Fug or Fab: Jennifer Lawrence

fug-or-fab

It wasn’t until the fourth Hunger Games event that Jennifer Lawrence went literal as the Girl On Fire. Well, okay, not literal. She did not show up on fire, and she did not — to my knowledge — pull a Cheno and catch her hair extensions aflame in a bathroom candle aflame while vomiting. So let’s say she went symbolic. With the help of Marchesa, of course. Because if you ever want to look like a burning effigy of yourself, that’s probably where you turn.

The hilarious thing about this is, I decided to put it up to a vote because although it’s dramatic, I’m not quite sure if it’s my thing. And then I realized we’d featured this in our slideshow from the Fall 2012 runway show, at which time I said, “Pretty idea, but my guess is that when Ashley Greene or whoever wears this I will still put it up for a vote and then announce it’s not my thing.” HA. At least I’m consistent?

So let's do this thing. First, Big Red:

LOL. A new hair/makeup artist, at least. I’m not digging her head styling in either of these.

The zipper dress is so so so so close.

When I look at the red dress, I keep seeing a medical book diagram of the body’s muscles.

Exactly. It doesn’t look like flames. It looks like Heidi Klum’s most recent raw body Halloween costume.

The red dress reminds me of the “Bodies” exhibit that has been traveling around the states–the one where they took actual humanbodies and petrified them so they could peel back the layers and make an exhibit of them. In other words, I keep thinking I see her pec muscles. And that is creepy.

Ha! That’s exactly what I was thinking. She looks like a Body Worlds exhibit.

that red dress is total fug besides being unflattering cut for her body. The black one was pretty okay from the back (although the back and the shoes were giving my Jennifer Aniston [not that that's a bad thing - like her or not, she has an amazing body and style that goes well with it and her personality]); but from the front it was fug.

    Overall – fug.

everything about the red ensemble is goofy, in my opinion.

The silly-string Marchesa is bad enough, but then she had to go and add the stripper platforms to it. Ugh.

I’d love the balck dress if she had a little support. Love the zipper motif.

I like the black dress, and it counts as a win for me because I think her hair and makeup is also fantastic.

Is it just me or did this girl seem….I don’t know…prettier. Before these Hunger Games events. What does that say about the clothes? Before you even get to deconstruct whether the clothes are working or not, your overall sense is that she’s not looking as great as she did at the SAG awards or the People’s Choice Awards. I don’t know, it’s just weird. Every time I see her at these events, I think, is that her? Is she the same one? There are lots of Jennifers…

I’m with you on barely being able to take in the clothes. Something about her skin color/makeup or SOMETHING is just….weird. The black dress is the first time I have even recognized her face on this tour.

Yeah, I’ve been thinking the same thing. She doesn’t look that great, and she doesn’t look a whole like who we see in the trailers or how I recall her before (without actually looking at the archive b/c I’m lazy). So far all I’ve got is she’s often shiny and the bangs aren’t working (the hair with the red dress is just so blah). Maybe with all the attention she’s anxious, and it comes out in that school yearbook smile?

I’m with Softwear on this. Somehow she’s just seemed so…generic bleached blonde teen throughout this whole tour, as opposed to Elizabeth Banks, who has been SMOKIN’. Maybe it’s her youth, but JLaw just isn’t ready for overly sexy dresses like the black one yet. She can’t pull them off. She has the body but not the , you know?

I don’t love the Marchesa but it fits her well. I love the black dress but the fit seems off. Which means I give both looks a “meh.”

I like the red one. It’s different. In a good way. Liked the black one from the back but really not so much from the front. I decided I love HER after I read an article where they asked her about how much she had to work out to get in shape for the role of Katniss. She said, A LOT. And she did it because she had to and while she likes to be in shape, when she reads about women who say they love to work out and can’t wait to get to the gym, she wants to punch them in the face. HA! (I paraphrased the first part of that but the punch them in the face is a direct quote. I love the realism.)

In an interview around the time of Winter’s Bone, she said something like, “I can eat whatever I want because I do independent movies.” Obviously it’s not true anymore, but I love that candor.

it’s like Anne Hathaway saying that in Hollywood, she’s type-cast as a “normal” girl and she knows that’s code for fat, but says she doesn’t care – she’d rather eat bread. lol

I don’t like the hair she had with the black dress. At all. It ruined the ensemble for me.

I think she really identifies with K.Stew now, which…I dunno girl, you’ve got a looong way to go there. It’s almost like she’s trying to strike the edgy, Purposeful Fug vibe that K.Stew has mastered. I’m not sure it’s working.

