DGA Awards Fug or Fab: Lena Dunham

fug-or-fab

First of all, I love it when people bring their parents as dates to things — Lena here brought her Dad. I just think it’s sweet. And for the parents, it must be like the BEST VERSION EVER of going to their child’s piano recital.  Let’s talk about her ensemble. I AM on record as loving pink and red together, after all.

What do you think?

I’m in the “hoik it up” camp, and would also favor it being better fitted. The puffiness from the waist down is not flattering. Love the color combo, though, and Papa Dunham looks fab!

        Hoik. Tailor. Spanx.

Tailoring would do wonders, but I too like red and pink together. And her dad as her date is a win! He looks so dapper.

Hoik, tailor, spanx, and I’m sorry (and I’ve never seen her show, so I don’t have any emotional attachment to her in any way, good or bad) but she can’t pull off that haircut, and it always looks bad. Get a brush! Get a flat iron! Get some damn product! At least wash it. Sheesh.

I am so old but I can understand “Girls” and I am thrilled and awed that we, the body politic, are listening to a young woman’s real angst, ennui, joy, confusion, etc. It’s a revelation only to those who aren’t women, or have ever actually listened to them. Lena is a brilliant joy to behold and she looks absolutely wonderful and girlish and relaxed ( take note Kristen other faux talents) and I love her,

    • Wendy
      +1

I too am old and, in the very few minutes I watched, I found everything about the show insufferable, especially Lena Dunham. I have read some quotes from interviews she has given and she oddly enough reminds me of Gwyneth Paltorw–the same lack of understanding about just how privileged her life is. This is why I don’t feel I can give an objective opinion about this dress. Maybe she looks great, maybe not.

      • mary lou bethune
        0

I know what you mean, Wendy, but I do think that Lena seems grateful. I never got that with GP but there is time ; it’s tough to grow up in the public eye, I guess. Humility and real talent help and not having hideous parents of course.

    • Annie
      +2

Please don’t make this show out to be more than it is and don’t criticize those who don’t like it. Can’t we all just celebrate another woman’s success without criticizing others?

  3. Helen

Love the color blocking, and I think these colors really work for her specifically, too, but it does not fit AT ALL in any way, shape, or form.

  4. Reg

I started to believe that Lena’s stylist can’t stand her as much as I do. Poor woman. Nobody deserves to be treated THIS badly. All woman deserve to look pretty. Lena’s head look marvelous, but what is this pink sack??? They basically took one of the coolest combos – red/pink – and turned it into a murder by a sack scene.
Lena must hire whoever is doing Zosia for the past coupld of events. That girl went from frumy disaster to simply lovely.

    • kitten mittens
      0

Zosia has a great body, thin with biggish breasts. Lena has a small chest, tummy, hips, and is short waisted. There are limits to what clothing can do.

      • Laura C
        0

Ugh, please. 1) Let’s not make this about her body. 2) Plenty of women with that body look fabulous on a regular basis. Lena Dunham does not. Ergo, back to 1, it’s not about her body.

That said, I sort of resent how she dresses terribly for her body then when people criticize what she wears without bringing her body into it, she makes it about her body.

        • Sarie
          0

I agree, this has nothing to do with her body type and everything to do with the fact that nothing she wears fist or flatters her. There are plenty of styles out there that would look great on her, with proper fit and tailoring.

        • Popcouver
          0

Stacey and Clinton could style her into something FAB. This dress does not fit.

        • kitten mittens
          0

I don’t think Lena has a bad body, just an normal average body. Zosia just needed to stop wearing clothing that distracted from her figure to look hot. Lena isn’t nearly as easy to dress, using Zosia’s stylist isn’t likely to yeld the same results.
I like Girls and I admire Lena’s willingness to be shot from unflattering angles. I can’t think of a less vain actress. I think it’s great that she accepts herself as is. I think it’s to bad the rest of the world can’t accept an average looking person starring on a tv show.
I like this dress on her. I wish it wasn’t shiny.

” I sort of resent how she dresses terribly for her body then when people criticize what she wears without bringing her body into it, she makes it about her body.” I think this is very very true.

