Cannes Fugs and Fabs: The amfAR Gala

I was all het up about Cannes juror Nicole Kidman not being at this (or at that may other things), but it turns out she was, and just may not have done the red carpet. I’ve decided this is because she’s been holed up all day in a darkened room watching every Cannes movie and flossing popcorn out of her teeth.

Maybe I’m in the minority but I think Jessica Chastain looks great.

I think that color on her is FAB FAB FAB. If there wasn’t that key hole in the front, this would be a win for me.

At first I thought it was Jennifer Lawrence – and it was a great look for Jennifer.

    • MaryinLA
      +8

Totally agree… I think she looks stunning. I don’t mind the keyhole but I think it would look 1000% without it.

      • MaryinLA
        +1

1000% better without it… that is.

The hair and make up aren’t as fab as with the purple Givenchy. Not objectively horrible, but a terrible let-down after how great it was yesterday.

    • Kat
      +3

Well, I prefer this look to the last one (the purple was divine, but the rest didn’t work for me). I love everything here even the keyhole, and yes even the beige shoes.

        +4

        With you 1000%, Kat.

The thrown-together ponytail subtracted all kinds of goodness out of her look in the sparkly purple gown … her hair here is MUCH better. (Though this woman photographs exceptionally well in profile or near-profile no matter what her hair is doing … sigh.)

I love this gown’s shade of red … And what was done with the fabric in the back should more than make up for anyone’s objections to the keyhole in the front.

(And boy, didn’t she seem to be having a whale of a good time at this event? Yay!)

Is there a photo of the back of the dress? I couldn’t find one, and now you’ve got me curious.

(You’ve probably found some by now, but … )

Getty Images has some (#169375161 takes my breath away!).

Saw a few elsewhere, but don’t remember the source(s), alas. A shame, because there were a couple where you could clearly see how nicely the fabric was worked behind the right shoulder.

No, I hadn’t found any, so thanks! — and this is lovely from any angle. The color is to die for!

I love the dress on her, but why does she look like she’s about to cry? It’s making me feel bad!

    • Margo

I agree. I usually hate anything resembling a keyhole so much I can’t like anything else about a dress, but here I think it works great, fits great, and makes the dress even more interesting. The color is gorgeous, the fit is perfect. I wouldn’t expect that kind of bodice to hold together and fit everywhere, and it does. The shoes are weak sauce though.

    • Roosje
      +3

Indeed, it’s stunning. I love redheads in red even more than I love redheads in purple. I also feel that the sleekness of this dress is more suited to Chastain’s style aesthetic.

      • Edith
        +6

So glad to find so much support for my opinion that Jessica Chastain looks GORGEOUS in this dress. Love the color, love the sleekness. Not a great expression, but lord, I’m sure there were photos where she was giving better face. Hate the shoes on principle, but that’s a tiny nit to pick.

I wish I were Indian and had a reason to wear a drop-dead beautiful and intricate sari like Aishwarya Rai’s.

    • Lizzy
      +14

Rai’s sari is to die for. It puts all of those ill-fitting peekaboo dresses to shame. THIS is how a woman dresses, ladies.

You know what else Carine Roitfeld could get at Wal-Mart for $6? A HAIRBRUSH!

    • Annie E
      +6

SERIOUSLY. I don’t usually have much of a problem with the undone hair we see on these pages all the time, and I myself am guilty of forgetting to brush my hair, so the fact that I took particular notice of Carine Roitfeld’s hair means it must be pretty bad. It’s a) covering half her face and b) stringy and blegh.

    •  HelenBackAgain
      +4

Her face looks dirty, too. I think she might have REALLY hopped out of bed, or off a beach towel, ran to the closet, thrown this on, and just gone without looking in a mirror.

      • CopyChic
        +1

I love how in the morning when I walk the dog and also haven’t brushed hair/applied makeup/uncrusted my eyes yet, that CR still looks better than me. Clothes-wise.

P.S. I also totally read the caption for Bonnie Wright as “Love the boob, Bonnie.”

At least in that picture, Audrey Tatou is totally French Nora Zehetner

How did this Nora Zehetner person slip under my radar? Never heard of her.

    • Abby

I think, sadly for Nora, it’s actually reversed: she is American Audrey Tautou.

      • GFY Heather

I am not a Nora Zehetner fan — which seems strange but she REALLY rubs me the wrong way in absolutely everything — so I went Bilson instead.

        • Lis

Well, Audrey Tautou is an international film star, as opposed to the other two, so I agree with Abby…

I have to admit, I love Sharon Stone’s dress, snake and all!

Did Carine Roitfeld tumble out of bed, pull on the first thing she saw and run out without looking in the mirror?

Virginia Woolf once said about another woman : “she looks as if she were a parrot who had been abused by street boys but didn’t realize it.” Ditto here and for Goldie and several others…..
Is anyone in the world cuter than Audrey Tatou?

Sharon Stone just looks like an overall good time.

Love the color of Jessica’s dress but I see your point about the key hole.

