Fug or Fab the Cover: Rihanna

fug-or-fab

This is the first time in a long time that I’ve looked at Vogue and thought the cover was compelling. The “I Love to Have Fun” pull-quote feels like it ought to be on the cover of Seventeen, but Rihanna is killing it in that dress and — as Tyra would say — she has mastered the art of the smize. In fact, I assume Tyra is reading this issue at home (eating nachos and wearing a caftan, because in my imagination that is how Tyra rolls off-hours) and talking about smizing RIGHT NOW.

But what do YOU think?

She looks like she’s vomiting in a field after an all-night bender in the clubs.

That is exactly what I thought. Even her eye makeup looks post-ralph. Ick.

totally. like she’s hiking up the skirt to get comfortable in front of the porta-toilet (not pictured.) however, great dress – and it’s all way more interesting than usual.

I’m a little wary of the wheatfield but the neutral color definitely makes the red dress stand out. Love the bright color on her lips too.

That isn’t wheat. It looks to be some sort of native prairie grass, which I find quite appropriate. The look on her face suggests she just took down some major game animal and will tear into the carcass as soon as the photoshoot is over.

As opposed to all of those people who hate to have fun!

For a fun-loving girl, this whole look is really severe, starting with the hair.

Just as dumb as declaration “I Love to Laugh!”, next to some celeb on a magazine cover. WHO hates to laugh?

She looks angry. And I wish she was standing so I could actually see the dress. It looks like it could be cute.

    • Jasmine

Me too. I wish I could see the cut of it so I know how much to covet it.

I also wish she didn’t have such a…. snarly face. Grr.

      • Jilly
        0

I actually kind of like the angry face. It’s a nice change from the sex kitten face we normally get from her. I like the idea of Rhiannon as a woman who might actually get angry. That said, it’s incongruous with the ‘I love to have fun’ quote.

This looks nothing like Rihanna. Where are her lady parts?

Seriously though, I love the dress, and I love the pixie cut, but the face looks too alien.

And I am not saying that it doesn’t look like her. I immediately recognized her.

It actually looks like the prototypical alien, with the extra wide eyes and the impossibly angular thin chin.

She has her strange moments, but I have never though Rihanna was an extra-terrestrial. Wait…yes, I have.

Never mind, this cover is perfect!

I agree completely that something about the styling of or expression on her face is alien-adjacent. I’m not trying to be snarky; the shadows on her cheekbones and under her jaw/chin, the translucent eyes with that eye makeup… Idk. It could also be the shape of her left eyebrow that’s giving us all mixed messages. One could argue that that eyebrow is the only thing making her face look angry; all else is fairly neutral.

So if we’re talking about the overall effect of the shot, I’m going to go with bold (which is good and interesting) but ultimately a little off-putting for me.

The dress and the haircut appear attractive.

I don’t think this is Rihanna at all. It is Jonathan Rhys Meyers in a frock! (He played Henry VIII in ‘The Tudors’). Look at the photo again and tell me that I’m wrong.

        • cynicalsmirk
          0

LOL!!! You’re absolutely right! Like Henry got caught playing in Anne Boleyn’s dressing room by Sir Thomas More, and is now ordering Thomas to keep his lip buttoned :)

I think she’s looking more and more like Grace Jones. Which is completely awesome!

Atleast one thing was photoshopped–specifically her missing Thug Lyfe knuckle tats….

What an uncomfortable post! The dress could be pretty, but I’m distracted by the fact that those legs were Photoshopped on.

The cover is compelling. So I give it a fab, I guess. I’ve also seen some low res shots of photos from the spread, and they look possibly kind of great as well. My problem is that she is one of those famous people who I dislike. I just find her antics and the stuff coming out of her mouth to be so lacking in merit that I would prefer her not to be on the cover of my fashion magazines, thanks. Regardless of how well done.

    Ennui! My favorite GRE word.

  10. Lynne

Yeah, pantsonfire, I’m with you. I can’t be objective about her. She’s very pretty. But I know way more about her personal life than I want to and am not a fan of her “music” so I feel nothing but distaste for this.

  11. Kara

I like what she’s wearing as well as her red lips. (I’ve been wearing red lipstick lately, although I’m still trying to find THE shade. Rihanna and I are not that far off complexion-wise so maybe I’ll just buy that, although since it’s Vogue it’s probably $50.) And I love the pixie. But she’s posed so weirdly! The arched back, the twisted shoulders, the wheat field … what is she supposed to be doing?

  12. sharon

I used to think she was beautiful but like others, with her behavior and statements over the last few years, now not so much. I think her eyes look mean and/or angry, not at all smiling. And I see skinny little ponytails sprouting from the top of her head thanks to VOGUE’s O and G…

Beautiful dress, but her face (her look) is bad.

  14. Kit

    I actually H-A-T-E this cover!

I mean, I love her dress and I love the composition of the photo – but her eyes are totally freaking me out and her normally very beautiful or sometimes elfin face is looking really masculine in this shot – it’s a very strange effect – so sure, yes, “compelling”. But attractive? No way.

    • pantsonfire
      0

Interesting. Usually people associate masculine faces with square, strong jaws and chins, which I don’t see here. So, just curious whether there is something specifically that is reading masculine to you?

      • Kit
        0

I think it’s her pugnacious expression and aggressive body-language. Dunno, exactly.

Usually she looks very pretty (despite her cray-cray clothes, hair and regretable romantic choices!)

        • pantsonfire
          0

Someone above said she is channeling Jonathan Rhys Meyers, which sounds impossible but is actually, amazingly true. I never would have said that I thought her face looked masculine in this shot (she has an inherently non-masculine face…all rounded forehead, small, pointed chin, narrow jaw, large eyes), but I hear where you are coming from. I mean, something is going on if she’s calling to mind JRM.

