Fug or Fab: Anne Hathaway

fug-or-fab

Man, she occupies so much real estate on this site lately that we should start collecting rent.

I want to hear the people sing:

This is…fine. Her face and hair are wonderful. I like that she doesn’t seem to be trying so very hard with this dress, but I still don’t know that it’s a great dress for her, specifically. I mean, I know it’s possible for her to find great dresses that just scream HATHAWAY — the dresses she wore hosting the Oscars are great examples (that white Givenchy is, to this day, in my top three dresses ever). But here, again, I find this a little too…unstructrued for her particular figure. Things can feel a little droopy on her, and such is the case here. Also, yes, needs to be a little shorter.

The back is lovely but she looks mostly unsupported in the front. On top of being very skinny looking. I remember the days not too long ago when she wasn’t that bony. Is it the whole Les Miz thing? On the other hand, her hair and face seem increasingly gorgeous to me.

Yea, the press is kind of making a big deal that she lost like 25 pounds or something to play the Les Miz role, when she was already pretty slimmed down from playing Catwoman.

Hey, I remember months of nothing by Emma Watson during the dessicated times around Spiderman. She looks fine – totally agree with pantsonfire. It could be greater, but for fuck’s sake – she must be bored out of her mind by now having to plug this thing.

Major plus points on including Hugh Jackman in pics – it does look like they are having fun. Also – Matt Lauer is a HUGE TOOL. Anne came out smelling like a rose. And still, why not even the smallest of G-strings?

      Duh. Emma Stone, of course.

Please don’t go there. Regardless of what she was or wasn’t wearing, the photographers didn’t have to take those pictures, didn’t have to sell those pictures, and the editors didn’t have to buy or publish them. Even though she is a public figure, she is a human being and decent people don’t take advantage of other people’s vulnerable moments.

Wasn’t there a time when a “decent” actress, fully aware that she would be photographed awkwardly exiting a limo, would be sure to wear an essential called “underpants”? I mean, please.

You are so right about Lauer — she handled his oh-so-faux concern about her “wardrobe malfunction” and her weight perfectly. Someone brought up this young woman very well.

Agree on shortening it some, and also, I’d widen/strengthen the straps a bit. Looking at them as they are, I fear the chain will be broken. Maybe shorten those, too, a wee bit, so that the top sits just about half an inch higher on the chest.

And is it just me, or is this crying out for a matching wrap? Something sheer-ish, just draped over the shoulder/upper arm. I know, that would hide some of the gorgeous back, but she could take it off and put it back on very easily for different photos.

Thumbs up on the wrap idea.

This is the new ‘chic’ length, which is a fail for me. It makes most women look stumpy with big calves.

I completely agree re the straps, making them both wider and shorter–that is a spot on idea. That would definitely help, as would perhaps a more supportive undergarment. That said, I still don’t really think the blouson style is the best for Anne (though it’s a style I actually tend to like a lot…it’s just not for everybody).

Not to quibble – no one loves pedicures more than I – but it looks like at least her right foot has had a French pedicure???

I’m OK with the shoes – they are sort of wispy and less structured, like the dress.

But she does look a bit droopy and moulty. And what’s with the back? Is it a bead curtain over bare skin? (not judging here, just want to know)

OTOH, she had me at SEQUINS.

I, too, think I spot a pedicure. Maybe French, maybe just pale flesh-pink, but I do think I see it.

I love her in this! Colors are great on her, her makeup looks good, and, Anne, see how much more graceful and natural it looks when you put your hand on your hip, not high on your waist?

I don’t like the pattern of the sparkles. Looks sort of like she threw up sequins.

Hi Hugh Jackman! I love you. If you took a few months off and learned how to be a shoe cobbler (like Daniel-Day Lewis, who I also love but am very scared of) then you would be my perfect dream man.

Ann looks good too, sideswept bangs make the haircut more palatable to me.

The sequin pattern on the front of the skirt is … not graceful.

It’s as though first glue, then sequins were spilled on her lap.

(What’s this popout – “Get the Look sponsored by Best Buy”?? Well done, BBY!!!!)

Before commenting on the outfit, can I just say that I love you for including Les Mis quotes in each post about the cast of this movie? (which I’m patiently waiting for…oh, who am I kidding, why isn’t it here yet oh God on high whyyyyyy??? Ok, sorry).

    Yes, the outifit.
I don’t dislike it, but there’s something weird about its shape: those tiny straps and overall bagginess of the top don’t seem to work well with the bottom part. Also, I’m not sure this is the best colour on her. And those shoes are fugly.

Heather and I will never miss an opportunity to quote Les Miz. 24601 OUT

I totally join in your crusade!