Sharon Stone – one side of her back is darker than the other. Doesn’t she have minions to apply self tanner? Also, put some lotion on those elbows, Stone!!

Kristen Scott Thomas – I seriously look less frumpy than that when I get up in the morning, and put on a pair of baggy gray pajama bottoms and a teeshirt.

    • junaitatres

Sharon Stone’s bronzer is pretty aggressive and uneven. I still think she looks pretty great though.

      •  HelenBackAgain
        +2

It’s a natural tan – she must’ve spent the day at the beach. Those don’t always come out evenly… you can tell by the string mark from the top across her back.

        • aeb
          +1

came here exclusively to discuss sstone’s tanlines on her back. thank you for getting there first because they are wackier than that snake! where are the whackadoodle pics of her bikini, heather?

          • Guerra
            +4

You guys saw Sharon stone and all you can see is her tan lines? What about the fact she looks amazing and better then girls half her age!! & without looking like a cosmetic experiment!

            • Angela Brown
              0

I did NOT notice the tan lines either because I could only think, “Wow, she looks exactly like she did 20 years ago, AND doesn’t look like she’s had a ton of plastic surgery!” But she MUST have had work done, right? Either that, or she made a deal with the devil…

IMO, I think Sharon Stone should leave the Vulcan eyebrow look to Zachary Quinto.

The theme at this gala must have been “early morning”. Chastain’s hair and makeup look like she just rolled out of bed (and the dress looks like she might have wrapped the bedsheet around herself and pinned it strategically). Paz Vega looks like what I always imagined a mime in a nightgown might look like. Janet looks like she went on a caffeine bender and might not have gone to sleep yet.

I think Ginny Weasley is the best of the lot. Seems like most of the girls from that franchise are growing up remarkably well.

  9.  Amy S

I don’t get it – Rosario Dawson is a beautiful girl, but always ends up looking frumpy. She doesn’t need to go fancy, but at least brush her hair and buy clothes that fit? I can’t help it, I love Dita’s dress – but not with those shoes.

I’m pretty sure music DOES swell every time Aishwarya Rai enters the room. AS IT SHOULD.

Goldie Hawn’s dress may be crazy, but it suits her and she looks like she is having a blast. I’d rather look at that any day than the parade of sourpusses we have been seeing. If Jessica Chastain looked like she was having half as much fun as Goldie Hawn, I’d probably like her fashion choices a lot more.

    • ericajeanine

Yep, Goldie looks like she just finished spinning around screaming “wheeeeee” like a happy kid loving their new pretty dress.

I read the first sentence of commentary on Bonnie’s dress as “Love the boob, Bonnie.” and blinked twice and had to re-read it. The bob *does* look nice on her. Hate the shoes, though.

Even with better hair and makeup, I’m not at all sure that Stacy Keibler has the gravitas to pull off such a Big Dress. It’s wearing her.

Goldie Hawn is SO GOLDIE. I love it!

I am delighted by the caftan– not that it’s… you know.. anything I would wear, but if I were Goldie Hawn and hilarious and awesome? You bet your ass I would.

Also the idea of Rupert Grint guesting on New Girl to be alongside Schmidt fully DELIGHTS me, and now I’m sad that it will probably never happen :(

Dita Von Teese annoys me because she always looks like she’s in costume for a movie set in the 40′s. I get the appeal of a retro look but give it a rest sometime.

Kat Graham–bad dress, but I love the necklace.

Kylie–the front of her dress looks like it’s been unbuttoned way too low (making her look as if she got dressed in a hurry and didn’t button up).

I had to zoom in on Chastain’s shoes to make sure they weren’t damned espadrilles. I wouldn’t put it past her.

OK and I shamelessly love the starfish cuff, but then starfish plus snake? A bit much…but I love the snakey-back. How do you choose? I can totally see why she just did both.

If Stacy is no longer George’s plus one, how does she manage to still have access to designer clothes?? And why is she invited to these events? After all, her claim to fame is as a wrestler and a stint on Dancing With the Stars.

Yeah, I love me some Goldie (and I’m old enough to remember her on Laugh-In ) and I agree with the person above who said she looks like she just twirled around going ‘wheeeee’ – still, I would have picked something different for her in this case. She is in spectacularly good shape for her age. Goldie: call me!

I love Jessica Chastain’s, Audrey Tautou’s & Dita Von Teese’s dresses! And I agree with you on Ellie Goulding’s dress! But that THING Mallika Sherawat (I don’t know who she is) is wearing is one of the FUGLIEST things I’ve ever seen on this site and in general!

    • BrownEyedBetty
      +2

what exactly IS going on with Mallika’s gown..?? I see a shadow in the crotcholar region and two ghostly white shapes where her thighs should be…and it’s all inflated. I don’t get it.

Love Janet’s blazer top and the shoes, but the pants….

In addition to being a bit too long, the are slightly see-through and way too billowy. They are kind of like Aladdin pants.

As an aside: I don’t know what her skin regimen is, but she should market it. Even before surgery, she had great skin. She almost always gives good face!
