Fug or Fab: Alexis Bledel

fug-or-fab

For some reason I have such a hard time embracing Alexis Bledel’s bangs. It’s not that I’m anti-bang; I think it’s that sometimes change is hard, and so even though I believe Alexis actually did have bangs as Rory Gilmore at one point, the Rory Gilmore I will always remember and treasure is this one, and so the bangs are always like a gut punch. I guess it’s human nature to prefer what we know best.

That said, she’s obviously growing up as beautifully as we would all hope (unless you hated Rory Gilmore, in which case, I guess, I’m sorry that she did not sprout three other heads that spew bile and cicadas). But I am not sure how to feel about the dress — the hemline feels a touch like it’s in No Man’s Land, and the cutouts at the waist and shoulders seem like they’re SUPPOSED to be referential of one another but for me they actually end up competing. Also, because they are two people I like, I wish she and Zach Levi were doing something more high-profile together than a Hallmark movie that sounds like The Vow meets 50 First Dates. Also, those movies feel like they already have met. Maybe those two movies themselves have amnesia about the fact that they’ve met, which yielded this movie, which then seems to have forgotten it is an echo of two movies that already met, and… yup, there it goes: Brain pretzel.

Unscramble me, at least with regards to the outfit:

I voted cute, but mostly I think just because she’s got this happy, recently engaged glow &just looks so happy, healthy, and beautiful. Yay Rory!

This dress would look nice on the model not on Alexis :(

Needs for whatever those gawdawful things on the shoulder are to go away and be replaced with black straps the mirror what’s going on at the waist.

I agree that there’s something…off…about the sleeves(?). But I also have a hard time with the length of the skirt. I think that it it stopped above the knee, it would “youth” up the outfit. She’s just too young for that length.

It isn’t even an age thing. Landing a hem smack in the middle of the widest part of the calf doesn’t work on anyone. The leggiest of leggy models can wear it and not look terrible, but even on them it’d still be better if it were either decidedly long, or shorter.

I agree that the main problem is the sleeves. They’re awkward and unflattering. I like the idea of echoing black straps.

Personally, I LOVE the hem of the skirt. I think a hem below the knee is far more flattering and sophisticated than the stumpifying hem directly at or even just above the knee, so I guess reasonable minds can differ. I may concede that she could have raised the hem perhaps 1/4 of an inch, but I don’t have a problem with wear it is. Also, I love the cut-outs, but then again, I’m repeatedly on the record as being a crop top and ab-cut-out supporter, if you have the bod for it.

Below the knee is what I suggested in an earlier post below. This isn’t that. This is mid-calf.

Piggybacking onto that black strap at the shoulder train… hadn’t really thought about it earlier, and yes, that would look good.

Yeah, the movie is really just 50 First Dates on TV. With fewer walrus boner references. (Still a chance for some, I suppose.)

    Rory’s better than that.

Why don’t you watch the movie first and then give your critique? If she chose to do it, as Zachary did, it’s because they liked the script! So, your assumptions are unfounded!

As beautiful as she is, Alexis has a large forehead and I think she looks better with bangs.

As a fellow ‘five-head’ I object to this. I had bangs, and they were cute. But I like myself better without bangs, as I do Alexis. And what’s ‘large’ anyway? I’d rather have a bit more forehead and look as pretty as she does. Variety is the spice of life! :-)

I am very much in your camp, Jane (see my comment below). I’m pretty sure that throughout history, a high forehead has been considered a beautiful and elegant feature, like a long neck.

Also, I’ve never been a huge believer in the idea that if you don’t like something you cover it up. Sweeping a mound of dirty clothes under your rug doesn’t change a thing – it just draws one’s attention more to that odd lump.

I guess I am in the minority on the bangs front…

I actually really like them. Alexis is one of those people who has been blessed with/cursed by a naturally youthful-looking face. I think the bangs age her up a bit. (In a good way, not a matronly way.)

Plus, if you look at the closeup of her engagement ring, it’s nice! Not ostentatious by Hollywood standards.

I agree Corriner! I think her bangs are really cute. When she got them in the Gilmore Girls it was like Rory’s transition into being an adult, and I do think they make her look older. I think she looks ace.

Not sure about this dress though!

No, those bangs are British Invasion level. They are like the bangs of the guy in the Rolling Stones who met his end in Keith Richards’ swimming pool. They are approaching Michelle Williams new bangs magnitude.

(Brian Jones. In his own swimming pool. And the house was previously owned by A. A. Milne. Yeah, I had a fascination with Brian Jones when I was a teenager and he was… long dead. But I digress.)

She just doesn’t look like herself with bangs. Worse, I can’t out my finger on exactly who she does look like. A little help?

For some reason I have such a hard time embracing Alexis Bledel’s engagement to Pete Campbell, he seems like such a skeeze, and not just as PC but in interviews as himself- so not good enough for Rory, who looks beautiful even if her dress could use a tweak or two.

    • Helen
      +1

Yeah, I don’t like Kartheiser either, and I think she outclasses him by light-years.

Oh well, it’s her call, so I’m just going to hope he’s nicer than he seems to me.

      • Corriner
        0

I disagree…. I think what you’re getting is weirdness and possibly uncomfortableness, rather than skeeziness.

Then again, I may just be defending him because he answered a question on Inside the Actor’s Studio in a typically odd way, and January Jones chewed him out in front of everyone, like, ‘you’re embarrassing me!’

