Better Played, Christina Hendricks

I will never get over how her boobs and Joan Holloway’s boobs look so different, considering that…you know, Christina Hendricks is attached to both of them. I mean, HOW RESPLENDENT is she here? So gorgeous. I would sincerely take up a collection to pay Janie Bryant to dress Christina Hendricks for everything. I can understand why you might not want to look like Joan all the — wait. Scratch that. I actually do not understand why you wouldn’t want to look like Joan all the time. Look at some of these shots of her in costume: great in a boatneck! Perfect in a pleated neckline! FAB in this scoop-neck. She is just fabulous. This, on the other hand:

Okay, it’s progress. I’ll take it.

Not that this looks like a comfy cage for her puppies, but looking that good in ’60s tops probably involves wearing ’60s undergarments which seems more like putting your puppies in a training collar.

I still think she can do better, but let the poor girl take off her girdle and give her bra some quality elastic.

    • Miss
      0

Exactly. She wears full period undergarments on the show and has dresses made for her. For her to try to find a modern bra that even fits has to be a HUGE challenge. Seriously, bras available in the US are terrible. To then have to wrangle herself into a dress made for a body nothing like her own… Poor girl. I’m sure she struggles greatly trying to dress herself, as a lot of us do who don’t have to be photographed daily.

But I will say her shoes always leave a lot to be desired.

I am a top heavy gal myself, and I respectfully call BS on no bras in her size in the US. When you make minimum wage, probably not. However, she makes a very decent living, she is surrounded by stylists, even if only at work and her job is to be out in the public eye. She could do much better. The fact is she likes showing them off because this is what she is known for. Nothing wrong with that, but let’s not pretend that she couldn’t afford comfy and flattering undergarments.

      • Imani
        0

Besides, she bought those boobs. If it really *is* such a problem to get a bra that fits, which I don’t believe for a second, it’s a self-imposed one.

        • sj
          0

She did NOT buy those boobs. You think she’s got implants? That shit is real.

    • Lila
      0

G, I completely agree with you. Even on being a top heavy gal, wich I am too.

That said, let’s talk about bras. If you think it is hard finding big bras in the US, try Brazil. We don’t even have a band syze/cup syze system (it is one number fits all and that is it!).

So, trust me when I say that she wears push up bras because she likes them. She can definitely afford to have some bras sent over from the Netherlands – just get them online! Or, even best, have them made to measure. I’ve read that Cadolle, in Paris, takes orders.

One wrong move and those things will smother her to death. She looks so AMAZING on the show, I just don’t get how she can look frumpy, yet over exposed in real life.

Look, my girls are bigger than Christina’s, and yes it can tricky keeping them contained and well-wrangled. But, love, if there are people who routinely make you look stunning, it’s ok to ask for help! There is no need to create a chin rest out of your ladies. Everyone know’s they’re there.

Having said that, if there was slightly less cleavage (i.e. they weren’t pushed up quite so far) and a slightly higher heel, she’d be knocking it out of the park!

    • Jasmine
      0

I totally agree– one of my biggest issues with her is that her shoes always seem a touch too… matronly. They don’t seem to match with her outfits, and as a result her lower half sometimes looks stumpy when we ALL know it isn’t.
Lighten up on the cleav on this one though, and I’m sold.

      • Chasmosaur
        0

Disease and injury make wearing anything higher than a really solid 2″ square heel unspeakably painful for me (though less painful than giving away my collection of stilettos…). I wear a lot of Doc Martens and riding boots for fun dress up, and reworked a dressy wardrobe around my chunky 2″ square heels…but yeah, I have a serious collection of matronly shoes. So while you’d think I’m going to defend her, but I’m not. I totally agree.

If she manages to wear good shoes in costume, she can manage it on the Red Carpet. I’m sure this woman has wranglers. She can walk a red carpet in heels and swap them out when she’s settled wherever she’s going outside the range of cameras. I mean, Melissa Leo did it at the 2011 Oscars for pete’s sake, and she was a shoo in for the award and being in front of the cameras again. Christina can do it for AFI Fest.

As for her girls – I give up. Whenever she’s styled by someone who isn’t trying to put her into lingerie, she usually looks smashing. She obviously doesn’t want help, so she deserves whatever fug she gets.

