Fug or Fab: Gwyneth Paltrow

fug-or-fab

Mostly, I think she’s pulling this off. Oh, Gwyneth. What CAN’T you do? Other than write a self-aware weekly newsletter, obviously.

What do you think?

i like both outfits. but the first dress is too short. she’s got great legs, yes, but a skirt that short makes one self-conscious when moving around. (or at least should).

Yep, I agree, too short. She is in fantastic shape and I think short skirts are okay over “a certain age” if you look great but there is a hemline that can be crossed and Ms. Paltrow has crossed it.

That orange dress IS too small and way too short. And a bit trying too hard for a woman of 40.

Agree, the dress is too small. Also, her face seems different.

She looks like Julie Bowen in the first picture…

I noticed her face last week! Something about her eyes (?) is taking my attention away from her see-through plastic shoes and too short, too tight dress. Just because you can zip it doesn’t mean it flatters.

I agree–it’s not by much, but it definitely is too small. Love the color and cut, though, and I seriously envy her toned legs.

The first dress is a little small, yes, and short. Up a size, and lengthen it as little as just a couple of inches, and it’d be fine IMO.

Hate the shoes. Cheap, tacky, awful.

Hate the leather dress (on her). It could be gorgeous on the right person, but on Paltrow it both overwhelms and clashes.

Ditto, Lindy. I am so tired of 40ish women in Hollywood wearing too-short, too-tight, too-young clothes to prove they’ve still Got It. She’s gorgeous obviously, but her beauty comes through much more when she’s wearing something stylish and classy, instead of something that screams, LOOK AT MY LEGS. MY TRAINER + MY GENES = PURE GOLD.

Orange is a bit too short, leather is bit too long. Can we ever be satisfied? Pretty close to fab, definitely not fug.

I actually think both dresses are conceptually awesome but both are also too small.

That leather dress is what Kate Middleton would wear if she was a Hell’s Angel.

Gasp! Now I know who I would like to see wearing the leather! Kate Beckinsale.

GOOD CALL. I also happen to fully love the orange one, but it could do with an extra inch on the hemline. The colour is gorgeous though.

Love the orange dress, and if I had her bod, I’d rock a size smallish. The black leather? No. The skirt looks heavy and dowdy – something is off.

I like them both, but my feet ache just looking at those heels! If I had one complaint, maaaaybe the orange dress is a hair too small. She doesn’t look smashed in though, so bonus points for that.

Is she turning into Claire Danes or the other way round? I kind of love Gwyneth P. She always looks like she’s trying really really hard.

Love the orange dress and don’t think it is too short. 40 is not 80 folks! However, there is something weird about the fit around her midsection, can’t put my finger on it. Don’t hate the black but don’t love it either. I like the top, but not the skirt part.

I think the issue might be that G. doesn’t have the teeniest waist and is a bit long-torso-ed, and this can screw with proportions. Shift dresses are a good idea if they loosely skim, but these are a bit nipped in, and can make her look boxy. Less stiff fabric and a bit more room to move, and she’d look better.

      Great gams, though!

I was just thinking the waist needed to be lowered, and your post pinpointed why…her torso is extra long.

    • Jessica

Yeah, I don’t have a problem with the length myself, I just think it looks a little snug.

I think the dress probably fit in the fitting room where you stands with your shoulders thrown back and your hands on your hips. And then real life happens. The dress doesn’t look like it stretches ATALL. Makes the dress look unforgiving around her hips, like it’s all wrinkled pulling at the hem when she sits because the skirt wants to hike way up. And it’s getting wedged in her armpits and needs a good tug at both sleeves.

Trace, will you please come to every single dressing room with me between now and forever? You can save me a whole lot of heartbreak. And money. But mostly heartbreak.

I’m not mad at any of it but I think she’s kind of in a transition stage, sartorially speaking. Like what has always worked maybe isn’t working like it used to, but now she’s not sure in which direction to go. She needs to leave her eye liner alone and bypass the SJP highway for sure.

