fraggle we may just let the Australians have her!

I have a theory that Erin McNaught is actually wearing the SAME dress that JLo wore previously – replete with greasy food stains on the arm and torso. The Daily Mail had a few close ups and the fabric was all bobbled and pulled – giving off a definite pre-loved vibe!

    • Anita

It was probably sweat, it was WAY too hot here that night to wearing a long sleeved dress.

  27. Reese

Not gonna lie, I would wear the hell out of this.

  28. Joan

It’s like a parade of Fugi-tude. And IMHO, that green dress was completely inappropriate for J-Ho to wear to meet Kate and Wills – trashy.

Yeah, they may need their own Fug Madness Bracket. The yellow dress on a rope wasn’t that bad (no crazy patterns!), but man they like SHORT down there, don’t they? I know it’s summer time, but those are some seriously short skirts. Kristen Stewart would totally fit in.

I love Kimbra. Her music is pretty darned wonderful, although she has some extremely bold/crazy/eek! fashion choices. Her version of “Settle Down” at SXSW was incredible, and her pants are very stripe-a-crazy. Go familiarize yourself with her immediately.

Lanie Lane’s actually a pretty cool singer rather than a producer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lanie_lane), but agree she’s doing herself no favours at all here.

I’m Australian and I don’t even know who half those people were. I did like the oil stain on Erin McNaught’s dress she tried to remove though!