      • Jenny
        0

Lordy, yes- she has the WORST taste in shoes- always so dowdy and matronly. They make her ankles look thick, which they aren’t. She also has some wicked bunions (or the horrible shoes make her look like she does) that could be covered and supported with better shoes.

        • filmcricket
          0

Actually, in other shots you can see that those shoes have got at least a 3-inch heel on them – higher than she usually wears on the show (so that she’s not towering over most of her male co-stars). But she does default to the peep-toe far too often, and yes, she appears to have bunions. I recognize that bespoke dresses aren’t really practical when you have to appear in front of the cameras wearing something different all the time, but if I were her I’d definitely invest in a few pairs of hand-made shoes. She’d be more comfortable, and people are less likely to notice when you’ve repeated a shoe than a dress.

Not to play devil’s advocate, but bras in the 60s had a very different shape than today, more coned and thusly the same went for dresses. Bras today push upward and create a generally rounder bosom shape.

She needs to find a tailor who can remember how to put the widest point of the dress around actual nipple height (without bra on) and install a stealth underwire so she won’t need a bra. >:-)

I don’t watch Mad Men, so thanks for the awesome photos of her (though I’m not wild about the pleated neckline).

She looks much better here than usual — but Lord, does she have any shoes that AREN’T peep-toe? And they needed a little bedazzling as well — not much, just a tad.

    • Anita
      0

I’ll cosign this. I don’t watch Mad Men either, and had no idea she could look so good and so comfortable in her clothes. Everything she chooses when left to her own (or her terribly misguided stylist’s) devices looks painful, dowdy or both. Surely there are some current styles and undergarments that will better serve this woman’s challenging figure.

  6. amys

She’s reminding me of KimK here, and that’s unfortunate. I’m going to ignore her chest and mention, again, that Christina has such lovely skin. I’d like to see a less frumpy shoe. Also, what’s in her hair? Is that a clip? A fascinator?

    • Helen
      0

Zooming in, it looks like a clip in her hair. I think it’s a little weird, but it does match the dress, which I guess was the idea.

      • Kat
        0

The shoes don’t bother me so much, but I wish she’d quit cocking her foot inwards like that. She does it in every photo, and it just makes her one foot look kind of misshapen.

        • anonymoose
          0

Yes! Posing her foot like that accentuates that her feet ARE misshapen with bunions, and makes her look stumpy overall. The only thing looking good here is her hair (minus the doohickiemajiggy) and makeup. She needs to get her dresses hemmed to the mid-knee so the curves on her bottom half balance her upper bulk.

She seems to be giving her best “I am ravishing” gaze here, but she looks so self-conscious like she poses in front of her mirror like this before going out.

I have loved her since I first “met” her on Firefly (where she also looked gorgeous and feisty), and was honestly stunned when I saw her on the red carpet looking squished and overflowing. Why wouldn’t she want to adopt some of Joan’s glamorous clothes, even if she didn’t want to wear the bouffant and the pen necklace? I’m a 38DDD and I know exactly which necklines are my friend. If only I had her eyes, hair, waist, creamy skin . . . I JUST DON’T GET IT.

    • Cass
      0

I’m a 42DDD, and I can dress myself too. I try not to fug the person, only the clothes, but I have to agree with the commenter who said that she has to want to look this way, because you canNOT so consistently hit a fug home run around the issue of trying to cover your breasts in a way that doesn’t make the world want to scream. It’s so rare that I walk out the door and find that I’ve jammed my breasts under my chin in case I fall asleep during a board meeting!

That said, this dress is a vast improvement over her usual; I like that it has no hooha at all. I think a simple silhouette suits her wonderfully, and she has a gorgeous figure, if only she’d do something about the upper torso area there.

      • sarah
        0

Agree with everything Cass has said. I’m a 38F myself…and just cannot understand this..so the only conclusion is that she wants to look this way.

        • Sajorina
          0

I’m only a 34DDD and it is hard for me to wrangle my breasts, but I manage to do it! When I want to show some cleavage I do so without looking cheap! And, I don’t think that Christina looks cheap when she does it either!

    • Ladyblahblah
      0

36DD/DDD here and I have never bought a bra that got mine up under my chin like hers. And, I don’t buy cheap bras. I honestly think she wears corsets to get that look.

  8. Olivia
    0

She needs a better stylist. She is so perfect, and yet everything she picks looks as though her magnificent bosom is either being smothered to death, or making a hasty escape. I do agree with all the comments about 60′s bras, but come now, there must be bras and dresses out there for her fab body type.