Well said. I have to agree on her tattoos, also. My sister has some that are more subtle and they were still jarring with her strapless wedding gown. These look really cheap contrasted with the dress. Lena always goes strapless, too. Get a better tailor and some sleeves and you’ll be gorgeous.

        • Laura

100% agree with you, Laura C

      • Sarah
        0

I know lots of girls/women with a body similar to Lena’s (or “worse”) who manage to look great. This is just a poor dress. It looks cheap and it doesn’t fit her.

  5. Mary
    +1

I think this is youthful, cheeky, sweet, smart, sexy and geeky all at once. Suits her perfectly and she looks charming. But on the non dress related issue…. I simply hate her tattoos. I do. No matter how significant the inspiration, it looks like ugly grafitti. Gives me the sads.

  6. Esmerelda
    0

The fit is atrocious and the construction looks sloppy. The seams look…not quite right. Like they don’t lay flat enough. And yes, she needs some jewelry. Her head looks great though. And I do like those colors together and on her. She needs an entirely different dress though.

  7. Kate
    0

No. I love this color combination, but Lena has once again chosen a dress that does nothing for her shape. Her waist disappears because of the inherent build of the dress, but it’s also very poorly fitted. Why does she do this to herself?

  8. Alicia
    0

Sorry, but this looks like she took two bridesmaid dresses out of her closet and sewed them together. Not a good look.

  9. Caroline
    0

While I like the color combo, the fabric looks cheap and the whole thing is ill-fitting. On a side note, she needs to take posture lessons from Nina Dobrev.

Strapless is not a good look for her. Neither is the empire/high-waisted look. Frump-a-lumptious.

  12. Kris

    Is she pregnant?

  13. Rayna

I love pink and red together, too, but this dress is made of NO. The whole thing is awkward, does not fit properly, and is too nekkid, IMHO.

On the positive side, she looks happy, head suit looks pretty good, and having her dad with her must be great for both of them.

  14. Rachel
    0

Why is it so disconnected across her chest? See also: beige shoes.

  15. Rob

It’s better than usual for her but still wrinkled and kinda blah…

  16. 503Lottie

Love the colors, hate the fit. It looks like a fancy wine bag. A good tailor would do wonders for Lena.

  17. Saerah
    0

There’s nothing wrong with those colors together. The length is also great on her. As you said, her hair and make up look great. And while there’s something about the dress that suits her, I still want to burn it. It seems like a great cut but a horrible fit. I am confused.

  18. angie

I’m surprised you passed over her beige shoes.

    • Nickydooley
      +1

This. This is what really killed it for me. The nude shoes are such an odd choice to pair with this dress.

Plus, I hate giant bows on anyone over the age of 5.

Actually, I just hate giant bows.

      • Mavis
        0

I was just coming here to ask, “Whither the stabby comments about those awful shoes???” A wasted opportunity. I’m sure there are some amazing strappy something-or-others that would have looked great. PLEASE CAN THE NUDE SHOE TREND STOP NOW? I think i hate it more than Heather and Jessica hate the sheer-overlay trend.

I want to like this dress but cannot. I don’t even think better posture can help it. So much potential but [repeats what everyone else upthread has already written].

  19. Sophie Murray

It’s cute, but she is in serious need of accessories. And maybe an iron.

I know this is not strictly what is being discussed, but Lena Dunham’s tattoos are what finally tipped me over into not getting tattoos. Ever. No formal dress she ever wears is ever going to look right, and this is no exception. Sorry, I had to speak my truth.

    • Cristina
      +1

I don’t think Lena Dunham’s tattoos are particularly well done, but I find it silly to say no woman with tattoos will ever look good in a formal dress. Poorly done and awkwardly placed tattoos will probably always look a little off, but quality tattoos with locations that enhance them and the wearer will look lovely.

    • anonymoose

The tatts are a serious detraction.

  22. Cat
    0

Love the colors, but this dress is atrociously fitted and thus should be burned. No one has a cookie-cutter shape, but seriously, how hard would it have been to get this tailored prior to her wearing it? Awful.

  23. maryse

i think strapless dresses make her boobs sad. i love the color combo though and the length.

  24. Ellen

Hate the dress, love her face.

  25. Sandra
    0

It’s satin and therefore horrible. It will never not look wrinkly. The colors are fab, but the cut is totally unflattering to her. And it doesn’t fit and she is slumping her shoulders something terrible. If you don’t feel secure in strapless honey, then DON”T WEAR IT!

