Critics’ Choice Awards Well Played, Jaime King

I seriously don’t know if I’ve ever seen Jaime King look this fab:

Obviously, she regularly looks lovely, because she IS lovely, but wardrobe-wise this is such a home-run: simple, sexy, sophisticated, flattering, and perfectly accessorized.

The back is interesting, too:

To me, this works because it doesn’t look like a bra. It feels like an interesting back that is vaguely lingerie inspired, but you would NEVER look at this and think she was running around in her underwear — it’s still elegant. Great lipstick, great bag, GREAT earrings. A perfect ten from the jerkiest judge on the panel (that would be me).

Um, are you not upset about the sheerness of the skirt? To it looks like she’s wearing Esther Williams’s bathing suit under there.

Yeah, I’m pretty sure I can see some retro underpants.

Um, everyone? CLICK ON THE PIC TO ENLARGE. It’s not panties, it’s REFLECTIVE SQUARES on the fabric bouncing the light back at the camera, unfortunately the shine has bad geometry. You can barely see any of her legs through it, mainly her calves and ankles. Barely, or none of, her thighs.

The skirt is still sheer, although not nearly as blatantly as other dresses.

are we ignoring the see through bottom and the unflattering undergarment? bc i thought that was something we hated. and i dont mean the royal we, i mean we like THE PLANET.

I am SHOCKED that you love this! Did you notice that everything below the crotch is sheer?

      I don’t get it.

Is sheer considered bad by everyone for some reason?

Seriously. I’m really asking. Is not-liking-sheer a ‘thing’?

Even if I wasn’t on board with sheer in general, I’d still be on board with this iteration of it; the sheer fabric lightens what would have been a thick, heavy, dark looking bunched up skirt.

I agree with you, LexBreeze! Sure, sheer is generally overused and frequently messes up a lovely dress. But it can also be lovely, like it is here. I think this is gorgeous.

it is *definitely* a thing and I am on board! :)

And I totally agree with the “bad bathing costume” comment above.

I’m with Kit. Sheer is usually tacky, which is why it’s a thing. I think this is lovely–but to be a 10 the bottom would need to be opaque.

Sheer is okay, but it matters what you put underneath. Some kind of slip, or a delicate lining: yes. Underpants or a bra: NO.

Why would one have one’s own surname tattooed between one’s shoulder-blades? When we talk about labeling people we don’t usually mean it quite so literally.

My ex-boyfriend got his last name tattooed on his arm when he was 18. It was his very first ink. I think he did regret it a little.

Perhaps in case one got lost. I’m not judging one’s life.

Yeah, weird. Especially when your name is “King.”

Haha, I call them “champ stamps”.. they are popular with sportsmen! And tacky, too

She’s lovely. The tattoo? A perfect example of why one should think twice before getting one.

….with all that visible thigh? Really? I looked at the photo before the headline and assumed it was a fug, knowing y’all. Is it possible I don’t know you as well as I thought I did? Sob. I need a drink.

that is totally visible thigh and I too, am disappointed in the girls.

This is gorgeous, and everyone freaking out about a little bit of sheerness (which, this is the best deployment of that trend I think I’ve ever seen) or her tattoo is depressing me.

She looks great, but it is suspiciously leg-curtain-y.

I’ve got my eye on you!

She looks really glam in the frontal shot above her waste. The granny panties and the skeevy tattoo ruin the rest of it for me.

It has potential. I like the polka dots, but the visible granny panties? not so much. Also not crazy about the back.

This is obviously what every person who has ever worn a sheer skirt with granny panties thinks they look like. But, sadly, and obviously to everyone else, they do not. I have hated the sheer over matte along with the rest of you from the very beginning, but this is lovely.

I think saving it is that she has 2 layers, the dot and another layer over that so it isn’t as aggressively see-through as so many of them are. Maybe. But I won’t be happy if this gives the trend even more legs (heh) than it unbelievably already has, because this is is an anomaly people!! Do NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. Or anywhere we can see you.

I also generally hate this sheer trend thing that’s going on (Kristen Stewart…I shake my fist at you!), but this is done well and is actually really pretty.

It’s pretty good except I am sick of that sheer bottom see-the-panties thing.

I love the dress, but that tattoo is horrible!

Lace tablecloth over hot pants. NOT a fab.

This is the only sheer ensemble that I’ve seen that I think is OK. I think because it’s not so in your face SHEER…. it’s more Gypsy Rose Lee than Jena Jameson.

The dress looks great on her, but the back does look like a C9 sports bra style sold at Target or a Speedo training swimsuit.

Lovely from the front but string back and tattooed back a fail.

If only the skirt were opaque… those visible granny panties ruin what would otherwise be really lovely.

Too bad about those unsightly tattoos, too.

I guess the tattoo is for when a new acquaintance is hitting it from the back.

I think the Fug Girls must be overworked and bleary-eyed, because this dress is not great. The back really does look like a bra, and we can see her granny pants. However, she does look beautiful – despite, not because of, the dress.

ABSOLUTELY WELL PLAYED! This whole outfit is DIVINE! The dress is FABULOUS and fits her beautifully! Hair, makeup, jewelry & clutch are PERFECTION! COVET it all!

I don’t think they’re granny panties! If you look at the bottom of the dress it looks like there’s a beigey lining that runs all the way up. I don’t think we’re actually seeing any lady flesh.

She looks disturbingly like Lohan – I think it’s the terrible mismatch between hair, eye and skin tone combined with the lingerie-inspired dress.

When I first saw the thumbnail, I went “Lohan cleaned up? Good for her!” I think it’s the hair and cheekbones, for me.

She probably got that horrible tattoo when she was addicted to herion at 18 or something… It seems like something one would think was a good idea at that point in your life. Also, I think the dress is fantastic, and those “granny panties” look more like little shorts, I like the dress, and I like her.

As for the rest of the outfit, I like it! Yes, it’s aggressively sheer, but the stuff on the fabric breaks it up for me and makes it fun, not eye-twitchy. The only thing I’d change is that hem-length. Why anyone would want to have it puddle like that is a bit beyond me. I love tattoos, so it makes me happy seeing them shown off.

Sheer. No. Tat. Yuck. Pity. Love her.