I vote for option 4: Not on Her. I dig the red one but the color washes her out, and that, combined with her relentless orange tan, is making her look dull. I’d love to see it on someone with Catherine Zeta Jones’ coloring and a sparkling sense of fun, because then I think it would look like fireworks!

I dont love the red, or the front of the black but the back of the black is great.

And HI-FIVE on the Red reference. She was always the superior Fraggle.

I’ll take the hair from #1 and send the dress #2 to a tailor to fix the bodice fit, and there ya go.

Her hair is terrible. Seriously awful bad teenager no one has cut it in 6 months terrible. If she had a better lid in BOTH photos, I think both dresses would look better. Those frozen smiles are not helping her cause either. And the shoes with the red one are ick. Seriously cut off her head and her feet and I can get on board with Big Red for sure. Even the black one would be fine without boob wrangling if her head wasn’t ruining it. And she is a gorgeous girl so please don’t think I am trying to say she is ugly. It’s just those photos are not flattering at ALL. Happens to the best of us.

I like the idea of the red one, but not the execution. If it were a solid color instead of making her look as if she has been fileted, I would love it.

I’d be more on board if only she were wearing shoes in a different color!

Her look is California beach babe and she should work that instead of fighting against it (yes, I know she’s from Kentucky, just talking about her looks). She needs simple gowns that accentuate that gorgeous figure, and yes, better hair and make-up. I think in all the ones with the bangs and the tendrils framing her face she’s actually got an intricate, Katniss-esque braid going on in the back, but it’s not working from the front.

Calvin Klein might be a good choice for her, maybe Posh (although her dresses tend to be designed for stick figures, like herself). Even some Elie Saab gowns could work if she stays away from the super-intricate ones. Other suggestions?

The red dress doesn’t scream fire to me so much as it screams inside-out body or muscle fibers or something. I can’t quite place my finger on it, but I’m definitely not in love. The black one is much better, but still not great.

I really don’t like her hair with either outfit. It seems too twee with the red dress (and her bangs need a wrangler– I sympathize) and it seems too severe with the black dress.

    • Esmom

Yes, her bangs definitely need a wrangler. To kep the curling iron away from them, if nothing else.

Every time I think I want to cut my bangs I force myself to think of the pain that would be involved in growing them back out again. Stops me every time.

Must’ve missed these. Thank you for bringing up how terrible the fringe is! Hopefully some stylist will realize this… psst, Cinna…

The shoes. Does she have a Payless deal or something? Because otherwise I cannot account for them.*

    *Yes, that’s a RWAV reference.

Both are just “ok” but the smile makes it better. I love that she seems to enjoy herself and not take everything so seriously.

That dress is like a diagram of the human muscular system.

She’s such a good looking young woman that it pains me to say she’s not a smiler. Every time I see a pic of her smiling it looks weird to me. Like someone’s poked her with a fork and growled, “now, smile”.

I think she does better when she’s caught candid, or she relaxes first.

I think she does better when it’s 2011. We need to go back there. She almost looks older and more composed, how is that possible?

I may not have minded the first one so much in another color (black, maybe?) but as is it reminds me of the Bodyworlds exhibit.

You CAN’T wear a bra with that black dress. She needed Joanna Coles with her when she was trying it on. “It’s lovely, but how do you wear a BRAR with it?”

The red I can’t just because I can’t stand Marchesa. The black one I would have loved if the zipper went up to mid back with an asymetrical v back. It would have taken care of the twisted fabric around her middle.

Can we please just talk about how much we are NOT enjoying that fringe? Please? Anyone?

She looks dishy in the black, but I don’t want to think how the mega-zipper detail feels on bare skin. I bought a sweater last fall with (non-functional) zipper trim, and it is not comfortable to brush over it.

I hate the red dress… It is seriously FUG! And, the shoes & hairdo don’t help! But, at least she’s smiling! I LOVE THE 2nd DRESS!!! She looks AMAZING in it… Girl’s body is bangin’! I understand about the boobs needing some support, but she’s young enough, so they look fine! Plus, her hair, makeup and smile are GORGEOUS!

I keep thinking that she has red feather fans over her boobs in Red Dress. Also, there appears to be an outline of a teddy bear on her tummy. Not a “fan” (pun intended) of Big Red!

I just can’t get over how pretty she looks in the Hunger Games and how…meh she looks not in the Hunger Games. I think she really just needs to stay brunette, for starters, and flaunt the fact that she’s got a super athletic body (athletic bodies don’t need stripper shoes. they stand on their own). Also, she needs some help with the eye makeup, because every time she’s not in a studio shot she looks like she’s in the seventh grade and is JUST LEARNING how to put on eyeshadow. Its heartbreaking.