  26. HG
    0

Poor Lena, I feel like she’s always SO CLOSE. When I saw the first top of this dress I was surprised to like it, but then it frumps on the second half. At some point she is going to wear a dress that fits her well and makes her look awesome, but she’s not quite there yet!

  27. McLisa
    0

She’s dressing like her character. Girl needs to disconnect. LOVE the colors, however.

  28. GFY Heather
    0

I am deeply on the “con” side of this dress. I don’t think it’s all that cute on its own merits — the huge red swath is too big to be interesting; it just looks chucked on there to me — and I really don’t think it fits or flatters her. I think… sometimes it just looks to me like she walked behind one of those cardboard cutouts and poked her head in the right spot for pictures. She never seems one with the outfits.

  29. jay
    0

This COULD have been a resounding success if it fitted better. Hell, I was willing to call it a win if she had worn better shoes with it. But the combination of the fit, the bareness of it all and the fact that she looks mildly embarassed to be seen outside in it kind of make it all a bit fug-adjacent (I refuse to write this totally off because it’s still better than about 70% of what she usually wears).

  30. Laura C
    0

Not that I’ve followed Lena Dunham closely and not that this is great, but she looks about as good as I’ve seen her. (I hated her Golden Globes dress.) Yes, it’s wrinkled and doesn’t fit especially well in a way that’s less than flattering at the waist. No, it’s not the fabric I would ever choose. That said, the colors are good for her, she wears it and not the reverse, and broadly speaking the cut could flatter her if it was fitted better. So by her standards, it’s a win.

  31. daphne
    0

But can she walk in those shoes? They are very tall, and at the Golden Globes she was in dire need of a seminar entitled Special Topics in Advanced Stilettos.

  32. Carol

I can’t see anything but the tattoo … so sad.

  33. roser

  34. Julie

Could have been cute, but it doesn’t fit and it looks like she is slouching. I hate it when kids don’t stand up straight!

    • Deborah
      0

Yups, my first thought was “for heavens sake, girl, stand up straight.” The dress is cute, just not for her body type. And she does seem determined to pick stuff with cuts that work against her.

  35. Halo

The dress would have been nice in a different fabric, but I’m letting it slide. She looks great in those colors. The shoes, however, are dire. Burn them.

  36. Kristin
    0

I thought she looked lovely at the GG’s. The tats don’t do anything but detract for me. I wish she would get some styling advice, she deserves to look a lot better than she usually does. Where are you, Stacey and Clinton?

  37. Bdettah
    0

No belt, better shoes, dangle earrings.

  38. Gracie
    0

Yes, the slouching –it’s the first thing I noticed! I’m starting to turn into my mother (“If you would just stand up straight. . . .” Can’t tell if it’s the dress or her posture or both. But the top looks terrible. And the fabric looks cheap. On the positive side, things look good neck and up.

  39. cathy

hate strapless dress on her. they never work on girls with couple of extra pounds because they make arms chunkier than they should be. strapless is for girls with elegant, thin arms and shoulders

  40. Callie
    +1

If it fit, I’d like it. And I think she’d look fab in it. If. It. Fit.

Also I’m being a traitor to my generation (which is the same as Lena’s) but I hate Girls.

    • mary lou bethune
      0

Callie- I would love to know why you hate it? I am old ( see above) but like the spirit if not the content of raunchy.. but not much has changed except there are more diseases that there were in the 70/s.

      • Callie
        +1

Well I don’t mean to sound like a hater because I do admire her for creating a massive hit at a young age (and not only that but directing, writing and acting….that’s incredible). The characters are just way too self-involved for me and I think a lot of their problems could be solved by thinking about themselves less and doing more. But I didn’t much like Sex and the City, so my taste is well-known to be off-message. Like I say, I admire her success and am glad for it.

    • Nina
      +2

Thank you Callie, you’ve given this “way over 30″ some hope. FYI to you ladies of a younger age: If you are over the age of 23, and/or out of college, don’t refer to yourself as a “girl” when you want to be taken seriously, and don’t strive to earn your living by behaving like one. You can do better… as could her stylist.

