Fug or Fab: Lea Michele and Cory Monteith

fug-or-fab

Well, they’re definitely cute together, and they seem happy — and also as if they are using the same colorist.

But I’m not loving his tattered work boots. I’m sure it’s A Look that he quite fancies — the idea that he’s hip but also edgy, man –but the pieces together don’t seem to fit. I’m not sure that necktie plus vest plus untucked shirt plus grey jeans plus work boots from District 12 adds up to a finished ensemble, so much as it equals, “Aw, hellfire, I forgot about this thing and now I’m going to be super late. What’s clean?”

Let’s take on Lea next:

There is a nice idea here, but I don’t like that the plunging neck and the slitted skirt create dueling arrows that are pointing right at her groin. Also, I can’t escape the notion that I’m looking at the inside of somebody’s dining room linen cupboard.

Way harsh, Tai?

She: Dragface, STERNUM, wrinkles, and ankle-wrecking shoes. Her insurance agent must be gnawing his fingernails. Go home and put it away, Lea.
He: Piss stain and stankboots aside, he still looks better than her (of course).

One of the reasons I like this site is, while it is hilarious and pulls no punches about fashion, they don’t bully. Comments like yours are just mean and don’t belong here.

Is that Sarah Michelle Gellar looking pissed in the background of that first picture? Maybe she is mad about his work boots as well.

Haha yes it is. I get the feeling there’s some serious eye-rolling going on behind the sunglasses from SMG

I don’t think it’s SMG because she’s currently sporting a pretty large baby belly & the woman above most definitely is not. They could totally be twins though!

    • Amberoni13
      0

Identical twins – holy Ringer, Batman! Seriously, though, that top is the kind I wore when I didn’t want to look 10 months preg and you would be surprised how forgiving it could be. Even the height seems dead on (because SMG and Lea M are both wee little things). She does have the tiny mouthed pissed look to her.

Also, her stylist really should have taken a steamer to that piece of fabric!!!!

His outfit is just plain GROSS. Who does that anymore?? On a red carpet?? HELLOOOOOO

I’d actually be okay with his outfit if he just lost the tie, the rest is so informal so why add a tie?

This brings me back to a fashion rule I heard in my youth: Legs OR boobs, not both (or something to that effect). Of course, back then, it meant not wearing your tube top with your mini skirt, but I think the same idea applies here.

If the dress was just short it might work, but I’ve never thought matching your hair to your hemline was a good idea

I don’t love her outfit, but I do love that she’s smiling in the first picture. Pretty bangs and nice legs, so overall I’d say B to B-. And yes – I also think it would be better if she’d followed the boobs or legs rule.

    • Sandra
      0

That looks less like a smile and more like gritted teeth to me; like she wants to rip his throat out for turning up dressed like that, but knows the cameras are on her.

  9. Piglet the Pooh

Looks like the Boobs Legsly axiom (boobs, or legs, but not both) should be applied here. It’s really quite simple.

I’ll even throw a sister a rope: This dress is much more flattering to your legs than it is to your boobs. Nothing against them, but the top half is just a wee bit too Linda Ronstadt 1976 to be taken seriously.

Guess some designers really could not care less anymore, if women are leaving the house with boobs and/or cooch hanging out. Screw them.

I have a nighty that looks exactly like Lea’s dress. Of course it’s the type that isnt really meant for sleeping because it ends up bunched around my neck with my boobs falling out the v-neck but that doesnt mean it’s meant for the red carpet either.

can we please talk about his haircut which looks like he fell asleep against a pair of clippers?

  15. Alanna S

One or the other. Deep V neck or super high skirt slit. Not both.
I don’t need the anxiety of not knowing which part of her I might accidentally see first.

  16. Neil

What’s the point of even wearing shoes like this? There’s absolutely nothing to them.

Of course, the same could be said about the dress, I guess.

