BAFTAs Feh Carpet: The Ladies of Downton

I have questions. First and foremost, why isn’t Michelle Dockery at the BAFTAs? We had hoped the answer was that she was following her Letterman appearance late last week with a bunch of Fashion shows, but alas, we’ve yet to see her in the front row anywhere. Second: Why isn’t Michelle Dockery in the front row anywhere? This girl is for real now. She is, as Victoria Beckham would say, major. She’s going to be all over the place soon enough, so designers should be tripping over themselves to get her in their camp. And third: How come these other ladies aren’t rocking something unusual and fabulous? It’s not that Anna and Cora look BAD, per se, but it’s a bit samey. And Sybil! SYBIL. YOU CANNOT. And whither Edith? Seriously, Downton Fever is a thing now. Several of the early shows we saw were very Lady Mary Crawley. And since nobody’s putting Mr. Bates in any froofy Oscar de la Renta, they’d better get on Mary and these other lasses. They can’t do it alone, and by “it” I will eventually mean “the Emmys,” or in breakout star Dockery’s case, I suspect, the Met Ball. Or possibly, because it would be incredibly entertaining, one of those fake awards shows on MTV. That’s a lot of outfits. Hop to it, clothiers.

100% agree – where is Michelle Dockery?? She’s easily the best actress/character in the show for me, and so stunning as well (and her dresses in the series are just gorgeous). Agreed that all these ladies would have done so much better to choose a colour, though Joanne Froggatt’s makeup & hair at least are very pretty & do her justice.

For the sisters (Edith included) looking appropriately major, see Vogue UK. Anna also recently wore an amazing white lace dress – the kind that looks a little like a table cloth, but amazing. Maybe once I see more of them out and about, I’ll start using their real names . . .

Jessica’s dress looked much better on Lena Headey at the Emmys.

Wit! That is what I actually started my post to comment on – that Jane Eyre look thoroughly critiqued by Fug Nation awhile back. I wish Lady Sybil, too, had worn a deep green or red belt or shoe. I think she looks adorable in the dress, though.

Lady Sybil needs a stylist. Her outfits of late have been atrocious, and her hair/makeup are worse. This dress is not bad, but the styling (or lack thereof) is all wrong.

I absolutely love DA and can’t get enough, altho the last couple of episodes are ripe material for Fug the Fromage. Lady Sybil’s school marm dress would be vastly improved just on the deployment of a great necklace. They all deserve better clothing and styling though, ’tis true.

Seconded! The last few eps have been so fromage-y.

Seriously, I just watched the latest one last night and both my husband and I “AAUUGHGH”‘d at the TV more than once. And a couple times looked at each other and just busted out laughing. It’s still enjoyable though!

I actually like all these dresses. They are very ladylike and I would rather see a bit of ladylike dullness then all the whack ladybits showing stuff (I’m looking at you Fergie. Or that blue nightmare that K. Perry wore) that has been all over my TV lately.

I know – I feel the same! I also suspect that if I had to go on the red carpet, I would choose a dress exactly like Joanna’s in this picture – I think she looks gorgeous in it!

Jessica has a bad case of Lamb Dressed as Mutton!

Here is the Vogue article about them http://www.vogue.com/magazine/article/downton-abbey-playing-the-part/#1

Can’t disagree with anyone who says they all could have used a bit more pizzazz, but even so, I think they all look lovely.
Was anyone else as disappointed as I was in Robert’s dalliance with the maid? Just not in character for him, I don’t care how much Cora was neglecting him.

AH FUDGE!!! I’m watching Sunday’s ep tonight!!!!!!! (although I’m not surprised. I saw the writing on the wall and it was pissing me off.)

Sorry, Meg! It never occurred to me that I was letting a spoiler out. I saw that writing on the wall last week too, and tried to convince myself I hadn’t.

Elizabeth McG is basically a knockout beauty, but I get the giggles over some of her bad acting in the show. In fact the whole show sort of jumped the shark in the 2-hr marathon the other night (it was a mistake to let my boyfriend watch it with me). What I like is that they wear the same things more than once or twice in the shows. Mary’s orange number with the patterned bodice front, I can’t get enough of. These black dresses are tame to the point of boring, and I so hope the show saves itself from the same fate. Give me more dead bodies in a virgin’s bed.

