BRIT Awards Fug or Fab: Gemma Arterton

fug-or-fab

Y’all know how much we love a sequin, and the idea of a sparkly Mr. Rogers cardigan is weirdly (or not?) appealing.

Something about all of this TOGETHER, though, looks like she’s playing Moneypenny in a Bond-themed Vegas revue. Then again, I would totally go see that, so what the hell do I know?

She has such a great figure normally but this makes her look a lot wider and boxier than any other pictures I’ve seen of her. The top would be cute over a little black tank top and jeans though

Wow! I was just going to say the exact same thing. Wear the cardi open over a black tank and skinny jeans – perfect.

I agree. She is sooooo gorgeous, this makes her look wide.

forget the outfit. GOOD GOD, she’s pretty. she needs to be in more stuff and in better stuff

It’s kind of sweet, but looks like a costume, so you kind of expect her to be handing around hors d’oeuvres, along with a few other, nearly identically dressed women.

Did you see the back of this? I will look for the link.

I was just going to leave the same comment. It’s weird as is, but the back pushed it into full-on fug for me.

I love both the top and the bottom, but not together. And she is gorgeous.

This is so unflattering on her! I would definitely split this up!

This screams Christmas to me. Might be better in another color and split up, but as is, this looks like ‘Mrs. Claus has a desk job’.

Most definitely a holiday ensemble leaning a bit toward costume… that one would wear performing burlesque. And now I want to see the matching hat.

My 14 year old son glanced at this and said “she looks like a Christmas present”. Maybe not the image she wanted to project?

I love a sequin, I really do, but that cardi top there’s something about it that looks cheap. Maybe it’s the detailing? Anyway, this shouldn’t have happened.

      odd!
also, is her skirt asymmetrical, like the models? cause it looks more like a simple A-line.
It looks much nicer on the model, though

      Wow…the back..this is a crazy outfit!

It’s like a different take on the mullet idea, this time being party in the front and business in the back. Fug.

I know it’s weird, but the back makes me like it more.

I am not able to handle the back of this outfit. Three thumbs down.

That back is… a surprise that I neither like nor dislike. But the description refers to the outfit as a “dress” — perhaps this is really one piece designed to look like two? In that case, the most popular poll option (as of the time of my comment) is moot. :-(

I’ve just read that she’s currently distraught about a divorce, in which context this sort of makes more sense. It’s a marriage of red carpet + comfy ice cream eating and crying cardigan.

  11. TaraMisu

It looks so cheap…. and those shoes are fug. I would just start over.

I would like this a lot better if the skirt were just a tad shorter and a solid black fabric. The length looks odd — it’s hitting at her knees? She looks fabulous from the neck up, though.

All objections noted, my irrational love of sequins forces me to ADORE this, as it is.

It’s like the insane love child of Dorothy’s ruby slippers and a sensible suit.

I hate bashing size, and I hate when someone says something makes someone look fat.
So I won’t use that phrase. In lieu of that:
This makes girlfriend look HUGE. Macey’s Day balloon. What’s up with that, does she not have a mirror? Or friends?
She’s not a starlet anymore. She’s a full-on star. And not in a good way. Am I the only one seeing this?

    • Gretchen
      +7

YES. you are the only one who could possibly look at this girl and describe her as being as huge as a Macey’s Day balloon.

    • lusucanna
      +2

how is what you just said any better than calling someone fat?

      • lindad
        0

I guess it’s not. I weight about 120. If I gained 30 pounds, which is what this outfit does to her, I’d be noticeably larger. three or four SIZES larger. My point is, this is a THIN girl. For an outfit to do that do her is effed up. I didn’t say she was fat. I said she looked fat. And we were discussing the outfit. Which makes her look fat. Huge. Whatever. She deserves better.

    • Seriously?
      0

WTF is “Macey’s Day?” Surely you’re not referring to Macy’s *Thanksgiving* Day Parade? That’s ridiculous. It’s not the most flattering thing she’s ever worn, but in no way does she look “HUGE.” You are absolutely the only one saying she’s similar in size to an effing cosmic body. Geez.

      • lindad

Well, I’m unable to defend my comment. Feel free to continue criticizing me unmoderated. Too bad, because I did have a point.

[ These comments are actually not un-moderated, as you can see because I am editing yours. There are two of us here. We can not moderate things as they happen. Your comments are being thrown into the moderation queue and I have to approve them -- this happens to a lot of people all the time, and not always for reasons I can understand myself. That being said: please don't compare people to giant floating balloons and then say you didn't call them fat. Everyone else, calm down also. Thank you - J]

This looks like something Barbara Bush would wear if she hosted a cabaret night.

But, GOOD LORD, Gemma is beautiful. AND I WANT HER HAIR.

  16. Maura
    +1

I really love this. My only problem is that the top does not fit her well- the buttons are straining a little on the lower half. I don’t think she should have gone up a size, but a few strategically placed snaps would have helped.

  17. Gretchen
    +2

I agree with the earlier comment that the cardigan is cute but the skirt would be better plain black.
But now that I’ve seen pictures of the whacky back, I hate the entire thing

  18. TheCityDweller
    +1

First of all, I already threw up about the back of this outfit, found in a link someone kindly posted. Second of all, I think the red cotton trim on this cardigan kinda ruins it. Me no like, no sank you.

This looks to me like a “librarian” character’s costume in an ice capades show. she just needed nude colored shoe covers to finish it up. and glasses.

  21. Sandra
    +3

WTF? As sparky separates that should be split up, I liked it. But the back of it isn’t just no; it’s HELL no. The shoes were horrible to begin with and seeing the backs of them didn’t help.

  22. Vandalfan

If she wore decent shoes, strappy, thin heel, maybe metallic or black, and if the back was not one wide, blank grey slate of fugly, I’d be all over this. If they were sequined all over, the pieces could also go play by themselves, under a black tank and jacket, or over jeans or a slender sheath dress.

  23. Sue

Pity. I was about to ask who the refreshingly average-sized woman was. She’s gorgeous. This makes her look “wide”? I don’t know who she is or what she normally looks like, so I can’t say. I think she looks very pretty.

  24. Bottle Ginger

The overall effect is astonishingly frumpy. But the sequins are so sparkly, and the color is SO flattering that I’m determined to fix it!

Okay, narrow the skirt to a vampish pencil instead of a weight-adding A-line, and shorten it to juon the knee or just above – that’ll give the whole outfit an hourglass silouette. And change the shoes to something fierce and sexy, instead of something that looks like espadrilles from Payless; add a sexy pose, and voila! Sexy sequins in a deep red color that makes her glow!

  25. Esme

Is she expecting? Can this horrible dress really make her look that big? The back–oh my god.

sparkly librarian I like. I think it’ s quite sweet, she looks gorgeous and I love her curves. It’s also freezing in London right now, why is everyone expected to wear the the same strapless black gown?

you should have posted the Jaime Winstone outfit..quite possibly the worst outfit I’ve seen on any human being ever. It needs to be posted ladies.