  9. Bella
    0

I think we have to finally accept that she wants to look this way. If she didn’t she would have found someone long ago to dress her differently; she certainly has the money and connections. She likes those melons on display (paid for or not.)

As to the shoes, it looks like she has some horrific bunions. Ouch!

    • Helen
      0

Yep. This is just how she likes them to look. But it IS better than usual!

I have bunions, too, and own a variety of shoes that fit comfortably and cover them. There is no need to wear the same style all the time. I think she also just likes peep-toes.

  10. Nancy
    0

There is a Hollywood stylist conspiracy against redheads, no one knows how to make them look consistently good, it’s a real shame.

That said, the problem with the real life Ms. Hendricks is foundation garments and lack of proper tailoring. If Serena Williams can wrangle her girls to play 3 hour Grand Slam matches (and not get a concussion or be rendered unconscious from the motion of her bosoms) then I am certain that Ms. Hendricks’ girls can be properly given their full respect. Please, for the love of womankind, won’t someone help her?

  11. jean
    0

She also needs to learn to close her mouth …what is that half smile? And that fussy thing in her hair! Ug. She has gorgeous red hair …let it stand alone lady. But otherwise I love her dress. Gorgeous and sparkly and a good length for her legs. And she’s wrangled. Yeah, people will still stare at them all night, but they’re wrangled.

  12. Eliza
    0

It’s clearly her choice to showcase her breasts since she does it with almost every outfit she wears. There are ways to showcase your figure without spilling out (see Sofia Vergara and her impeccable tailoring) but Christina consistently chooses to maximize her cleavage, so that must be her preference.

  13. Sandra
    0

If you must hoik them up to clavicle level, at least hoik them equally. Or stand up straight. The right one is noticeably higher than Leftie. I agree that she must want them there, because there’s plenty of us more-endowed ladies don’t go around impersonating the in-house lingerie model at Fredrick’s of Hollywood. If she wants people to stop talking about her figure more than her work, she should dial it down several notches. She could dress in a flattering and fitted style without Exhibits 1A and 1B for the prosecution being served up every time.

    • anny
      0

      ^^This.^^
Especially the “talking about her figure more than her work” part.
(Bonus points for using “hoik” in a sentence.)

Also agree with the comments about her b.o.r.i.n.g. shoes. You could put a bag over her head and dress her in a burlap sack and the shoes would still give her away.

      • Tina
        0

As a natural 34 H, I am sad to say that I have spent way too much time trying to figure out how she gets them there. Right sized band, but smaller cups would just give her four boobs. Right sized cup, but too small band would generate the spillage, but then wouldn’t have the fullness on the bottom. Bustier/ corset could give the lift, but not bring them together like an Olsen pelvis on the red carpet.

Only way I can replicate is to u them together with “diva tape”, put on the right sized padded bra, then wrap the bottom in an ace bandage. So yea, put me down in the “she wants to look this way” column.

        • Libby
          0

Eh. I know that my breasts sit very differently from others in my family and friends circle. Even though I’ve got E/F’s they don’t really *do* cleavage. Therefore, I’m inclined to believe that this is partially how she’s built. Also, a corset that is not tailored correctly would not only give lift, but monoboob/press them together pretty effectively too. (The only time I’ve gotten cleavage was in a 2.5 sizes too small corset cinched to touching.)

        • Andrea
          0

I was contemplating this too! I’m a natural 32G, and while my boobs are definitely prone to bra uplift-and-spillage from undersized bras, I usually end up with either a quad-boob or Cleavage of Insanity and Doom ™. I don’t know how she ends up with the over-boob circular cleavage unless (as has occasionally been reported) these are not, in fact, entirely Mother Nature’s blessings. They defy the laws of physics and squishiness!

I’m SO happy she actually has a waist! Yay for well cut dresses! And obviously she likes her ladies to be up and out, so I’m not going to give her grief for that.
However, even when she kills it with the dress, her shoes are always so dull or just entirely wrong that it brings everything back down to earth with a bump. No more peep toe! No more!

What she needs is a mirror that doesn’t hide her chesticals. She looks so great! BUT LET THE BODICE OUT. Those suckers need to breathe.

I just want to say that I loathe the stupid euphemisms like “puppies,” “girls,” “ladies,” etc. when talking about her breasts. How is that any different or less coy or less downright offensive than men calling them honkers, headlights, funbags? I think we’re grownups here — just call them what they are.

