Better Played, Jessica Chastain

well-played

Chastain LOVES McQueen:

The good news is that McQueen loves her back. This is sort of great, right? The neckline is kind of…let’s just say I kept staring at it trying to figure out if I like it, and then I feel weird that I have spent so much time staring at her boobs, so I gave up on that. But it’s relaxed, in a good way, and she’s working that. I love that it’s just a light pink that it’s basically white, and I extra love that it doesn’t seem to be torturing any of her vital organs. Do I wish she had a pop of extra color? Yes. But I want a lot of things, including world peace and the hand of Jon Hamm in marriage, but sometimes we have to be happy with what we’re given.

It’s… sort of great. With the combo of gorgeous woman and McQueen I want to love it way more than I do. Something about the cut seems slouchy– it’s different, which is good, but not that flattering. I think this is another one where she comes sooo close, but didn’t hit the nail on the head? But pretty. Pretty it is. Also I want to be in Cannes.

I agree about the cut! It almost looks like it was suppose to have a crinoline under it to add “poof” but she opted to not wear it. I like it more than I like most of the stuff she wears but again, it isnt quite 100% there for me.

She looks relaxed and confident in this, not to mention light as a dandelion fluff. It’s a perfect foil for a very pretty face and the impressive jewelry. The neckline is just unusual enough to make it interesting, and it’s not terribly immodest. I am very pleased and impressed with this!

This. I am most impressed by how relaxed and happy she looks in this dress, and by the super interesting neckline. I’m a sucker for an interesting detail, and I love that she was probably super comfortable all night getting to hang out in this. I even like the low-effort updo. Go, Chastain!

They don’t show up much here but she wore some gorgeous earrings with this. Pretty all around.

Why is her right boob so much higher on her chest than her left? And why have I spent so much time staring to try to figure it out? Other than that – the dress is just okay for me.

I think it needs a belt – then it would be full on fab.

I wish she had kept the silver belt that went with it, but otherwise I adore it. She rocks the relaxed, clean lines look, and she looks so happy! Double win!

I love the dress. Yes, a pop of color would be great. But I LURVE a dress with pockets!

So close! I love this McQueen but styling-wise she looks like she changed into the dress and then ran out of time for hair and makeup. A bright lip and a belt in a fun color would be great for a daytime event, or maybe just slightly stronger eye makeup with her existing accessories in a different color (imagine emerald green).

I REALLY like the dress, but her boobs look a bit wonky here. I feel like if there were a bit (just a little bit) more coverage, that would even things out a bit? But she looks very pretty and I love the relaxed look of this dress.

How many f’ing times do I have to tell designers that pockets do not belong in women’s formal-wear. Pants and jackets have pockets; casual day-dresses might have pockets. Ballgowns do not have pockets. Ever. A professional actor should be able to figure out something to do with her hands besides that.

It’s a cute dress. Definitely needs a belt. I think it would make it more interesting.

Love the dress … your neckline doubts are more about the lack of even support for the girls than the neckline itself, I think …

I like this a whole lot. And do you know part of the reason why? I’m not wondering where her feet are or if she’s going to trip when she tries to walk. Hooray for proper hemming!

Love the faint pink dress with her red hair and her beautiful relaxed smile. She kind of reminds me of Lisa Kudrow here.

TonyG, I was going to say the same. I love that as a red-head she’s not shy of pink, those old-fashoned colour-combo no-nos are so annoying.

I am also yet to see a dress/skirt with pockets I didn’t love. I think they might be the reason why she looks so relaxed.

I dig it. I, like others, wish she had a belt on, but I like it. She does look relaxed and happy. I agree with what was said about her here weeks or months ago – I like her so much that I want her to look as cool as I think she is, you know? And this comes close to that.

The neckline is a bit odd to me, and a colored belt or something would be great, but overall, I think that this is one of the best looks we’ve seen from her. She looks lovely!

The neckline looks like a toilet seat. The pockets don’t belong on this dress. The color is boring and the shape is not flattering.

I love everything else about the dress but I was scrolling down to say exactly, yes, TOILET SEAT.

To me, it’s perfect except for the waist, where it just doesn’t quite seem to fit. Not that I’m advocating the torture of her internal organs, but it just…..needs to nip in a bit more for me.

Not with a fancy belt, though. I saw on another site that the original runway version had a belt with a sparkly buckle, which looked really nice, but not nearly easy breezy enough for Cannes. if this got a belt, it would need to be in the same color, I think.

Apparently you all are seeing something I”m not, because I *hate* this. It doesn’t fit her, it looks cheap, the neckline is weird, it (and her boobs) are sagging, and it has freaking pockets. Just terrible all around.

I do not care for the neckline, and it needs something more, even just a rosette or self-belt or something.

I kind of want it to be my wedding dress. Not sure if that goes in the plus or minus column for Chastain though.

Sooo close. The neckline wonkitude isn’t working – didn’t work on that two-piece peplum horror either (http://www.thefashionpolice.net/2012/02/jessica-chastain-in-alexander-mcqueen.html).

Blander than bland. At least the fit is good(ish).

She looks sooo pretty, but how much nicer would this look in a soft sage green or a slightly deeper pink, or wedgewood blue?

The dress is okay, but the color washes her out. Align the boobs!

Everyone knows that when you skin color is white you don’t wear white… because you look like a ghost!

Hard to tell in this photo, it’s light icy pink, overexposed in the photo which is why it looks white.

Does her hair count as an extra pop of color?

  29. Rubee

Ditto to most of the above: she looks happy, confident, comfortable and relaxed… I would have liked the dress to be in just anyother color -even black- than white. The white makes her look like a coloring books’ figurine awaiting for children to draw their own patterns.

The digital transmission must be off somewhere, or the picture’s overexposed and not color-corrected.
In fact, this dress is pale, icy pink, not white.

This is awful. This woman never looks good. I also hated that stupid tapestry that she wore to the Oscars that everyone loved, so maybe my judgment is just off…but probably not. haha.

Redhead + this shade of pink = perfect.
The neckline drop is proportionately a bit low to my eye, but overeall it’s a very pretty dress. She looks lovely, relaxed and confident.
    Lurve a gown with pockets!