(Also, I’m rooting for someone to wear something in the shades of red and black, just to make this whole quoting thing easier). :-D

Saw the Les Miz promo during Anna Karenina and have already warned my family not to tease me about the 2 hour weep fest that is about to happen!

I think this is hands down my favorite look shes ever had. The hair and make up lookl amazing and I like the dress on her. I was so skeptical about that hair but its really really works for her.

This was at an event honoring Hugh, so I’m okay with the fact that she didn’t go all out red-carpet. Not that she or any other woman alive is going to pull my attention from Mr. Jackman in evening wear, regardless of what she’s wearing. YUMMMM!

  12. Cass

Her breasts are crying. That is all I can see, and it is all I will ever be able to see. They are crying sparkly mascara trails of tears, to puddle in her lap.

  13. Tiffany

I think the dress is gorgeous. It looks good on her, but I think on Jessica Chastain it would look amazing because of the color.

Not a grief that can’t be spoken, but no castle on a cloud either. It’ s almost as if she were compensating for the NY premiere outrageous outfit/wardrobe malfunction.

That is what I was thinking as I couldn’t decide how to answer the very clever poll.
Heather and Jessica should be on MIndy or some other cool show about smart, funny women. You are wonderful.
Anne should be paying you rent.

I’m not a fan of this. It falls flat for so many reasons. Bad color. Kind of shaped weird. Half-assed sequins. Wrong length. Also, are we not dressing for the season anymore? It’s December. Isn’t she cold?

In other news, Hugh is yummy. Naturally.

    • AmandaD

I agree about the shape. I like the dress in the first pic, but the full-on shot is just odd. Too baggy and frumpy in the skirt.

She was so, so close to looking natural in all the photos… till the last one. sigh. Is it so hard just to smile normally?

I am rooting for her based solely on her hair. However, I am afraid she really is just a “cocktail of affectations.” And she only did the hair for a movie. So there’s that.

I really like this, even in all it’s gory drippiness. I think I like the cut of it mostly, I think the drapiness of it suits her more gamine look of late. Like the hair.

The dress looked better in the pictures with Hugh…

She is accessorizing with Hugh Jackman. She doesn’t need no steenkin’ polish on her toenails.

  21. Claire1

Agreed with it being cut just a couple of inches shorter.
Just as I thought her outlandish make up was perfect for the black bag dress…I think this minimalist make up is perfect for this dress.
I do wish the sequins were different…but that’s because the random randomness of them makes my Type A, hospital corners eyes bleed.

I kind of look at this as a shiny version of the ‘naked’ dress….so I really like the naked shoes….
Oh….and is it just me, or doesn’t this dress feel completely at odds with December?

I think Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway are both theatre geeks and the same slightly try-hard character traits that people find irritating in Anne, people find endearing in a scruffy Australian. Also he might take himself a little less seriously. But he can, he’s older and a man.

To me she looks beautiful but any one of the improvements to hem line, lap sequins, slight droopiness would make her look even better.

  23. Esme

Looks like a violent crime scene. I think the base shade needs to be closer to that of the embellishment (more like navy on darker navy).

The sequins aren’t the best, but on the other hand, they’re safely away from overkill territory. I would consider this one a win.

To me it looks like a really fancy nightgown and not the most flattering color (to much the color of her skin tone) at her. Plus, yeah, it’s winter.

SO. SICK. OF. HER. Take your huge clown head and go away.

Just a tad shorter, hem and weensy spaghetti straps .

See the exression on her face in #2, where she gazes up at Hugh? Yeah, that’s me.

Fewer sequins on the bottom part of the dress, and I’d love it. The sparkles should, as up top, allow for more of the beige cloth to show.

The dress was originally covered with sequins, but she stood next to teh HAWT that is Hugh Jackman in a tux and they melted.

    The only explanation, really.

I really only decided to comment to complement the use of Les Miz in the voting – amazing.

I also agree on the indecisiveness regarding AH – love me some princess diaries anne, but love and other drugs anne is annoying. TBD on Les Miz Anne

A napkin made of sequins seems terribly impractical. And fugly. I like the idea here, but not the execution. If we could only rearrange the sparkles and put a little more support under the bodice, this would be a well-played for me. Oh, and it needs better shoes.

the dress is ok, fine, whatever, but I love the second picture where she’s all, OMG, Hugh Jackman! Because that’s how I’d be, OMG HUGH JACKMAN!

It has strange sparkles, I dunno. However – as much as she’s fugged so many of these individual outfits, I’m glad that her approach to this whole press campaign has been to take risks and not just settle for uncontroversial prettiness. I like the fact that she’s bringing attitude.

I like this, mostly (except for the shoes), though I wish the straps were a little less delicate. I’m not sure what would be preferable.