        She is stone cold.

I actually found Kartheiser rather charming in the interview I read. He doesn’t own a car, takes the subway, and normally dresses like a regular guy–he seemed very down to earth. But that was a while ago–I hope fame hasnt gone to his head.

I think she looks terrific generally, and terrific with the bangs, and I love the dress on her but for one tweak – I’d lift the hem a bit so it’s just skimming the bottoms of her knees.

Apart from that, really liking it. I don’t know how she manages to make side cut-outs look so demure! They’re not huge, but still. I guess it’s her ladylike bearing!

i’m thinking either the sleeves or the cut-outs. not both. and i think it should be shorter. and i like the bangs but i’m pro-bang.

i despise the bangs. Despise! She has such a lovely face. Really and truly one of the most genetically blessed faces in the biz. The bangs are dowdifying and distracting and detracting. We’ve had the Bang Wars in the comments before, so I’ll avoid making any sweeping statements about bangs which would reignite said wars. But I would just challenge the assumption that bangs are the solution for a high or prominent forehead; personally, I don’t find a prominent or high forehead to be unattractive, so there’e no need to hide it. In my opinion nobody NEEDS bangs. Let me see that lovely face.

    •  Esme

I don’t know–I have a large forehead, but I didn’t really have the desire to hide it and never wore bangs. Then one day I had bangs cut, I never ever got more compliments in my life–most people said they never realized how pretty my eyes were. Thus I haven’t been without bangs for at least 20 years. I guess I’d argue that it depends on a bunch of factors taken together, and not just a White Cliffs of Dover forehead.

She’s a stranger to me, and all of her hair is awful. Looks stringy and thin, like she just stepped out of the shower.

Frankly, there’s noting I like about the dress, either. The shoulder-flaps are the wrong size and placement, and the bodice is a flat sheet of typing paper tacked precariously on to the matronly skirt, which just hangs there.

Although I think she is one of the most beautiful actresses out there, and therefore none of her face should be hidden, I did kind of love her as Rory when she had bangs. They weren’t even that different from how they are now, so I can’t put my finger on why the current ones bother me so much. The old ones were more sideswept and slightly shorter I think? Like this:

I used to be so jealous of those bangs, so why do I hate the new ones?!

I think the dress is stumpifying. It either needs a shorter hem, or to dip the neckline a little bit and lose the weird cap-sleeve things. Or in the best of both worlds: a slightly shorter hem, a slightly lower and less stiff neckline, and sleeves that don’t look like square styrofoam epaulets.

I am not in favor of her bangs at all. She has amazing eyes, and the eye-lash scraping fringe just looks like curtains that end up eclipsing her best feature. Plus with her delicate features and bone structure, heavy bangs like that end up looking out of proportion to the rest of her face. I think I might be okay with bangs on her if she’d cut them higher and lighter, but I think I like her best without them.

i’m realizing that comments regarding celeb fashion fall into at least two of four categories:

    a) i went to FIDM or Parsons, and I am approaching this from a structural POV.
    b) i watch fashion shows that reference FIDM or Parsons, and I think I know what a structural POV is. I also know which season of “Project Runway” featured Malan Breton.
    c) i judge this dress based on my impression of the person wearing it.
    d) i judge this dress based on my own body image issues.

This preface is in honor of “Gilmore Girls”, which ended SIX years ago, and Alexis Bledel (a terrible screen name, if ever there was one) is not Rory. She was always playing 10 years junior her real age, so people think she’s way younger than she is. (Lauren Graham has the same problem, but because she is damn hot no matter what.) Apropos of these criteria, I cannot answer due to a).

    b) This dress is poorly constructed. It looks like something Gretchen (season 8) would make and convince us was cutting edge in Portland.
    c) The future Mrs. Kartheiser (a worse name!) wears this dress well, despite the awkward hem length and undesirable top, because even though it has cut-outs, she manages to appear chaste.
    d) I loathe this dress, because I have neither the waist nor the moral depravity to wear cut-outs. And it’s too long, even if you’re Charlize Theron. Rhymes with Donna Karan.

Excuse me, but Alexis didn’t choose her last name! That is her father’s last name, who is from Argentina! Her mother is Mexican and her first language is Spanish! She’s proud to be a Latina, even though people don’t even realize she is! Leave people’s names alone if they were born with them!

Wow–”morally depraved” ? Talk about judging a book by its cover.I don’t think I’m an evil person, but if I were young enough with a body like Rory’s, I might be tempted to wear something with cut-outs.

      • Guerra

Although I agree with you sajorina (my last name is Guerra, Latina) the origins of bledel is German, it is not a Latin name. But she is proud of her heritage And that’s all that matters!

Like Elizabeth’s Aunt noted, this comment savors strongly of bitterness. But I think many newcomers don’t appreciate the uniqueness of GFY, polite, clean, and highly amusing discussions of fashion by an entire gamut, from the professional to those who toss around phrases like “FIDM” and “Parsons, and those who don’t know a bodice from a hem. It’s all in good fun.

But I love the moral depravity opinion, and share it. Tres amusant.

I do not like the dress. It’s too long for a girl with her stature, the cutouts are weird, & the top fits funny. But I love her tousled banged hair. So well, good on the headsuit, bleh on the dress, & zzz on the shoes. At least she looks happy!