      • Helen
        0

Thirding the tired. Cory’s just channelling Blake Shelton; there are worse things.

Lea, however, needs to stop trying to be something she’s simply not.

  18. E

You missed the shot during the show when she sat down & her boobs fell out because the neckline wasn’t taped down. The only reason there wasn’t a full on nip flash was because her hair was covering her up somewhat.

Cory needs to fire his stylist. He looks like he dragged some leftovers out of the laundry basket, sniffed them & said “what the hey”.

  19. Kara

They look like they’re at two different events. She’s all fancy and he looks like he was working on his car, realized he had a thing to go to, and threw on a vest in an attempt to “dress up.”

    • Anita
      0

Thank you. Of course, this makes them no different than most non-celeb couples out on dates; the woman is dressed to impress (though I’m unimpressed by that particular dress), and the guy looks like he grabbed the least stinky thing from the pile of not quite clean clothes in the corner.

  20. jean
    0

And her hair! I’m so tired of excessively long hair that looks fake (and I have no idea if hers is authentic or fake, but if it looks fake, that’s bad!). Except for his shoes, he seemed to match everyone else much better than she did. She seems overdressed.

    • Cath
      0

Oh yes, I SO agree, the fake hair is terrible. Seriously, it’s sad that most people don’t even see it anymore. It’s terrible. All those stars with Barbie hair… Sigh. The dress (Armani!) is hurting my eyes. She’s also too petite to carry that off, it’s dragging her down.

  21. Valentina
    0

The dress is kind of a desperate attempt to get attention. Doesn’t matter if you look at her boobs, her legs, the hemline or just wonder what fabric it is, you can’t avoid looking at her.

  22. gryt
    0

Wow, way harsh… At least she’s not standing there like some ridiculous doll with her feet crossed (“gotta-pee!”), she looks like she’s enjoying herself, like she actually wants to be there, she dressed up, go her hair done… Geez people.

This is just like everything else she wears. It’s so boring. Remember this?: http://gofugyourself.com/grammys_well-played_lea_michele2010-02-2010

    What happened, Lea?

    • Helen
      0

OMG that was SO CUTE. She looked great! I’m so used to her looking like, well, this, now, I’d forgotten all about it.

She needs to get that stylist back!

    • Fawn

Not only is that navy dress adorable, but look at her hair. So shiny! So real! She could use a bit of a make-under.

  24. Kris

This would have been fine if the neckline had just been a bit higher!

I could have SWORN that was SMG next to her!!!! Doppleganger for sure!

  25. Jules Winfield

She really doesn’t have the assets to pull off that kind of dress. Completely unflattering, and it looks about five sizes too big.

    • Kiti

      ^this

My first thought was that the dress would look better on a fuller figure. Lea Michele is too tiny to carry it off.

My second thought is that while the outfit on Cory Monteith is terrible, at least he looks showered and shaved, which puts him ahead of many men we see photographed on the red carpet. It’s sad that basic hygiene is now considered optional by so many.

  26. sharmania

As TLo would say: Of course.

  27. Trent

FUG to both. HE is 30 years old, not 18, and it wouldn’t have killed him to wear a suit or at least a sportcoat with those jeans (and decent shoes), especially when his girlfriend is dressed like that. SHE is wearing a typically skanky neckline that is almost to her navel and a bottom half better suited to DWTS.

However, looking at everyone else on this red carpet, I have no idea whose outfit is more appropriate for this event…

There are some shades of Hola Lovers to Lea’s getup here. Also, am I the only one that sometimes forgets Glee is still a thing?

  29. Crystal

    Put them thighs away.

  30. Evie

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I like and respect her for her talent, but she is completely in denial about her looks. You’re not a 6′ tall swimwear model, Lea! Work with what you’ve got and you’ll be fine then (although that dress looks somewhat too cheap for anyone to pull it off).

At this point, mean as it may be, I’m starting to wonder if she has some kind of attention disorder.