These bolt-on cantaloupes are killing me. She always looks like such a dish on Mad Men so it’s even more frustrating because we KNOW she can look fantastic. Not sure what the deal is with her shoes. I saw her in shoes previously and thought “she needs a higher heel” and then saw them from a side shot and they were high. How do you make shoes LOOK stumpy? and yes, it does look like she has wicked bunions.

  22. Lalochezia

I am really beginning to think that she is deliberately wearing bras that are too small for her. One of my similarly well-endowed friends buys a bras a size or two down from her actual size and often ends up with a similar look. I don’t think Christina would have to resort to 60s style girdles etc. to wrangle her bosom more effectively, but I do agree with the commenters who are saying that at this point, we have to acknowledge that she is probably doing this on purpose. :/

I also have Way Big Ones and know the angst of finding proper undergarments and keeping things… reasonable. It is a trial. But I cannot afford a stylist, tailoring for the bulk of my wardrobe, and high-quality clothing, whereas I’m pretty sure Christina Hendricks can.

As for modern brassieres, many of the larger sizes DO create a cone shape, whether you like it or not. It’s actually pretty tough to find ones that don’t create a lot of spillage AND don’t give you weird triangle boobies.

Maybe she just really goes in for the Renaissance Faire Wench look, as far as decolletage goes.

  24. Sajorina

I think she looks extremely cute here… I like the dress so much I would buy it for myself! The shoes make her look matronly, but I’ll take them over flats any day! I understand that some women can’t handle super high heels and she just may be one of them! It’s a FAB for me!

  25. Anne

This isn’t the best, but it certainly isn’t the worst. I think she must have a penchant for Balconet bras.

” think we have to finally accept that she wants to look this way. If she didn’t she would have found someone long ago to dress her differently.” Yes, I’ve been saying that for years. Many of us seem more well-endowed, but everything isn’t on display. I’ve seen Christina in other shows before Mad Men, She was just wearing what was appropriate for her character and she looked fine. I never thought, wow look at that chest. She clearly wants to make a splash on the carpet. I think it’s tacky for a good actress. Also, there is nothing wrong with saying the word “breasts,” instead of all the slang terms.

I just feel like she needs to loosen the straps a bit so her breasts are a bit lower. Sometimes it looks like they’re trying to make an escape by heading over her shoulders! She’s so frickin gorgeous – I just want her to look good all the time, not just on TV.

apart from the boobs pushed up to her chin I think this is good. the dress is really pretty, so much better than what she usually wears. if her boobs weren’t hiked up (and I assume it’s the push up bra doing this? forgive me if I’m wrong) I would give this an A and a most improved.

I just have to rant for a moment…she’s not a natural redhead, nor is Emma Stone, Lauren Holly, Donna from “That 70′s Show” or Jessica on “True Blood.” I recognize that 90% of the blondes in Hollywood aren’t natural either, but as someone who would take out loans for genetic modification to be a biological ginger should that option ever exist, it’s a pet peeve when someone’s given “credit” for being born that way when they aren’t.

Silly, I know. But the real ones are such rare and beautiful things, it feels like taking something away from them to applaud the pretenders. (Of which I am one…but I freely admit it.)

The black isn’t bad, but I think this would have looked even better in a cobalt blue or navy. The way Ms. Hendricks has chosen to dress her breasts creates a bulky appearance. I think she would look sleeker or more proportionate with a different look, but this one makes me thankful I don’t have breasts large enough to “wrangle” in the first place.

As others have mentioned, the reason she looks “good” (ie, her breasts are kept under wraps), on Mad Men, is due to the figure altering period undergarments and personally tailored dresses.

Dressing huge breasts is a real challenge. Just because she’s rich, doesn’t mean it’s easy for her to find garments to fit. She’s a celeb, so there is pressure on her to wear designer duds, and those gowns are made for people with very different shapes to her. Yes, sometimes those with big breasts can find specialty items, or particular styles targeted to large busts, but I expect it’s rare for her to find anything like that in Hollywood, where her body is far from the norm. Give the girl a break. When they are that big, it’s really hard for her to keep them concealed without looking matronly or overweight. Any dress with a flattering neckline will make her look overly sexy and on display and she can’t help it without wearing uncomfortable and constraining undergarments to hide her natural shape.