  41. Minda
    0

Every.single.time. she goes out, I want to walk up to her- the old lady in her 30′s that I am- and tell her to stand up straight and roll her shoulders back. I honestly think that all her clothes would look better if she would just do THAT.

  42. Sallie T

Somebody needs to share this PSA with Lena: that empire-waist/poufy skirt thing silhouette is NOT HER FRIEND. That silhouette is actually nobody’s friend (esp. in heavy and/or stiff fabrics).

  43. heathhansn

Her father needs to introduce her to his tailor. A case of good dress/bad fit.

I will show these to my teenage daughter which I am pretty sure will scare her straight off getting a tattoo.
The fit is awful; definitely needs some accessories.
Her dad looks great. He is definitely rocking that [better looking] Christopher Walken vibe.

  46. Kell from Oz

The dress is ill-fitting, as with everything she seems to wear, but overall a much better look than her potato-sack Golden Globes outfit.

I don’t know why she persists with the sky high, stripper-clone shoes given that she clearly can’t walk in them and generally tries to rock a different look. If we can’t turn to Lena to steer our generation towards a more reasonable heel height, than what hope do we have???

  47. robabeau
    0

I really don’t feel as strongly about this dress as some of you did. I don’t love it, but I don’t think it’s atrocious. I think this girl just has an unfortunate way of making people react more strongly to her than they would if it was somebody else. I feel the same way about her show, actually. It’s not sensational but it’s not gruesome either. She’s not the worst actress on the show (the British chick… oh GOD the British chick), but not the best either. Maybe she’s just being put in a sort of impossible position??

  48. Louisa
    +1

I’ll pass on making the “old” disclaimer because I think I’m right. This young woman should never wear strapless. I think most women should never wear strapless. It creates an enormous swath of bright naked skin that looks like it’s been jammed into a dress that either needs to be hiked up or makes you look linebackery or both. Some women can break up that expanse of skin with long hair or jewelry, but strapless requires a certain body type and hers isn’t it. I say that with respect because my body type certainly isn’t it either. Most women aren’t the strapless type. Most celebrities aren’t. It’s just not good, but strapless dresses are so everywhere and so common that people don’t seem to notice that most of them aren’t flattering.

I like the colors, but this dress doesn’t fit well and she needs fabric on her shoulders to balance her hips. I hope she gets over strapless and tries dresses with sleeves or straps, a v-neck, and a nipped waist. The right dress would make her an hourglass.

  49. Khalesi
    0

I’m glad she looks happy, but that dress is hideous on her and she doesn’t know the first thing about dressing for her body shape. I hate to rag on her sartorial choice because I dislike the way she portrays herself in general, but seriously, woman, take that advance payment for your book and hire a stylist who doesn’t despise you.

  50. BrownEyedBetty
    0

The dress looks like a home ec. project. I really know nothing about her and have never seen Girls. But given all the accolades she got at the globes, I would have thought she could get some help with her look from here on out. Cover up the tats and stand up, for pete’s sake. Sheesh. If enough complete strangers say that on a website, someone ought to say it to her face. Good Grief, I hate being other people’s mom. Don’t make me do that Lena. Just don’t!

I think I like this look a lot more than most of you do. The desss COULD use a little bit better fit, and the shoes could have added pizazz instead of making us nod off, but overall I think she looks good. I love the obi!

I read an interview with the costume designer for “Girls.” She said she purposefully chooses odd combinations and ill-fitting clothes for Lena Dunham, because she feels it says a lot about her character’s lack of self-esteem and search for identity. In fact, the costume designer said that if they have something that fits Lena well, they will alter it so it doesn’t look flattering. It was an interesting piece about how costumes create character.

Yet every time I see Lena Dunham OUTSIDE of the show, she is wearing odd combinations and ill-fitting clothes. Is Ms. Dunham earnestly running with this look as if it’s something that’s flattering? Or is being her character all the time her schtick? Or are these ill-fitting dresses a statement about how fashion is made for skinny Hollywood types and not for “real women?” Personally, I believe that every woman, every size, every shape can wear clothes that flatter them. Thousands of women with her figure look great every day just standing up straight and wearing clothes they got at the mall.

  54. Dani
    0

I think she’d look awesome in very tailored shifts and 1960s smocks. She really needs to stop wearing things that even remotely require a waist because it’s just not flattering.