  31. Evalyn

The Priscilla Curtins from my mother’s living room. She always looks like she’s trying to look like Penelope Cruz.

His boots look like large versions of button up baby shoes.

  32. cynic
    0

I guess I’m in a minority of one because I kind of like his look.

She looks like she’s wearing the sort of nightie you buy for your wedding night, knowing full well you’re going to pay hundreds of dollars for something you’re only going to wear for about 30 seconds before it gets ripped off and tossed in the corner. It would have been cuter if the hem had been straight, and just above the knee, and the neckline had only ‘plunged’ to a spot a couple inches about the boobs. And it needs to be a different colour because right now it looks grey, like she washed it with her jeans or something.

  33. witjunkie

I kind of like this, because I like soft floaty loose ruffles. I don’t like acres of sternum. But she’s little and for some reason it doesn’t look as bad as it should, to my eye, anyway.

  34. Cecily

I actually saw another photo from this event with the two of them together, and her boob had actually come OUT of her dress. It was quite liberally covered by her hair, so it wasn’t NSFW or anything (or even that noticable) but it had definitely made a successful run for it. But no one has apparently noticed!! LOOK AT THE MAIN PHOTO:

Heh. Because of the get up, I mistook Cory for Matthew Morrison in character as Mr Schue, the undying fan of vests on the show.

The flounces of hair rhyme with the thigh curtains to create a head-to-toe cascade of foofery. It looks oppressive. The adjective “load-bearing” comes to mind.

Admittedly I’ve never seen Glee and all I know about Lea Michelle is what I’ve seen on this site. However, I’ve always sensed something a little desperate about her presentation. Only faded starlets decades older than she is should look like she’s trying so hard. I wish she’d stop – she’d look a lot better.

  39. Sajorina

I like his look, it’s different; unlike her, who looks exactly the same every freaking time I see her and it’s boring me to death! At least his outfit is interesting and I love those boots! I’ll FAB him & FUG her!

  40. cilla
    0

He (or someone) has spent a lot of time putting that look together – as much as he’d have us believe it was just stuff lying at the bottom of the wardrobe (closet). I live in Italy and have seen those and many other shoe/boot variations in the shops her over the last year. And believe me… as much as they look like they were at the bottom of the shoe box by the back door… those scuffed, broken down, toe curled babies don’t come cheap… at all.

  41. Liz

I know that the general idea is that it’s better to be overdressed, but she’s consistently so overdressed! I look at the pictures of Olivia Munn and Kristen Bell and wonder what the hell Lea and her stylist were thinking – actually, I think they just work with the same idea regardless of what the event is, she always seems to be wearing the same thing.
It doesn’t help that her Glee character drove me from the show and I just plain old don’t like her anymore.

  42. I think
    0

She looks really beautiful facially, but that dress is just fug. She definitely needs to fire her stylist whoever it is, because they are obviously not serving her well at all. I feel like I’ve seen a million versions of this exact same dress on her.

I don’t know who the guy she’s with it, but he needs to wear different shaped jeans, because those are not flattering.

Is Lea not the new Boobs Legsly?

  44. Franziska
    0

I quite like the dress… it’s summery and playful but the cleavage bit is a bit too open for my liking. But looking at both of them at the same time it makes me think that Lea is either overdressed or Cory is under dressed.

  45. Erin
    0

I don’t mind the idea of this, but the fabric reminds me of the stuff they use on project runway to create the pattern before making it in the nice fabric. and like it would stretch out and get wrinkly as soon as you sat down. I do think the soft, white, romantic ruffles is a nice idea for a summer event.

  46. Celeste

    Ugh–I find her insufferable.

I always think that plunging necklines and super high skirt slits are just desparate. But those aren’t the things that I hate most about this dress. It’s the seaming at the waist and front. It looks cheaply made and fits poorly. I need to repeat this. It looks of-the-rack cheap. Like something from Hot Topic.
