Fug or Fab: Emma Stone

fug-or-fab

Heather and I played hooky the other day and went to see Crazy Stupid Love and dear God is Emma Stone charming in that movie.  I fell in love with her all over again. I sort of wished the whole movie had just been her and Ryan Gosling flirting and having adventures. She is just so relatable and adorable and funny.

I love her. But I don’t know how much I love this. The shoes are major, and I like the color IN THEORY, although on her I think it skews a little bit sickly-making. And I find the obi belt-waist belted with ANOTHER belt a little bit…overly belted? I mean, we’re not locked in the mid-section department of Units here.

Charming?

She looks like she got stuck to the big roll of parcel-wrapping paper they have at UPS. And then tied somebody’s boot-lace around her waist. Lovin’ the return to red hair, though.

I very well could be wrong (and please correct me if I am), but isn’t an obi supposed to have a tie around it? Traditionally, I mean?

That said, the color here is just… meh.

I wouldn’t call that an Obi either, but the second belt looks exactly like a shoelace, Sandra’s right! Haha…ew. I don’t hate this dress, in fact I think it has some serious potential, it just feels…unfinished? And at the risk of sounding like a Grandmama, am I alone in thinking that the collar needs a good iron?

I like this dress quite a lot in its D&G runway look, with the black belt wrapped several times and tied with a small bow instead of left sloppily trailing as ES has it here. The bodice, too, looks like it’s meant to stay spread wide open, with the shoulders of the dress dripping off the wearer’s shoulders. It doesn’t really work on her arms as she has it here, but I suppose it takes a lot of boob-tape to make it work, regardless. What also doesn’t work is the color with her skin tone. Even with her warm coppery hair, silver might work better for her than gold.

Obi just means “belt” in Japanese, could be like the belts they wear on karate uniforms or the elaborate ones they wear over kimonos or any of a number of other things.

@eee, Yes they do (especially fancy kimono ones) so that doesn’t bother me, and I actually probably wouldn’t even have noticed it if Jessica hadn’t mentioned it. The dress itself isn’t doing much for me, though, but I can’t put my finger on why. Maybe her posture? The color (ew)? The neckline?

Oh, interesting! You learn something new every day.

I like the fabric of the dress a lot. The pleating and the slitting and the belting would look less fussy with a fabric that doesn’t cry out for a simpler design. I also like the color of it, a burnished gold. This is a dress whose merits are appreciable in closeup, but lost in RC-distance photos. By contrast, the shoes ROCK from a distance, but look kind of cheap in the closeup. Oh well. M-Score B+, with demerits for the limp black bow and the hunched posture.

Even with two belts, that dress makes it look as if she has no waist.

I think she looks great. Love that color on her.

I loved this at another photo, and now that I see the fabric is not plain satin but Nifty and kind of quilted like a packing blanket, I love it even more.

My great grandma had parlor chairs in that exact color and fabric. Then again, my great Grandma was a badass and I do love Emma so I guess I just really don’t know.

    LMAO @ Stefanie’s comment.

Also, I’m not loving the dress but those shoes are ferosh.

I don’t love the dress, but I’m with you on this, Jessica: I loved her so much in that movie that I feel like I could forgive her almost anything.

I also saw Crazy, Stupid Love last weekend, and you’re right, it and Emma are amazing. This dress… meh. You’re right about it making her look sickly. Us pale folk have to be careful about those yellowy green hues.

I like the dress, and I like her, but I’m a little split on whether or not I think mustard is a good color for her skin tone. I’m similarly pale, and I have to be very careful with yellows. I don’t know if this quite cuts it for her since it has no other color to offset the hue.

i would pay to watch jacob and hannah read the phonebook to each othet..the gos will find a thousand ways to make that all kinda of sexy..and the massage chair scene was too cute for words..the dress,i love..although i could be biased since ive loved her ever since zombieland!

I love this dress on Emma : it’s actually designed by Roland Mouret, from his Fall 2011 collection (had to check it out on Style.com after seeing Emma’s picture).

It’s got a relaxed cheongsam feel, so the belting seems in keeping. But the clutch is my favourite part of this look : it’s one of Alexander McQueen’s knuckleduster designs.

I voted yes her, no dress, but the more I look at it, the more it IS charming me. I’m sure what put me off was the color, it’s ALMOST ok on her but just misses, in my opinion…and yet I don’t think I would like the dress as much in any other color.

Great dress. Great shoes. Great girl. Bad photo … any other shots of this dress?

I think she’s adorable and charming to the max. This dress looks like a bed sheet from a wedding registry draped over her cute little figure. Stop it, Emma. It’s not a kimono, it’s a fugmono.

God, I loved Units. Pretty much my entire 6th grade wardrobe was from there.

The dress is fine. Her posture reminds me of Miley “The Hunchback” Cyrus. She is a pretty girl and I hope the photog just caught her at the wrong moment.

Hubby and I thought the SAME THING about that movie!

Love her, like the dress. would like it more in a color that flattered her skin tone more.

I guess I’m the only one that likes the color on her. As a fellow redhead, I love the pea-greens, mustards, etc. I don’t mind that they make me look pale – I AM pale!

Were it knee-length, I think I’d like it.

THAT MOVIE. THEIR CHEMISTRY. Seriously, they should make a TV series of Stone and Gosling flirting with each other and put it on every night. I’d never get tired of it. Adorable.