This dress would be cuter if she had teamed it with pink or red shoes. Would that have been too matchy? Because I feel like the nude shoe with her pale skin does nothing for her whereas more twee would have upped the cuteness.

  55. JanetP
    0

Okay, I think we need to start giving her some advice instead of just saying we hate this dress. I’m envisioning a deepish emerald green, coming down to a vee in the front, a fitted bodice, and maybe a nice full skirt, tea-length. (I really suck at describing clothes, so my image of this is undoubtedly much lovelier than I just made it sound.) A rich color against her pale skin, structure for her figure, and not stuffy, either. Anyone else wanna play?

I love the pink and red together, but I don’t like the aggressive seam between the pink and the red. Also the fabric seems kind of stiff. It reminds me of the extra-thick faux satin used to make our marching band uniforms in grammar school, with seamstress work by the same parents who sewed those uniforms.

  59. G

This isn’t the first dress you’ve shown recently that has a weird wide ribbon of fabric ruining the bustline. Why does anyone think that’s a good idea?

  60. stephasaurus
    0

ugh. this looks like the reason someone got kicked off the 4th episode of project runway. i think they used some sort of heat activated seam glue and and lefty scissors to construct it. as much as a girls likes a good color block, its ALL ABOUT PROPORTIONS. and why does it look like her bosom is… sad. is it frowning? or is it just tired from trying to hold up all that extra fabric?

  63. Liz

I like the colors and her hair looks great. Love her and the show, and the disdainful comments about these characters being so privileged seem sexist to me. How many shows about rich white guys are there, only a million? Why is their privilege never an issue to this degree? And Hannah’s parents are freaking college professors, not investment bankers. If they were that rich, they probably wouldn’t be cutting Hannah off.

    • Liz

Do women really have to be struggling before we can connect or relate to them? That’s just gross to me.

    • Poppy
      0

I totally agree, it can’t be enough that she’s writing, editing, acting in and directing her own show, she also has to deal with all the other problems of T.V. as well. It’s a massive problem that there aren’t enough people of colour on T.V., but I don’t know why Lena has become the fall-girl for it when there are loads of male-helmed T.V. shows that also don’t feature many P.o.C. I think it’s totally sexist that she has been blamed for all of this when there are many more shows (mostly, as I said, helmed by males), which are also to blame.

      • Fiona
        0

Totally agree with you and Liz. The vitriol towards here in the comments both here and other sites really depresses me – she’s young, she’s a woman and she’s fucking KILLING it in her chosen profession – can’t we be a bit more supportive?

        • Ladyblahblah
          +1

I think the idea that women must support women because they’re women is problematic. I just don’t like what I know about Lena Dunham, the same as I don’t like what I know of, say, Quentin Tarantino. They may both be talented, but I don’t enjoy their work. I shouldn’t have to support something or someone I don’t like just because that person has the same body parts that I do.

  64. Vi
    0

OK, clothes only: 1) the color combo looks great on her, 2) the fit sucks.
She may not have come from an ultra-privileged background, but she had lots of resources, now, money-wise. She should use them to find clothes that fit her. (I was going to say: That fit her body.) But, we all know she has a body. Good, tailored, well-fitting clothing should not be such an issue for her. Why is it such an issue???
BTW, her Dad looks like Chris Walken. Very cool.

  65. jean

Hair and make up is fabulous, the red and pink amazing combo. What really gets me is Lenas stubborn idea of strapless! Why??? She’d look so much better in a beautiful scoopneck or something. Papa Dunham is obviously yumm :D

Oh god, it’s so anti-woman of me, but a red carpet appearance calls for shape wear. Sorry. I get that she is young and probably feels it’s misogynistic to wear spanx, etc. but it looks better. If you spend that much on a dress (or wear a pricey one for free) make it look its best. Sometimes the boobs need a hand.

It looks like a bridesmaid’s dress that was shortened after the wedding. Only the seamstress messed up and cut it way too short then “fixed” it by adding a different fabric.

Is she doing an Olsen “prune” in the lead pic?!?!

She should wear long sleeves and nothing low-cut. Cover up those tatoos–ugh. She is a poster-girl for hosiery, too.