The orange would be great if it fit properly. The shoes are hideous. I don’t like leather dresses to begin with, so I’m probably not a fair judge of the black.

Has she had her pinkie toe removed? Or is the shoe just making it curl under? Either way, eek!

I like both of these well enough but neither of them are bowling me over. They’re passable. I mean for clothes that cost more than my car.

I actually don’t have a problem with either. Sure, orange is short, but she’s also 10 feet tall so I have a feeling that’s not entirely all the dress’s fault. And unlike some too-short dresses other Hollywood starlets are running around in, this one doesn’t look trashily (that’s a word now) short, youknowwhatImean? It just reminds me of a very mod kind of cut.

    • Helen

Agreed, the orange dress isn’t THAT sort of short. It’s just a little awkward. And ringthing makes a good point about the transition stage we almost all have at a certain age, when the clothes we used to wear don’t quite work anymore but we’re not sure yet what does, now.

      I do love the color!

is this real leather? i thought she were vegan

Both dresses need better tailoring. Shorter leather skirt, slightly less midriff boning, lengthen orange dress, loosen sleeves. Those are cruel shoes, in every sense of the word. .

Glancing at it from the waist up, before I scrolled down, I momentarily thought this was Ann Romney. The color of the dress and the way her arms are held is classic Ann.

I don’t think the first dress is too small, but it’s little too short. She’s got a great body, but I feel like the hemline needs to be just a smidge longer. I don’t know… the more I look at it the more I like it, so maybe it doesn’t matter.

    Those shoes are terrifying.

  22. Rosa

I don’t like the shoes at all. Both dresses are meh. Mostly she just annoys me. And the name of her new perfume, could that BE any more pretentious? Much like GOOP herself?

  23. Elle

The orange dress is too short and does not fit correctly. As for the black dress: you wouldn’t think leather could be dowdy but Goop has achieved it. This woman really does have a wide range just not the good kind-more like the vast expanse of annoying.

My 2 cents: Both dresses are much too tight. She looks a bit like Claire Danes in the orange dress, but Claire never seems to be trying too hard.

Haaaaaate the shoes. I don’t want to see squashed tootsies, ever. Ever ever ever.

Plastic shoes: I always wonder at what point in the evening they start to steam up.

  27. Nancy

The orange dress is too short. It’d be classier just a smidge longer.

The shoes irk me. It looks painful where I can see the side of her foot smushing against the plastic.

I thought she looked like Claire Danes in the last shot. But it probably should be the other way around since Claire Danes hasn’t always been so blonde.

Ah she has definitely had work done.

I like the leather dress, too. It’s just ladylike enough in cut to balance the masculinity of the material. I think the orange dress would look nicer if it was a few inches longer. Gwyneth is one of those people who is extremely toned and muscular, without an inch of superfluous fat on her body, and I think she needs softening.

I honestly never thought I’d live to see the day when a GFY post gave love to plastic shoes with foot-smoosh. Are you sure it’s not April Fools Day?

    Those things are NASTY.

Her legs look cramazing – way better than those of starlets 20 years her junior.

Ugh. That smug, self-satisfied grin of hers ruins everything she puts on.

Meh on all of Paltrow’s things. And she definitely needs to go up a size on the red.

  34. Lo

Maybe a bit snug, causing the wrinkles, but too short? No. If she can rock it with her legs, she should rock it with no qualms. I also don’t think it looks “unclassy.” It’s long-sleeved and high cut, so it’s balanced. Must say this: age ain’t no thing when your legs look like this, and I don’t understand the focus on it in these comments. Her blog is lame, and people love to hate on her for that, yes, but let’s not conflate that with how she looks, which is much better than a LOT of other folks in other posts!

I like the idea of the orange dress on her, but not the actual dress. It almost looks baby-bumpish. Shoes look painful. And yes, it looks like she had some work done on her face.