  15. TereLiz

The more I look at it, the sadder she looks to me. And she has way too much sad back story for me to feel comfortable with that. The interior pics don’t do much more to make her look empowered, just tired, angry, sad and haunted. Maybe I’m projecting my preconceived notions on her, but this photo shoot was just not my cup of tea.

ever since i saw this on the news stands I have been waiting for the Fug girls to *tear apart* her snarly-angry-face next to the “likes to have fun!” headline! how disappointing… other than the snarl, the cover is OK, i guess.

Rihanna is a waste of electrons.

Since I find Rihanna to be ugly on the inside, (and the outside), no amount of fashion fanciness is going to polish that turd enough for me. I am almost equally as off-put by the wreckage of once-venerable Vogue since Wintour’s reign of terror began.

In other scary-sad news, how come every time I click a link on a Celebuzz site, an internet application called “22195-9.html” downloads onto my computer?!!!!???!!??

I have no idea what that is, and haven’t experienced it myself. However, once again, if anything weird technical happens to any you PLEASE EMAIL US. It’s almost as if Vogue has somehow learned that there are people of color on our planet, and/or radio stations with “Z” in the name, and/or women who have actual butts! But then they park her in a field looking like she’s just rolled out of the kidnappers’ moving car as it went around a bend, and SITTING on the magnificent butt.

Ehhh… they got about halfway there.

    • Kit

      *meh*

More than half of those shots were way over sexualized – they literally made me uncomfortable to look at (a@@ pushed out in a doggy style position, lying on a hay stack with her legs spread and her dress pushed up as examples) – this is a complete and total stereotype of the way Black women are portrayed.

Vogue got exactly no where with this shoot in terms of people of colour, and in fact, went to it’s default (see also LeBron’s “gorilla” cover).

Her eyes speak to me. They say, “All I want to do is eat your brains.”

And the point at which your cover photo has caused JoCo lyrics to appear in RiRi’s eyes, you know something has gone horribly, horribly wrong.

  20. Karab

She looks really pissed off and not as if she likes to have fun at all.

  21. Vandalfan

All I can see is two black eyes and a swollen mouth on a belligerent, defensive victim of abuse ho has incredible beauty but no self esteem. All the talent, beauty, youth, and money in the world, and yet poor, fat, dumpy me feels so very sorry for her.

  22. JALPHX
    0

I love the color but why is she pulling the skirt up?? It’s like she can’t stand to have her thighs covered.

I agree with Vandalfan – I will always think of her as an abuse victim. I take it one step further, though – if she’s actually back together with CB, how long before he does it again? She may not want to be a role model, but as long as she’s making music and being on the cover of magazines, girls/women are taking note of what she does and thinking that it’s OK. Sad stuff.

  23. Jo

I think this is the nicest I’ve seen her look – but then her dress sense is whack. Pixie really suits her but I don’t like the backdrop of the photo itself and would have liked to see her standing. That quote they pulled from her interview is snooze worthy! Everyone likes to have fun!

  24. Mollsworth

Well as per usual Fug Nation and I don’t see eye to eye. I think she looks absolutely beautiful. The hair is great, I love the light smoky eye with the LIPS, and the dress! I love her expression, I’m not getting snarly or angry from it at ALL. I’d say she looks fierce except Tyra kind of ruined fierce as an adjective. But she does. Fierce and poised.

  25. Elizabeth

I am so effing sick of beautiful young women on magazine covers trying to look “sexy” or “smouldering” –or whatever the hell this is supposed to be. Ladies! There is more to being female than pink and sex! CLIMB OUT OF THAT TINY NARROW BOX SOCIETY IS TRYING TO SHOVE YOU IN. IT’S A MARKETING PLOY. That is all.

  26. Nora

I think her thighs look like hot dogs.

  27. Louisa

She looks great except the expression on her face is so, kinda mean looking. I suppose it’s supposed to read as fierce, but even allowing for that, then the pull quote insists she likes to have fun. She definitely does NOT look like she’s having fun here. She looks more like “take the damn picture already.”

  28. Tessa

I love the colors of the cover and the dress is cute, but that’s about it. The styling just makes her look like she woke up in a field with a bad hangover after having too much fun.

And a minor OT rant: if I see yet another cover story starting with “Fifty shades of” anything, I’m going to scream.really.loud. Enough of that drivel!!

I like the contrast between the neutral background and the red dress. But the photoshopping or whatever they did is terrible.

I think she looks exactly like that face on Chris Brown’s neck that he swears isn’t her. The one that is supposedly a Day of the Dead homage, not half a face of a beaten woman.

    What an angry picnic!

  32. Ladyblahblah

If magazines have to put her on their covers I wish they would at least not waste space with an interview. I tried to muddle through her Elle interview and it was nothing more than the interviewer sucking up to her, members of her entourage talking about how “amazing” she is, and her cursing and babbling about how she does what she wants.

  33. Chrissy
    0

It’s ok. I don’t like how angry her face looks and I will never understand why looking angry is supposed to be sexy. The dress is cute, but would look better if she were standing, I think.

  34. Isabel

She looks like driven game. The way she is hiking up the skirt of a semi-innocent dress and shies away at the same time (looking angrily at the pursuer, presumably us) makes this image pretty disturbing to me. Just as how she is being packaged in general.

I love fun? She’s had too much fun already. Poor kid.

Wait! What?? She looks a little hard in this photo.

Such a pretty girl. Such terrible life choices. And I fear that when the bloom is off her beauty, she won’t inspire the fan loyalty that’s kept Britney, another producer ‘s puppet, in the spotlight all these years.