I like that too, that they wear the same frocks a few times. I also like how Lavinia dresses a bit more modern than the sisters and makes them look ever-so-slightly like country cousins . . . I love her green sack dress.

I just started watching DA on Netflix last week (and kicking myself for not doing it sooner) and the last episode I watched was the one with Sybil’s new “frock”. I don’t want to ruin that reveal for anyone who hasn’t seen it, but it made me die a little inside. And on that basis, these 3 are all well played.

i’m pretty sure sybil is wearing this (or something very close) http://gofugyourself.com/emmy-awards-unfug-it-up-carpet-lena-headley-09-2011 that y”all hated, but at least it fit lena headey like a glove and she had good hair and shoes

Some British ladies have this thing of plucking them all out… it’s so sad. Eyebrows sometimes don’t grow back! Don’t over pluck, ladies. It looks kinda tacky.

It looks like Elizabeth McGovern missed with the tint of her foundation. Here face looks way paler than the rest of her body. Other than that, her dress is the best, and while Anna’s is a little bit of a snooze, at least it’s flattering.

Jessica B-F is so so so pretty, like a brunette Scarlett Johanson, with a deep voice and pretty eyes. Why does she fight the hotness with that dress?! Why?

I don’t know. We’ve had many examples of “pizazz” and trying to be noticed, um, Ashanti comes to mind right now. I think they look great appropriate, covered, flattering colors for them. Joanne especially. Maybe a sparkly necklace, but otherwise, nothing bad to say.

It looks like Lady Sybill’s luggage went missing on the voyage and she had to borrow a dress from Miss O’Brien.

Jessica Brown Findlay’s dress might be awesome with better styling? Some big blingy modern jewelry and hair that’s less Victorian school marm, maybe.

Jessica Brown-Findlay rarely seems to bring out the sexpot on the red carpet, even though she’s obviously a total knockout. Whilst obviously I wouldn’t want any woman to do something they weren’t comfortable with, I feel like she must want a *bit* of excitement after being stuck in a drab nurse’s uniform most of the season!

Lady Sybil seems to be dressed as Mrs Danvers. A bit of statement jewellery might have perked this up a bit.

I have to admit, I decided to start watching Downton Abbey because of all the references on this site (and an overwhelming desire to find something so I could avoid my homework) and it is amazing. I love it. Even my dad likes it and he hates the British aristocracy with a passion that I reserve for Crocs.

But these three look like they’re still mourning Patrick’s death.

This is what it’s like for someone who doesn’t watch “Downtown Abbey” to read this post: “Who? Wait, what? So, there’s three of them? And, who’s missing? What? Ok, there are supposed to be four ladies! Where is the other one? What? Huh, there are others or are these the same people? What? Why do I even bother? Huh? Whatever…”

In JBF’s defence, it is February here in London, and until today, pretty cold. I don’t entirely blame her for covering up. I’m a little bored by the black dresses on all three, though Joanne looks the best in that Victoria Beckham (and Melissa George also looked great in her Victoria Beckham gown, which I don’t think I’ve seen on here. It was also black, but not in a boring way.)

Sybil has a very long neck and narrow shoulders – a few episodes ago she was in her nightie or something, it was a wide neckline that dipped below her collarbone, and it wasn’t the best look. This might be why the high neck on this dress. I think it’s pretty cool, but I can’t approve the topknot – I’d have loved to see her hair down. But then so much black. You’re right, not a good choice.

When did Mrs.Danvers move to Downton Abbey?

The thing about Michelle Dockery is she’s actually from Exeter with a middle class (putting it kindly) Exeter accent. so I don’t know if she’s into bursting anyone in the US’s Anglophile/RP!OMG bubble. She’s nothing at all like Mary – almost the opposite, actually.

Sybil does nothing for me, so her “Minnie Driver in The Governess” costume gives me joy. Think Anna and Cora look pretty, if a bit dull.

Where is the Dowager Countess?! Where is that busybody Isobel and That Bitch!O’Brien? I’d much rather see them at events.

Michelle’s actually from Essex, not Exeter (completely opposite side of the country). And she is reasonably well-spoken in real life, but can turn on the full-on Essex accent when she wants to (like when the three actresses who play the sisters were on The Jonathan Ross Show recently and he asked her to do an Essex accent).

JBF’s hair is disgusting in this picture. It looks like she came straight from the gym without showering. Ugh.
